Chapter Twenty Three
A/N: Try not to hate me too much, alright?
The other side was cushioned by a snow bank, though Lizz almost hit Zane. Her head was spinning, and she was looking at everything upside down. Zane flipped her right-side-up, brushing snow off her gi, "Is everyone alright?"
Kai was beside himself, "What did we get ourselves into..."
Jay suddenly turned right around and flipped his way up the snowbank they'd just slid off of, "Guys! It's a maze! I'm great at mazes!"
"If being great means getting lost the quickest then yeah, you're the best there is," Lizz grumbled, glancing at the floor as she walked. She didn't notice that Kai had stopped walking, disappearing from beside her.
It was his girly gasp of surprise that made Lizz stop and look behind at him, "Oh! Whoa..." he moved and put both hands on the wall of ice in front of him, "If my reflection means anything... I'm starting to think we won't be breaking out of this maze anytime at all."
Zane did the same, walking to the nearest wall, "My reflection... is that me? I look older... but my attire is... different. I don't believe these reflections reveal our inability to escape, but a mere glimpse of our future selves."
Cole jumped on the bandwagon, moving towards a wall, too, "Misako said to move forward, don't look ahead. Is that what it means?" He looked away from Zane and at the ice sheet in front of him, and stopped dead, "Wait a minute... why can't I see my reflection? Where is my reflection?!"
"It's probably because you're a ghost," Kai reasoned.
Zane took Cole around the shoulders and took him over to where Kai stood, "Ghosts cast reflections, Kai. He was probably just looking in the wrong place."
"I am looking in the same place you are!" Cole snarked.
"Hey hey guys!" Jay called, "Guess what! I get an awesome eye patch!" Lizz tuned him and Cole's arguing out, finally gaining enough courage to look for her own reflection, expecting to see the worst scenario possible.
But what she saw was... her. She looked the same as she did now, maybe with a few added scars here and there across her face. She was watching two others fight, a... a teenage girl about her age and a... ghost. She yelled something and the fighting stopped.
She was training them...
Lizz let out a high pitched scream. Not because the unnamed teenage girl had sharpened teeth, or the blue and purple bruises that spread over Lizz's reflection's right shoulder and side, patterned in the shape of her ribs.
No, it was because the ghost in question -- a teenager with short black hair -- was talking with her as if they were friends. Laughing and smiling. The three walked towards where Lizz stood and stopped, almost as if posing for a picture, though they still moved a little here and there.
The boys ran over at her scream and Lizz began backing away, horrified that her future self would ever even look at a ghost and let it live, let alone treat one -- who wasn't Cole -- as an equal. "Lizz!" Jay was the nearest and so he was the first over, "What happened?! What did you see?!"
"G...G...Ghost..." she stuttered out, more from anger than fear.
"Ghost?!" the others had caught up and Cole furrowed his eyebrows, "You... You get turned--"
"No, God no!" she shook her head and started walking further into the maze, "No, just... Never mind."
No way she was ever going to be able to make nice with a ghost. It took her this long to get used to Cole! And... and who was that other girl? Long, ombre-bleached dark brown hair, basically, bright, mischievous, sky blue eyes... fangs...
Do a ghost and a vampire become Lizz's best friends in the future? What was she training them for?
"Unbelievable," she scoffed, "The boys get cool, believable futures and I get one from a fantasy novel... Unbelievable..."
Cole's yelling made her stop and double back, "It's Morro! He's in the maze!"
Que loud cracking noise, some yelling... Lizz skidded around the corner in time to watch Morro back Jay into a wall, pointing the Sword of Sanctuary at his chest, "That's all you Ninja do is talk! Blah, blah, blah! I'll stop you from talking!" he swung at Jay, who then dodged the attack and began running as fast as the ice floor would allow.
"He's attacking an unarmed ma-an!" Jay squealed as he ran.
Lizz was the only one who could run after them, as Zane and Kai were on the other side of the wall Morro shattered beforehand, "I'm comin', dude!"
Zane suddenly slid by, "Lizz! Come on!"
Zane wasted no time in jumping on Morro's back to deter him from Jay, who'd gotten himself cornered. He ripped off an icicle and began sword fighting Morro, who was a tad distracted by the Nindroid on his back.
Lizz was at a loss on what to do.
"Lizz and Zane are here," Jay called out, "But where are the other two?!"
He had a point. Lizz left Kai and Cole with Zane. If Zane was here, where did he put the other two? As an answer, Cole's voice rang out, "I...I don't really know where I am, but I'm coming!"
Almost on cue he fell through the wall on the right and knocked into Zane and Morro, all three going sliding across the floor. Cole sat halfway up, "Ugh... why didn't I do that sooner."
Morro then went after Cole with the Sword, and Cole took up a severed icicle and did just as Jay had moments before. Cole was actually winning until Morro knocked the icicle from Cole's hand.
Both Lizz and Jay tried tomohawking an icicle at Morro, but to no avail since he still had the Sword. Jay took up another icicle and with a yell somewhat like an indian war cry, he charged at Morro.
She stood there and watched as both Jay, and Zane now, were fighting Morro, choosing to just... sit this one out, really. They had the ass-kicking under enough control that her trying to join in would do absolutely nothing for anyone.
And by 'ass-kicking under control' she meant that them getting their arses handed to them by Morro. Not the other way around.
Seriously, Morro by himself was probably a skilled fighter, and doubled up with Lloyd -- who they trained... Lloyd was a butt-kicking machine by himself, even without ghostly strength.
Only when Zane got punted in the gut and sent flying some odd feet did Lizz step in, sliding between Morro and Zane with her Aeroblade raised. His sword came down and clashed against her weapon, sending a ringing sensation up her arm.
That deterred her long enough for Morro to sweep her aside, and then Jay and Cole both came running in with icicles once again. Lizz rejoined them and Zane after her arm quit vibrating, but after a moment of fighting, Morro got fed up and sent them all flying with a heavy gust of wind.
They all almost knocked into Kai, who had finally found his way back to them, icicle weapon in hand. He blocked Morro's attack and proceeded to stand there and taunt him, "Well come on! Come get me!"
Morro leapt forward, swinging the Sword, just as Kai leapt backwards. Morro's weapon sliced through a field of icicles that, apparently when broken, sprouted two more in their place. They sprang up everywhere, and each time, Morro sliced them down, trying to free himself from his prison.
His angry yells were drowned out by the rest of the team congratulating Kai, "Nice one," Lizz high fived him.
They could still see a sliver of Morro through the shards of ice, "You can't trap me," he declared, "I'll find you Ninja, just wait, you'll see!"
"Quick," Jay turned his back on Morro, "how do we get outta here?"
They each started looking around; up, down, left, right. Lizz tripped on a crack in the floor and went sprawling, "Ow."
"To move forward, don't look ahead," Cole face-palmed, "Ugh!"
Lizz, however, was more preoccupied with where her hand was; when she'd tripped, her hand fell through a crack in the floor when she tried to break her fall, "To move forward, don't look... ahead... look... below?"
The boys followed her gaze, "There's... there's light!" Kai yelled, "Everyone, dig!"
This is a weird ass cave... Lizz shook her head as she chipped away at the floor with her Aeroblade.
Soon enough the floor caved and they all fell a good forty feet, Lizz and Jay both groaning in pain, "Ow..."
Her pain was short lived, though, because her ears picked up on the peaceful noise of running water. Kai was the first to his feet, "Hey!"
One by one the others got up and ran after him, "What?!" Jay yelled, slipping on some rocks,"What? What is it?!"
Kai stopped to catch his breath next to a grey skeleton. It was laid out, wearing a hat like Sensei's and cupping the prettiest diamond Lizz has ever seen.
Granted, it's the only diamond she's ever seen, but still.
"I'm going to take a wild guess and say that this is the First Spinjitzu Master..." she whispered, careful not to disturb the peace of the cavern.
"I think your wild guess might be right..." Zane whispered solemnly, "And that means this is the--"
"Realm Crystal," Jay finished.
Zane reached forward and tugged free the Crystal from the grasp of the skeleton. Kai asked something, but Lizz didn't noticed as something... shifted inside her. More than the gentle lull of the stream, the cascade of the waterfall over the rocks. She felt more... complete.
"How it works is you hand over the Crystal," Morro snapped from somewhere behind them, "Or you say goodbye to your little friend."
Lizz turned around to see several of her worst nightmares. The first one was Lloyd, bleach-blond, tan-skinned Lloyd being held at sword point at the edge of a cliff by who Lizz assumed to be Morro-- the real Morro. Teenage, ghostly, black haired Morro.
The second nightmare was this version of Morro was the one from Lizz's ice reflection, the ghost she was supposedly going to befriend? It sent a flurry of mixed emotions up in her chest and she felt like upchucking.
But she didn't. She instead took a deep breath, grit her teeth and let out a growl as she tried to go after Morro. But no one let her; they knew her intentions and two of the boys grabbed her elbows, the third crossing an arm over her chest.
She struggled, but as she watched how weak Lloyd was her struggles got weaker and her knees were close to buckling. Lloyd blinked sleepily, "I'm sorry..." he gasped out, "I couldn't.. Stop him..."
"So what'll it be," Morro taunted.
"If we hand him the crystal," Zane whispered, "He'll start the reign of his master, cursing NinjaGo and every Realm."
"But if we don't give it to him he's going to do something to Lloyd again," Lizz stressed, seething with a mixture of anger and worry, "And look at him! He's too freaking weak to defend himself!"
Jay groaned, hardly heard over the heavy crashing of the waves of the river, "Ugh. Either option totally stinks," he turned to look at the rest of his team, away from Morro and Lloyd, "What do you think, Kai? What do we do?"
Kai suddenly acquired a determined, look on his face, his jaw set, and he gently took the crystal from Zane. Morro grinned from his perch on the cliff across the way, "Well, well, well... looks like the decision of up to you, Kai. So choose."
Kai began looking around for an answer like it was going to be scratched into a wall. His eyes flickered between each of his team members, landing on Lizz before going to the river. In the short amount of time they've been in the cave, the river went from a gente lull to acting as if there was a heavy storm coming, the surface rocky, waves arching white and foamy.
His eyebrows furrowed and he looked back to the Crystal in his hands as Morro started yelling at them again, "Stop stalling! Give me the Realm Crystal, or else!"
"We're not stalling," Kai snapped, "We're thinking!" he motioned for them to congregate closer and put their heads together, his voice dropping to a whisper, "He's right, I'm totally stalling. What are we gonna do?"
Cole wrinkled his nose in disgust, "Acgh. This guy really chaps my hide," he took a deep breath, clenching his fists, "I swear, when this is all over--"
The ground started vibrating and Kai nodded, throwing a glance back at the raging river, "I knew it..." he whispered, "Our powers... now that Morro is out of Lloyd's body, our powers are returning," for extra emphasis, he lit his hand up.
Jay made a noise that one should... really only hear through a closed bathroom door as he struggled to make a web of power between his fingers, "Yeah," he sighed, dropping his hand, "But like Lloyd, they're weak. We're in no position to fight back."
"Leave that to me," Kai told him, "Lizz..." he gave her a once-over, "Feelin' good?"
"Hell no," she squared her shoulders.
"Good."
"What?!" her eyes went wide, wondering if the sea salt was frying Kai's brain.
"Time's up!" Morro yelled.
"Wait!" Kai yelled, the Crystal suddenly glowing red hot on his hands, "We'll give you the Realm Crystal."
He turned and threw the searing Crystal at Morro, who, in turn, dropped Lloyd off the cliff and into the rampaging tides of the river below. The only bright side was after Morro burned his hand on the Crystal, he dropped that in the water, too.
Lizz paid no attention, instead trying to grab one of Lloyd's hands, but... she couldn't see him. She now figured out it was her that was making the river like that, angry and foaming like the ocean in a storm. The currents were pulling Lloyd under and he was going to drown and--
And it was her fault. And she couldn't get that fact out of her head and it was doing nothing to help her calm the waters down enough to find Lloyd and grab him. She was following Lloyd down the stream, but accidentally got caught up in the middle of the three-way fight between Zane, Jay and Morro.
Morro swung at Jay with the Sword, but Zane iced the blade before Morro could get a hit in, making the blade too heavy to use right now. Lizz took her chance and leapt at Morro, getting in as many hits as she could before he kicked her off him.
"You can't even fight, let alone control your power!" he laughed, breaking the ice off his Sword.
While he did that, Lizz and Jay jumped at him again but to no avail, he got the Sword loose and tossed them aside with the blade, getting into a tussle with Zane directly after. "Lizz!" Jay yelled, "Use your powers!"
"I don't wanna hit Cole!" she yelled back, watching Jay try to hit Morro with some lightning. Morro leapt aside and the lightning instead hit Zane.
Jay turned around, "Kai's got Lloyd!" he announced, "But... Who's got Kai!?"
Lizz was about to jump into the water to go retrieve two of her boys, but her collar got snagged on something, and she suddenly felt a heavy cold wash over her. She paid no attention to the intrusive feeling in her head and walked after the others, who were all congregated at the very end of the river.
However, she spotted the Realm Crystal bobbing above the surface of the suddenly still river and paused, leaning over to pluck it from the water. The others had finally retrieved both Kai and Lloyd from the water, and Lloyd was laid out across Jay's lap, coughing up water, "Where's Lizz?"
"Of course those are his first coherent words," Jay rolled his eyes, but still had a hint of a smile tugging at his lips.
Kai frowned, "Where... is Lizz? You'd think she'd be right here after all the fuss she was in before."
"She's over there," Cole pointed up river to where Lizz stood stock still, "And she's got the Crystal!" Cole cheered, "Yeah!"
"Wait, but..." Zane looked around, "Where has Morro gone?" his eyes landed on Lizz, and Zane froze, "Oh no--"
No one had a chance to ask what Zane meant by oh no. No one was prepared for anything else to happen; they had Lloyd back, they had their powers back. Almost everything seemed fine.
They'd all looked at Lizz, curious as to what Zane meant by oh no. They were happy about her having possession of the Crystal, overjoyed, really. Possibly even ecstatic! But their happiness was soon replaced with a dreaded sense of déjà vu when Lizz paled and her hair turned jet black, her malicious laugh echoing off the walls.
A/N: Oops. My fingers slipped.
