"Hey, Rayanna!" Kai called. "We're going hiking! You coming?"

"No way am I coming on your stupid hike," I huffed, crossing my arms.

"We got sushi!" Kai grinned, waving a plastic carton of sushi.

"Gimme that," I snatched the carton off him. "You're gonna spoil them."

"So are you coming?"

"Yeah, whatever," I huffed. I walked past him, swishing my pink-streaked hair and pointedly not looking at him. Lloyd smirked as I walked past.

"Shut up," I grumbled, shoving him with my hand.

"I didn't say anything!" Lloyd grinned, throwing his hands up in surrender.

"Fiery, isn't she?" Kai smiled.

"This sucks," I puffed, sloshing my way through the thick, knee-high mud. It had started raining halfway through the hike. My hair was plastered against my face. "We haven't even reached the mountain yet!"

"We're nearly there," Kai said, a little way ahead of me. He turned around and saw me struggling through the muck. He stuck his hand out. "Need a hand?"

I looked away but took his hand. It was warm.

"You okay, Rayanna? You're looking pretty red. Are you sunburned?" Kai asked, concerned.

"No, you idiot," I said, making my hair hang over my face so he couldn't see exactly how red my face was.

"Here's the mountain!" Jay declared.

"No way am I hiking up that!" I exclaimed.

"Come on! It'll be fun!" Kai smiled warmly. Just then I realized me and Kai's hands were still intertwined and reluctantly pulled away. Kai's smile disappeared.

My legs burned as we walked up the steep hill. "My legs ache!" I complained. "I need rest!"

"I'll rest with you," Kai said. He flopped down onto the grass and patted the spot next to him. I hesitated and then joined him. Lloyd and the rest of the ninja continued the treacherous hike up the mountain.

"Hey," Kai said, "are you okay? Your face is much redder than before."

"Yeah, I'm fine." I said.

"Rayanna. . . .there's been something I've been meaning to ask you." Kai said, his cheeks pinking.

"What is it?" I asked.

"Well, you don't seem to like me much. . . .but. . . .I. . . .I. . . ."

"Spit it out already,"

"I like you," Kai mumbled. My eyes widened and I looked away quickly.

"Oh," I said. "Kai. . . that's really flattering. . . ."

"Never mind, Rayanna. Let's just go,"

"No, Kai, wait," I said. "I. . . .I like you too. . . ."

Kai's eyes widened.

"Hey, what took you so long?" Jay asked. Then his eyes found me and Kai's hands.

They were intertwined.
