Watchful Eye
"So?" Keira asked looking to Lowery as he called them in. Claire was standing beside him.
"I rebooted the system, I can get back in now, but those cameras were turned off and I can't find out by who. It's been completely erased clean from the system."
"Well, who has access to this room when you're not here?" she asked.
"All the interns, but they aren't capable of something like this. We're talking about computer genius stuff Keira." Claire told her.
"Someone did it , and not everyone has access to the control room."
"I know, look I'm just as confused as you guys are but the best we can do is heighten security around here." Lowery told her.
"What's going on?" The four turned to see Michelle walk in with a slight yawn.
"We got hacked last night." Lowery told her.
"What?!" she screeched.
"Yeah, someone shut down all our cameras, we had some strange activity by the raptor paddock and inside the plains."
Michelle looked fearful. "You think it's InGen, again?"
Keira shook her head dismissing the thought. "InGen is gone and there is no way they can come back. The Costa Rican and the United States government would be all over their asses in a heartbeat. It's someone on this island."
"Who do you think it is?" Owen asked as they walked into the raptor enclosure.
"I think it's Jack, the damn janitor." she said hotly.
"What?!" Owen said.
"You heard me." she said.
"You were the one who said he was really nice in the beginning."
"Yeah, in the beginning, but you didn't see him that day in the plains."
"Oh not this again."
"Yes this again, he has a prejudice against those dinosaurs for some reason. He said they were dangerous."
"Alright, so let's say it's him, how is he giving all the dinosaurs enlarged hearts?"
"I don't know."
"And if he is somehow doing this with his old janitor wizard powers, do you honestly think that old man can run that fast? To outrun Dino and myself. Not that I'm an Olympic runner here but I can hustle when I want to."
"I don't have all the answers Owen, but I know it's him. It has to be."
He sighed. He didn't want to fight her on this. "Alright, look let's just relax okay? There's no sense in getting worked up right now. Why don't we discuss the wedding?"
"I thought you said you didn't want to get worked up right now." she said, before giving him a small smile.
"Well, your dad told me that you wanted the wedding here and he actually agreed, is that what we're doing?"
"I dunno, it depends if your parents will come."
"Trust me, my mom would swim here if it meant she could see me get married. She's been talking about marriage to me since I was 7. Owen," he mimicked his mother's soft voice," you ought to put those dinosaur toys down and focus on the better things in life. You can't play with dinosaur toys all your life, someday you'll have a wife and kids..."
"She said that to you when were 7?"
"No, when I was 19."
Keira giggled.
"But look at me now Ma, I have real dinosaurs and I'm going to marry the most beautiful woman in the world."
Blue let out a snort beside him in her restraints.
"I was thinking about asking Blue to be my best man."
She bared her teeth.
Keira rested her hand on Blue's side. "I called dibs, she's my maid of honour."
"What! That's not fair."
"You have Barry, I'm left with Claire!"
"What about Michelle?"
"Meh, she said she didn't want to be in the wedding, she'd rather watch. So I was out of luck there."
"And Eve?" Owen said.
"I couldn't find a dress in her size." Keira said before the two of them laughed and hugged each other.
"I'm sorry for being a total bitch the other day." she told him.
"It's not your fault, I understand what you were saying now. Like your dad said, if it were one of the girls I'd be turning this place inside out trying to find an answer."
"I'm just so tired of things going wrong when we try so hard to make things right."
He kissed the top of her head. "I know. I know how much you care for these dinosaurs. I don't know why our mothers push for kids, we've got hundreds of them right here."
"That's what I said."
"But you know these children were created in a lab, it'll be much more fun making our own. Or at least practicing."
"Owen!" she slapped his chest.
Zach was glad to see Keira and Owen back on good terms again as Owen came into the cafeteria with Keira on his back before letting her off on her feet. He kissed her forehead before leaving and heading out talking into his radio. She walked over and ruffled his hair.
"What's up, Zach Attack, having fun here with Doug?"
He nodded."We went to the loading docks to bring in the food for the Mosasaurus."
"Yeah, that mother can eat." Keira said.
Lowery and Michelle sat down with them with their lunch. Zach looked down at his cellphone and frowned.
"What?" Keira said.
"Nothing." he placed the cellphone back in his hoodie.
"Come on, tell us." Keira prompted him.
"It's prom back home." he said."I was supposed to take Casey, but now she's going with Tyler Rags. Dude, is a total asshole."
"Well, let's not let your aunt hear you throwing that around, she's gonna think you picked it up from Owen and I."
"Sorry." he said.
"Hey, if it makes you feel any better, I didn't go to a prom." Keira told him.
"What? You didn't?"
"Nope, I was homeschooled since middle school." she told him. "My prom night consisted of my parents and I going out to Red Lobster in "dress up" clothes."
Lowery snorted. "Yikes, even I went to my own prom. Alone, but granted, I went."
"Pfft, I left my prom and went to a party of my own!" Doug said. Keira shook her head.
"Why does that not surprise me, Doug?"
"What about you?" Zach asked Michelle.
"Well, I had to go to my prom. All the sports teams had to go and I was in track and field so there I was. Turned out to be okay, but the movies make it look way better than it is."
Zach received another text of Casey in her dress.
"Hey, I know what will cheer you up, wanna go to the hatchery with me?"
"Yes!"
Keira was heading to the hatchery with Zach by her side when she saw Jack standing looking inside.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
"Looking at them baby dinosaurs, you got there. They're hatchin' aren't they?"
"Yes, they are in the process." she watched him with a careful eye.
"I'll be damned." he said as an egg close to the glass began to hatch. "That's a beautiful thing right there." he said.
She looked over at him confused. If this was his game, he was pretty good at it.
"Yeah, well, while hatching it's best that everyone keep back, they're in the imprinting stage and unless you're working in the field..."
"Oh right, I'm sorry." he said grabbing his mop. "You have a good day, Miss. Grant."
