twenty four: caught in a webbed lie
Harry remembers the stinging tinge of betrayal very well. It's always vivid in his head, every person he trusted, every smile turned to scowl. He knows betrayal more than he knows his parents. His time as a child, five and naively trusting. Opening his arms to Petunia only to be turned away. His first year at Hogwarts, where friend painted themself foe because he lost House points releasing a dragon. His second year, his third, his fourth...
Perhaps, given his history, it was foolish to assume that his fifth would break the pattern.
But there's something odd here. Something that he can't quite place. Harry Potter has been betrayed enough to recognize that this one feels rather different. Luna Lovegood's betrayal feels out of place.
For one, any secret given willingly is not a secret ever meant to be kept. Luna caved with a single accusation, with little to no hesitation -- it shows lack of conviction.
It is also more than odd that Luna would have given Harry any valid information about her in the past. Why give leverage to someone you wish to curse with nightmares?
This betrayal feels out of place. Something is not quite right.
Luna Lovegood raises her wand and casts a silencing spell over their little group of three. She wants the floor, so she'll have it. Draco looks angry because he is and reaches for his own wand, but Harry holds out his arm. He wants to see where this is going. Hermione seems to as well.
She holds up her free hand and sticks up three fingers. "I," she starts, "see the future as it can be and could be. The future as I previously saw it differs now because of three main factors. One," she lowers a finger, "in this reality, I am not from your world. The things I hear and see, my lifestyle as you know it, are not, either. Two," she lowers a second finger, "Dolores Umbridge is from a world not her own as well. In this world, and now in yours, she sees herself a god. And three," she lowers the final finger, "A spell exists that causes the recipient to have nightly nightmares, unless they touch hands with whomever the spellcaster chooses.
"These three facts have caused a butterfly effect. I am able to see the future as it could've been and how it can be. But with these three changes, I am unable to see anything definitive. Your future stems from your present, which, if you're living right, is constantly changing. I suppose we have been caniputled into 'living right.'
"I cursed you. I am sorry that I did. But this is my gamble; this is my Greater Good. I arrived in your reality late last year. I cursed you, then made your counterpart Malfoy, and sat back. I waited for you to figure out how the curse worked -- because of course you would figure it out. I know you well.
"Once you bonded with Malfoy -- and I knew you would bond with him, too. I know you well. Once you bonded with Malfoy, he would see the way that god-complex Umbridge was treating you. He would take action. His family is, and was, powerful enough to get Umbridge sent to Azkaban. She will believe herself to be above prison -- as she hosts Lady Magic herself, of course -- and try to escape. She will fail. Her soul will get sucked.
"That was my plan as I saw it then. That was my Greater Good and, as cruel as it was, Harry, I do hope you will forgive me. My vengeance on a malicious and evil woman is not worth your life, but I would hope it would be worth your pain.
"My plan, as far as my part in it goes, only goes so far. It's time for you to step up.
"Now, would you like to hear how you'll die?"
