Legacy Room
No One's POV
"Alright, Jin," PIXAL told the Ghost Boy, smiling brightly. "You awakened your Element yesterday, so today is another important milestone for you - today you get your Elemental Weapon!"
The sleepy boy fought back a yawn and smiled toothily back at her, feeling excited himself. He and the other boys were gathered around PIXAL in the Legacy Room - the room that contained the Elemental Weapons. A circular room lit overhead by fluorescent lighting in hidden enclaves, it contained each Elemental Weapon used collectively by the Masters. Each weapon was carefully placed atop a raised pedestal that was framed against the wall by a woven tapestry in regards to the Element they represented. The room was considered a landmark in both the start and the end of a Master's career; when they took up their weapon, it meant they were ready for the challenges ahead, and when they returned it to the pedestal, it meant they were truly done with it all.
It was tradition that once a Master in training awakened their Element, they were to claim their families' Elemental Weapon as their own. Valt had already claimed his weapon, and the pedestal for the Elemental Weapon of Lightning lay empty.
Now it was Jin's turn.
"Oh, this so exciting!" Valt squealed, hopping from foot to foot. He was currently standing next to PIXAL beside the pedestal holding the Elemental Weapon of Wind, his sword bouncing dangerously in his hand - PIXAL had to jump out of his way to avoid its sharp tip. "I can't wait to see what Jin's weapon is!"
"You're not the only one," Jin told him, his smile widening. "I've never really held a weapon of my own before, so I'm curious to see which one will suit me best!"
"You all are excited, but I have to admit that I'm nervous," A voice called from the group, and the trio turned to see Naoki sweating nervously. "Now he'll have something to beat me with if I so much as forget to hug him!"
"Which is another reason I'm excited," Jin implied, giving the scientist a meaningful look. Another bead of sweat dripped down Naoki's face.
PIXAL clapped her titanium hands, pulling their attention back to her. "Before we officially begin, I'd like to start us off with a little history lesson." At the boys' collective groans, she laughed. "Don't worry, it's an interesting lesson. And it's about the weapons." She gestured around them, to the weapons still on their pedestals. "Centuries ago, there were only four weapons that truly mattered: the four Golden Weapons of Creation. Every other weapon used by the Masters was meaningless. A Master of Form thought that this wasn't fair - the other Masters should have weapons specially pertaining to them as well. But he also realized that each generation may have a different weapon preference as well. So he asked each Master of his generation to bring him the weapon they liked the most, even the Golden Weapons of Creation.
"Mind you, this was back when Master Wu was still the teacher, so he had to get his permission before he did what he did," PIXAL said this with a firm look at each of the boys. "He told Master Wu his plan beforehand, and he agreed with the Master of Form's logic. So, with each of the weapons, he laid down a spell: the weapons would change their shape and appearance according to the personality of the Master that is holding it - staying true to the Element they represented, of course."
"And THIS is my weapon!" Valt broke in loudly, proudly holding out his sword so that it caught the light. Behind the glare, PIXAL rolled her eyes.
The boys were quiet for a moment, letting the history of their ancestors sink in. Then Boa spoke up, "So...what I got from that is..." He flashed the others a satisfied smirk. "These guys owe me!"
The other boys grumbled their denials while Lui smacked the back of his head. "Don't even think for a second that I owe you anything," He growled. Boa looked hurt, but his smirk was still an undertone.
"Jin," PIXAL said gently, drawing the Ghost Boy's attention back to her. "If you please..." She gestured gracefully over to the pedestal containing the Weapon of Wind. "Claim your weapon."
With the encouragement of his teammates goading him on, Jin took a deep breath and walked up to the pedestal. On top, the Weapon of Wind had the form of two daggers with the heads of dragons for hilts. A swirl of wind marked the side of both daggers, and the billowy line almost seemed to move under the lights.
"My mother's weapons," Jin whispered, almost sadly.
"Yes, she was quite the beast with them," PIXAL told him, looking over his shoulder at the daggers. "Each opponent that was unfortunate enough to face her shook before her blades." She sighed almost blissfully, then glanced at Jin. "And now you get to continue her legacy."
Jin glanced at her. "You know a lot more about my mother than I ever did," He said inquisitively. "Can you tell me more about her? I mean, not right now, but..."
PIXAL laughed slightly. "I'd love to, Jin," She told him softly.
Jin nodded at her, then turned back to the pedestal. He took another deep breath and held his hands above the hilts, hesitating slightly. Bracing himself, he laid his hands on the metal and picked up the daggers...
Nothing happened. No flash of light, no building of wind, nada. Jin looked over his shoulder at Valt and PIXAL, a little disappointed.
Valt himself confused, then his eyes widened and he smacked his forehead. "Sorry, forgot one important detail," He said apologetically, chuckling nervously. "You have to let the weapon taste your Wind in order to determine which form to take."
Jin gave him a seriously look, then shrugged and turned back to the daggers. Closing his eyes, he willed the air around him to speed up just as he had the day before against the mud monster, guiding it to surround the daggers. He felt every groove in the metal's surface, every niche made by his mother, reading the story she left behind.
He kept his eyes closed until he heard his teammates stir excitedly. When he opened them, he gasped - the daggers had started to glow a bright white, making the wind around them glow as well. It soon got to the point that Jin didn't have to guide the wind to surround the daggers; it was almost as if the daggers were controlling the wind, drawing it to them. Jin felt the need to release the hilts, which he did. To his amazement and those around him, the daggers started to float, still drawing in the wind.
They lifted until they were a good yard and a half in the air, and then the transformation took place. The daggers turned into glowing white blobs, parts dislocating from some parts and adding to others. The blobs elongated and curled in on themselves, then developed hilts and spikes.
When the blobs seemed to have finished transforming, they slowly lowered themselves back down into Jin's waiting hands. The gawking Ghost Boy waited patiently as his weapons guided themselves back into his palms, everyone around him holding their breath. As soon as the hilts touched his palms, the blobs stopped glowing and revealed themselves in full color as the wind finally died down.
Instead of daggers, Jin was holding two whip-like weapons, whose ends dropped noisily to the floor. The hilts were teal metal lined with yellow highlights, and the color palette continued along the black rope of the whips as metallic spikes. There seemed to be no pattern regarding the intervals of the whips, and they were all different sizes; the largest was about six inches while the smallest was no bigger than two thumbnails on top of each other.
"SPIKED WHIPS?!" Valt cried, rushing forward to get a better look at the new weapons. "SO COOOOOOOL!"
"I'd say so!" Yugo exclaimed, pushing through his teammates to inspect them closer. He gingerly fingered the length of one of the whips. "Something like these could really do some damage in a fight! I can't wait to see them in action!"
PIXAL also stepped forward to assess the new weapons; her green eyes scanned their length, processing the data. "I think these are more than just whips, boys," She told the group thoughtfully.
They all looked at her questioningly. "What do you mean, Pix?" Xander asked. "What else could they be?"
"Well, look at the randomness of the spikes," PIXAL told him. "There's barely no two of the same size, and there's no pattern in the sizes or distances. It kind of reminds me of the irataka nenju necklaces Itako women used to summon spirits in Ancient Japan. Those necklaces were made out of beads and animals bones, to which there was no real pattern to. If I had to guess, I'd say that these whips cannot only work as a useful weapon, but can also summon spirits." She smiled at Jin. "It really suits your personality, wouldn't you say?"
Everyone listened to her explanation with interest and took a closer look at the whips. "So they can both maim an opponent and summon spirits in the middle of a battle?" Yugo asked. His brown eyes sparkled and he stared at the whips with new reverence. "Even cooler! Now I just have to see them in action!"
"Great...now my boyfriend has two ways to beat me up," Naoki groaned, suddenly dreading the future.
Jin's eyes lit up and he glanced at Naoki with a sly smile. "Hey, Naokiiiiiiii...." He sang, stepping forward with his new whips swaying in his hands.
Naoki stared back at him apprehensively. "What?" He asked nervously.
"Do you mind going up to the kitchen and making me a blueberry pie?" Jin asked sweetly. Everyone else watched with bated breath, curious as to what the Ghost Boy would do if his boyfriend refused.
Naoki blinked and started to sweat. "Uhhh...right now?" He asked. "Because...we're in the middle of class..."
In response, Jin lifted the hilt of one of his new weapons and brought it down hard. The result was the sound of nearly a dozen metallic spikes scraping across each other and striking the floor in a sharp CLACK. It wasn't aimed at Naoki, but the message was clear.
Everyone gasped and took a step back. Jin looked shocked at the strength of his weapon, but he covered it with a meaningful look at his boyfriend. "Does that answer your question?"
Naoki immediately turned pale and started sweating up a storm. "Y-y-yes, dear!" He stammered. He whipped around and started sprinting towards the exit; he was gone in the blink of an eye.
When he disappeared, Jin threw back his head and laughed. Some of his teammates laughed right along with him while the others nervously chuckled. After what they had seen, they couldn't be sure it was safe to be around the Ghost Boy anymore.
"Jin..." PIXAL said warningly with her arms crossed.
Jin only stared at her. "What? I need some way to practice with these things."
PIXAL only sighed and pinched the bridge of her nose. Things were only going to get more chaotic from here on out...
