[23] Falling apart
"You look so out of it!" He laughed loudly pointing at my face in the photo.
I giggled snatching it out of his hands. "Shut up Billie I was like five!"
"I'm only joking c'mon! It's cute! Let me see it again,"
"No!"
"Why!"
"I hate my grandma," I randomly told him, resting my head back in his lap. As I looked up to him as he spoke.
He picked up parts of my hair running his hands through it. "Why?"
"She's like my mom. I thought there was only one Satan,"
"Don't worry about it, she lives far away it's not like you have to deal with her,"
A lump raised in the centre of my throat. Guilt burning in my stomach as I held my breath.
"Echo?" He asked me, pausing his hands as he noticed my sudden discomfort.
"Yeah?"
"Did you hear what I said?"
"Uhuh,"
"I can't believe you left your phone there," He changed topics, carrying on as he played with my hair.
I closed my eyes chuckling slightly. "I can't believe you broke yours,"
"I didn't mean to!"
"I was wondering where an earth you went, I kept blowing up your phone trying to get to you,"
"How are you gonna get your phone back?"
"I'll be back there soon," I finally admitted.
"What do you mean?"
I lifted my head off his lap as I moved my hair behind my ears. "I gotta go there again..."
"You have? You mean for your phone?"
"Erm... well not exactly actually..."
"Well why then?"
"My mom... she actually wants me to move there,"
The colour drained from his face as he went pale. "Are you joking?"
"I actually don't really have a choice,"
"You have to go?"
"Uhuh..."
"And what about... well y'know us? Mike? Tre? Even your girl friends? Y'know whatever there names are- Layla, Mae and.... Kennedy! And Kennedy? Oh gosh what about Kennedy?"
"Billie, chill I'm not going,"
"What and you're just gonna stay in your room? That's not gonna fucking work,"
"I'll find a way. There's no chance I'm living with an old lady,"
"And if you don't find away what the fuck are we gonna do? I don't even have a phone how am I suppose to stay in contact with you?"
"Billie I'm gonna have it sorted I promise you, just chill out Kay?"
He rolled his eyes before smiling. "Right... okay, I trust you,"
"Good, I promise you I got this under control,"
~
"Yes and then you missed it! This cute boy was talking to Kennedy in the shops and-" I cut Mae off.
"-Guys I really just need to speak to you,"
"Is it news?" Kennedy asked sitting down on her sofa.
I nodded.
"Good or bad?" Layla asked.
"Bad,"
"So is that the only reason why you've wanted to meet up with us all right now?" She asked me.
"Hey that doesn't matter- at least she's talking to us," Kennedy scowled over at Layla.
I could sense our group was close to falling apart. I saw it more seeing how easily Mike, Tre and Billie got along. To now seeing how much the girls bicker between them now.
Kennedy's angry at Layla. Layla's angry at me. Mae's trying to stay out of it. But I'm suppose to be leaving the lot of them.
"I was just saying," Layla muttered looking away from all of us.
"So what's the news?"
"Yesterday I went to my grandmas house," I started, the three of them already displaying confused and puzzled faces. "My dad drove us there. She lives ages and ages away but not the point. Once I got there my grandma was being all sweet to me, then I found out I'm suppose to move in with her-"
"-When?"
"I have to start packing my things soon..."
"But why?"
"I don't know. But my mom and grandma started talking about how Billie didn't have a future and whatever and I realised she's the exact same as my mom-"
"-And you're going to live with her?" Mae asked me surprised. "What are you gonna do about Billie?"
"That's the thing, I don't know. I don't know at all what I'm gonna do. I told Billie I have things under control but I have no plan. I don't wanna go and live with that women but I know my moms set on making me leave her home,"
"There's gotta be something you can do Echo," Mae pouted looking over at me.
I shook my head and shrugged my shoulders meaning I didn't think there might have been anything.
We all went silent just sat thinking about what I said.
I didn't wanna leave. But what can you do?
"Is this my fault?" Layla slowly asked.
I went to tell her no, even if it was for what I had left with them Layla had still been there for me. But I was cut off the moment I opened my mouth to say something.
"What do you think!" Kennedy snapped.
I quickly looked at Layla who was absolutely taken back by the sudden shouting. "Kennedy I was asking Ech-"
"-If you didn't open your fucking mouth about Billie joe this would never of happened!"
"Kennedy!" I shouted getting her attention. She quickly looked over at me, breathing in and out catching her breath. "Kennedy it's okay,"
"No it's not! You're going because of her!"
"It's not my fault!"
"Mae you have to agree with me!" Kennedy said desperately turning to look at Mae who was staying silent.
Mae looked around awkwardly as Layla waited for her to say something.
"I don't know..." Mae finally squeaked out nervously.
"You even agreed behind close doors that what Layla did was wrong!"
Layla stood up absolutely offended with her hand on her chest. "What!"
I guess I was right... the group was closer to falling apart then I expected though.
"I didn't mean it!" Mae quickly defended nervously.
"Yes you did!"
I know I should have stopped the argument. But I couldn't hear them shouting anymore. I must've gone into a state of my own imagination because all their shouting was muffled.
I froze, feeling unable to move. To stand up or talk. I couldn't do it. So I just sat, like I was on pause.
The whole thing had thrown me into a frenzy.
"So you guys have been talking about me behind my back!?" Layla shouted to Mae and Kennedy.
"Layla it wasn't in a mean way!" Mae defended trying to hold the group from falling apart.
"I meant it in a mean way!" Kennedy shouted over her. "You've ruined everything for us! You always do!"
Mae and Layla gasped in sync. I had no clue where that part had come from.
"How do I!?"
"You always have a problem with everything! You was sceptical about Billie when you first heard he was paying Echo attention!"
"It was because I cared!"
"What so you cared enough to tell her mom! And get her in this mess!"
"No that was an accident!"
"Maybe it was an accident....?" Mae hoped turning nervously to look at Kennedy.
Kennedy shook her head at Mae in disbelief. "I can't deal with this," She muttered looking away from both her and Layla. "Both of you just get out,"
"Are you kicking us out?" Layla asked looking a little offended.
"Yes! I am! So leave!"
Mae took it on the chin as she already began to make her way to the door, Layla turned her nose up at Kennedy as she followed. The both of them making their way out the front door leaving Kennedy and me.
Kennedy breathed in and out catching her breath from shouting so much. I never realised she could get so angry. I never realised how quickly a group could just... break. But I guess it could.
We had been together for years. Building our bond for years. Just for it to fall apart in the space of- what? Ten minutes.
Finally I was able to talk. Looking at Kennedy. "Thank you," Were my first words.
She looked confused. "What for?"
"Sticking up for me,"
"I wasn't sticking up for you I was saying what was right. It's her fault I'm losing you." She sadly reminded herself as she sat down beside me. "I'll miss you,"
"I'll miss you the most of this group," I giggled.
"I don't think there's even any group left anymore," She laughed backed, although it was true.
"Maybe not... but I'll miss you the most from the broken parts of what remains of it,"
