Chapter Thirteen

A/N: And so I've returned from the dead

I apologize deeply for leaving for, like, ever, I swear it's all Hamilton's fault

On the darker side of things I've accidentally started writing a Hamilton thing; who wants to read book that's based solely on adultery?! :D

Stab me if you'd like, I wouldn't blame anyone

Imma make this a 2-part updated thing since I wanna update but this is starting to become too many damn pages for any man to understand!

Hamilton reference :p

Cole inhaled slowly through his nose as he watched her leave, "Right... Don't do that again..." After a moment's hesitation more, he followed her back to regroup outside the Temple.

All eyes were on him when he resurfaced from the woods, "So that was a bit longer of a chat than we expected," Jay mumbled, glancing between Lizz and Cole.

Cole crossed his arms, "And?" he huffed at Jay.

"Where were you?" Kai asked.

"Talking," Cole's tone was clipped.

"About?" Kai urged, flexing his fingers.

"Things that don't concern you," Lizz stepped in, ready to slap both boys, "Let's go inside and meet our doom now, 'kay? The sooner I die, the better..." she jumped towards the front portion of the wrap-around porch.

"Don't you mean the sooner we learn Airjitzu, the better?" Jay corrected, somersaulting after her.

"Sure," she was glancing around, seeing if there was an easy way to get inside.

While Cole and Jay were tugging at the boards covering up a window, Lizz motioned silently towards the door and Zane and Kai gently pulled it open, letting Lizz walk in before they followed.

From inside, Lizz could hear Jay's voice, "Oh... okay."

As soon as the other two were inside, the door swung shut and both got locked with an echoing click that scared Lizz so much she leaped into Jay's arms, "Hold me!" It took a moment for her to realize what happened, and after Jay awkwardly cleared his throat, she slid back to her feet, "I... my knee is... acting up again.... That's why I did that. It's fine though, now, no worries."

"This way, c'mon," Cole began leading the group through the labyrinth of winding, dark hallways, "Let's check in here."

Jay and Kai began fiddling with the doorknobs, turning and twisting them until finally the double doors swung open. Walking into the library-type room, everyone flipped down their hoods, looking around. Lizz was beaming, "Books!"

"Not now," Cole's voice squeaked terribly when the doors slammed shut behind them. Since he was looking back, he didn't see the spider hanging from the ceiling in front of him, and he bumped into it with a squeal.

Kai batted the spider, "Relax."

Lizz now had it running over her hands as she twisted them back and forth, "Yeah, Brookstone. If this place is really haunted, the spiders are the l-least of your worries," he voice faltered, a shudder running up her spine.

Kai followed her gaze to the creepy-looking portrait of Sensei Yang that was hanging over the roaring fireplace, "We just need to wait until he shows himself, we'll be fine. Now put the spider back, Lizzie."

"'s not my name," she let the spider go and it scrambled back up the wall, "Does anyone else find it a bit strange that there's a lit, roaring fire in an abandoned building?" the fire wasn't helping, either. It was casting dark, dancing shadows across every surface.

Cole was whimpering, "He should've been here by now! You heard the tour guide! If we're not out by sunup, we'll be ghosts!"

"You didn't actually buy into that malarkey, did you?" Kai scoffed, glancing at Lizz while he pointed back at Cole, "Can you believe him?"

"Hey!" Cole scowled, backing away from Kai, "I don't wanna be a ghost! Who wants to be a ghost?! And why didn't anyone warn us this place gets so creepy after dark?!"

"It's a haunted Temple for a reason, numbnuts," Lizz mumbled, running a hand over the spines of books. She jerked her hand back when they were nice and new; not a speck of dust on them.

"Um, remind me again why we agreed to put the guy afraid of ghosts in charge?" Jay asked, lazily waving a hand around.

Zane, an open book in his hands, wandered up to Jay, getting really close to him, "LISTEN TO THIS!"

Jay recoiled and took the book from him, "Allow me," he cleared his throat and began reading, "Whoa... it says here, 'Though many believed Sensei Yang's unusually strict teachings drove his pupils away, others admit to never seeing any of them leave the Temple grounds, suggesting a more sinister plot.'," while he was reading, Jay'd begun wandering about the room, and finally he looked up from the book, grinning maliciously. He giggled slightly, "How awesome is that?!"

Cole was hyperventilating, now, "Not awesome! Not even a little!"

Lizz shrugged a bit, "It's kind of awesome," Jay nodded at her and she winked at him, trying to hide her smirk.

"No!" Cole spun to face her, "Not awesome! Not even a little!"

"Don't believe everything you read," Kai added on, shaking his head at Jay.

Jay, in return, stuck his nose in the book again, "'Yang was hard on his pupils for a reason, for in his words, 'as iron sharpens iron, Sensei sharpens student.'.'" Jay looked back up as he trailed off, disbelief leaking into his tone.

Kai hummed, "I wonder what he means by that."

The Grandfather clock started to chime, making Lizz jump back again, her heart pounding in her chest. She began clinging onto Zane when the entire clock began rocking back and forth, making angry wailing noises as the pendulum door flapped open and closed and a wild pace, "T-The clock is m-moaning..." she whispered

Cole--who was closest to the clock--backed up, "It's him! He's in the clock!"

Jay, clutching the book to his chest, "Y-You're the leader," he prodded Cole in the ribs, "Check it out," none too gently, he shoved Cole forward.

Cole whipped open the door quickly and screamed when a bird flew out. It gently floated over and landed on Zane's outstretched arm. Zane clicked one of Falcon's chest buttons to replay the angry moaning noise. Everyone but Cole began chuckling, and Cole snorted, "A prank? Really?"

Kai was full out laughing now, "We were just trying to help you relax."

"Yeah," Jay was laughing too, now, "You should'a heard yourself scream!"

"Zane," Lizz offered. Zane, in return, pressed another button on Falcon, Cole's scream echoing through the room once more; a new wave of giggles brushed over the four of them. Behind Zane's back, she gave him a high five--to spare Cole from seeing--as Zane put Falcon away.

Suddenly there was a loud thump from overhead, making Cole sigh, "Another prank?" he shook his head and went to the door, swinging it open, "Real funny. Didn't anyone ever tell you to quit while you're ahead?" and with that he closed the door, disappearing into the hallway.

"Uh..." Kai looked at Jay, "Was that you?"

Jay shook his head, "N-No. Not me. Lizz?"

She shook her head, inching closer to Zane, "No..."

"NOT ME EITHER!" Zane shouted.

The four of them all took a deep breath before bolting towards the door, "COLE! WAIT!"

Lizz was the first one out into the hallway, looking frantically back and forth for Cole, "Cole?! Cole!"

She'd begun leading the way back down the hallway, "Cole! Don't open the door!"

"Let's go back to the study, Cole!" Jay added on.

"I swear, Cole, don't do it!" Kai pleaded from somewhere behind her.

"IT WASN'T US!" Zane yelled.

Cole stopped at the shaking double doors at the end of the hallway and turned to face them as they raced towards him, "Okay, I have to admit. This is pretty good. How'd you guys get the handle to move all by itself? Is Nya behind there?" he turned around, back to the door.

Jay yelled at him when Cole began reaching for the knob, "Don't open that door!"

Cole, despite their pleading, grabbed the knob and opened the door, letting both swing open wide. It was an empty training room. Kai snorted, "Huh. That was anticlimactic," he led the group farther into the room, inching towards the green candles that shone gentle light over yet another painting of Sensei Yang, "Sensei Yang's dojo," Kai whispered, "This is where he must have trained his pupils!"

"Or," Jay's voice was high and squeaky, "Got rid of them!"

Cole rolled his eyes, "Knock it off, guys. If that wasn't you behind the rattling door, who was it?"

"The ghost of Sensei Yang!" the remaining four chorused.

"As iron sharpens iron," a deep, echoing voice resounded through the room, rattling Lizz to her bones, "Sensei sharpens student."

"IT'S THE GHOST OF SENSEI YANG!" the five of them shouted, covering their ears.

Jay looked up from the floor, "G-Guys... what does he mean by sh-sharpen?" Jay took a hesitant glance over his shoulder at the two swords hanging on the wall; as soon as he looked, the swords began leaping about on their hooks.

"Let's not hang around to find out!" Cole shouted.

Five of the swords jumped from the wall, suspending themselves in mid air, pointing directly at each one of the Ninja, "Let's get out of here!"

Lizz was the first to turn on her heel and run, leading the boys from the room. The swords sounded as if they got jabbed into the doors when they swung them shut, but none of them decided to stop and check.

The creepy laughter followed them down the hallway, getting louder with every step. Pictures were moving about on the wall, creating an off-kilter beat to accompany the flock of angry bats flying around, "Does this mean he doesn't want to teach us Airjitzu?" Jay asked.

Lizz stuck out her leg to trip him, but he leaped over, rolling over once before popping back to his feet. He didn't even miss a beat and was right back in step with them, "Forget Airjitzu!" Kai snapped, "Where's the window?"

"This way!" Cole was the first to reach the window at the end of the hallway, and all five began attempting to break the glass.

Jay grunted, "Gah! We're cased in like animals!"

The only response he got was the dark laughter seeping through the walls, "Ackh,"Cole took a deep breath, "Let's try the front door!"

"But that's downstairs," Kai told him, "And in case you haven't paid any attention, there's flying weapons tryna' slice 'n dice us!"

"THERE'S A DUMBWAITER!" Zane shouted, pointing in Jay's general direction.

Despite the current circumstances, Lizz snickered at Jay's reaction, "Hey! Watch who you're callin'-" then he followed Zane's hand, "Oh! Dumbwaiter! That can take us down!"

So that's how The five of them had gotten to be crammed into a tiny metal square, "This is not exactly how I planned this night to be going," Lizz mumbled, helping Jay and Kai move the rope to lower them down.

"You'd-think-there'd be-enough room-for all five of us," Jay groaned between tugs, "In here!"

"WELL MY CALCULATIONS AREN'T ALWAYS CORRECT!" Zane shouted.

"Ow!" Cole groaned, "My ear," he glanced at Zane, "Can you turn on a light or somethin'? Cuz' I can't see a thing."

There was a click and Zane's eyes were glowing. Lizz smiled, "Thanks."

Her smile was quickly replaced with a look of pure terror--and intense, high pitched screaming--when the ghost of Sensei Yang appeared in the middle of their group, sitting in a calm meditation pose, "Iron sharpens iron."

The boys began screaming with Lizz, Kai and Jay releasing the rope. The dumbwaiter plummeted to ground level and the second it stopped moving Jay and Kai yanked open the door and led the way out, screaming down the hallway.

The swords were back, and inching closer with every step. The only reason they didn't hit anyone was because the Ninja took a sharp right turn; the swords embedded themselves in the wall.

The doors weren't opening quick enough and Lizz stiffened when Sensei Yang could be heard down the hall, "As iron sharpens iron, Sensei sharpens student."

Lizz didn't look back over her shoulder--and didn't want to when Jay screamed again--so she threw herself at the doors, successfully getting them open.

Bad choice, as the entirety of outside had been replaced with a swirling green vortex. Lizz screamed--never one for liking heights--and reached out blindly for something. That 'something' happened to be Jay's foot. He was yelling down to her, "Don't look down! Keep looking at me, alright, Lizz? Keep your focus up here on me," he nodded when she nodded, adjusting her grip on his feet, "Kai," he called up, "What is it? Can you see what's down there? Wait, don't tell me! I don't wanna know!"

"WE APPEAR TO BE TRAPPED IN SOME TYPE OF INTERDIMENSIONAL, ETHEREAL REALM!" Zane shouted down.

Lizz squealed and Jay sighed heavily, "I told you not to tell me, Zane!
