Chapter Twenty Nine
A/N: The fact that it took me SO LONG to write the rest of this book, and the fact that I am almost done with it right now both make me sad
Because I was procrastinating it for so got damn long that I'm just disappointed in myself
ANYWAY @dxganronpa has been helping me with these last few chapters and making sure I don't give up. She's always my number one supporter and I love her
"Protect the Preeminent!" Morro screamed it out after he'd realized the Ninja were trying to knock the docks out from under the Preeminent.
So now the beast was covered in wooden buildings and slats, and was going after the ferry into deeper waters, ninja climbing around on it like bothersome ants.
"I should be out there fighting with my team!" Lizz snarled, kicking down the door of the mental cage Morro had locked her in, she was glowing with a dark blue hue, and the still waters of the empty city were chaotic.
Giant waves were foaming, arching and crashing against each other both inside her head and in real life; it was tossing the ferry to and fro as well. Morro stood up, leaning his full weight on one of the dock railings, struggling for breath, "What's happening?! I've got to get out of here-- why--"
"You're not going anywhere!" the pale outer exterior of Lizz's appearance began flickering. From ashen grey, to her normal tan. From bright ghostly green to a blinding, angry dark blue, "I'm in control now and I'm sick of you!"
Her hair was whipping about her face in the wind that had picked up, from a gentle breeze to a howling wind. Something wasn't right, and she literally didn't care, "I'm sick of not being in control of my life, and now you've made it so I'm not even in control of myself! I was dealing with being dislodged from my family. I was fine with living with the Serpentine. I dealt with the evil digital warlord hunting my friends. And now you? A whiny teenager? Angry that he didn't get what he wanted?" she caught a glimpse of her reflection in a nearby store window and did a double take -- blue eyes so bright they were almost white. Blue skin and clothes, wavering as if they were made out of water themselves?
She didn't even recognize herself.
But she stomped on, headed into the wind and headed right for the edge of town that the Preeminent was on, "You're throwing a temper tantrum and ruining thousands of lives solely because you didn't get to be a really important ninja? Like a child getting his favourite toy taken away? How pathetic can you get?! Especially when you think of the fact that all ninja are equally important!"
In her head, he was backed in a corner, back pressed against a wall as he cowered. He still didn't have any weapon against her, but she had everything against him.
"Power," Lizz stopped at the end of the docks and took a deep breath, "Real power, comes not from hate, but from truth, you whiny little bastard, and right now I've got you trapped--"
She wheeled around with her back to the wind, arguing with the air like she was arguing with an actual person, her blue hue fading into bright green, voice turning back to Morro's, "How do you know I don't have you trapped?"
"Because I'm stronger than you!!" Lizz's voice was deeper, overtoned, both voices mixed. She was livid, breathing laboured. It felt like a rubber band in her head was stretched too tight and at risk of snapping.
It was getting harder for the ninja to hold onto the Preeminent with the wind picking up at this speed, "We have to get back over there!" Lloyd called, still watching, through the rain and hail, the little blue dot that was Lizz and Morro.
"No, we need to stop the Preeminent!" Kai shouted back. He was all for going back and checking on Lizz, but the ferry was almost a tentacle's reach away.
If it didn't tip over from the crashing waves, first, that is.
They'd all been trying to watch what was left of the town that they'd barely noticed loose boards whipping past them, "Oh God..." Jay muttered, "She's going to level the town!" his powers were akin to that of a thunderstorm, slight control over the wind, and right now, Jay's body was buzzing with the activity in the air.
Something was wrong and it was only going to get worse.
Wind picking up, water getting angrier. It was just dawning on the boys what was happening, "We need to warn everyone on that boat!" Kai shouted. Without waiting for permission, he jumped into his Airjitzu and -- just barely -- made it back to the deck of the boat, shielding himself from the wind and rain.
"Sensei!" he shouted above the wind, looking to the old man who was squinting into the wind, trying to see Stiix, "Prepare for a hurricane!"
Kai frowned a little when he saw how calm Sensei seemed to be.
After the warning left Kai's mouth, everything just flew way more out of control. High speed winds picked up even more, howling past his ears and sending buildings flying apart, the roof of the ferry rattling. The already unsettled water became catastrophic, six foot waves crashing against the distant shore, knocking out the remaining dock stilts until the docks holding up what was left of the town gave out.
The small boat they were on stood no chance against the water, especially since they were almost over Hallows Trench, but at least the Preeminent seemed to be getting weaker, but if no one lasted through this tsunami what was the point of a victory.
Luckily Cole was inside the cabin, but that's only good if the boat stays upright.
Everyone who could fit rushed inside the small cabin, and those who couldn't stayed in the middle of the deck and held onto anything they could grab to stay upright. Water splashed over the sides, flooding the floor. It was amazing that the boat was still moving forward at all...
The team stood balanced -- barely -- on the hand railing at the back of the boat, weapons drawn, as they prepared to fight off more of the Preeminent's tentacles should the situation arise.
Barely, through the whipping wind and rain, they could just barely make out the creepy green-glowing silhouette of the Preeminent, but with a horrid sounding inhuman screech the shadow slowly started disappearing.
"We must be over Hallow's Trench!" Kai cheered, knocking back another tentacle before hopping back to the deck.
"Now let's try not to drown!" Jay did an unnecessary backflip to get himself situated beside Kai.
Zane and Lloyd followed, and soon they were standing, still poised for a fight, like a team, "We need to get to Lizz," Lloyd announced, "How do we get back to shore?"
"We can't in this storm!" Zane shouted, motioning towards the choppy water.
Just when the sides of the boat started dipping below sea level, the water began calming itself, the wind dissipating back to a whisper. The boys all looked up from their position on the back of the boat, a dire aire about the group.
Sensei, still gripping his hat, spoke up with a solemn voice, "Stiix..."
"It's..." Misako gasped, "It's gone..."
They were looking at nothing but calm, open seas. No Preeminent, no Stiix. No proof that there had been any life there at all other than the floating debris of houses lulling in the still water. There was no breeze, nothing creating any movement in the waters at all.
It sent the boys into a frenzy, and their frenzy left Cole confused when he finally emerged from the cabin, "What's all the hubbub about?"
"It's too still out there," Jay wsa almost hanging off the edge of the railing.
"Isn't that good?" Cole did a quick head count and his heart fell, "Wait--"
"Zane, can you see her anywhere?" Nya asked, poking her head out of hiding as she sheathed the sword she'd found.
Zane nodded, already on it. He stepped onto the railing and hopped off, his dragon materializing under him before he flew higher. Kai sighed, "Why...didn't we think of that. Let's go!"
One by one they followed Zane into the air, branching out to try to find any sign of Lizz -- or, even Morro. From above the water, the damage looked even worse. Nothing stood from Stiix, not even any dock posts that would've been driven deep in the mud. The trees along the shoreline were curved, some even uprooted and thrown from the high winds that had just occurred.
"Over here!" Lloyd was further down the shoreline than anyone, hovering over a cluster of wooden planks, "She's over here!" he lowered his dragon to just above the water, making sure to hover so his wings didn't disturb the water any more. Lloyd let out a worried whine, "Oh, Lizzie..."
She wasn't moving much, but Lloyd could just barely make out chest movement underneath her -- his, actually, tattered and ripped Gi. She was, for the most part, back to her usual colour, her hair matted to her forehead and falling off the edge of the board she was floating on. Lloyd could just barely make out a mix of greens and blues, yet. Gently, he reached down and pulled her up, ready to take her home.
Or, tried to. His hands went right through her, and he screamed.
