Memories
This world used to being mostly filled with chaos. You know, international warfare, country debt threat expectance, mafia vs mafia, etcetera etcetera. But now it's completely in the pits of hell right under the hot coals of a barbeque where up above those coals are the fresh meat about to be served to those who made deals with the demons and the demons themselves. All the while the rest of us fight for survival, all because someone broke open the time rift
I'm one of those trying to survive right now. I'm running from a pack of hellhounds with a small pack of deer meat and hide on my back. There was about four or five of them each with teeth the size of bear claws and with the sharpness of a mountain lion's ready to tear me to shreds.
I aimed my miniature double barrel back and pulled the trigger, there was a yelp and a thud then continuous barking. I'll have to come back for that hide later.
I put the gun in it's holester and reached for my pistol in one of my bags side pockets. Pulled out the polished bit of metal and shoved in a clip, then twisted my torso around and shot at the demon spawned mongrels. The salt filled bullets ripped through their fur and lodged themselves into sensitive spots, stopping the mutts in their tracks and making them keel over as the salt effectively spread from the metal casings.
I slowed my pace as I heard the final thump of the last hound drop. Turning around I watched, waiting for their breathing patterns to stop completely before tromping over to the nearest one and pulled out my skinning knife.
I collected the four hides quickly and made my way to the cabin by the lake. Looking around before entering the desolated structure. I opened the kitchen food cupboard and walked in shutting it behind me then lifted the trap door, climbing down into what I call home.
"I'm home." I called quietly into the fire and candle lit room.
My niece, Marmibelle stood up from the worn down sofa and smiled.
"Welcome back." she greeted, her mixed milky blue and brown eyes glimmering spookily in the dim lighting. She walked over and took two of the hides from my arms. I followed her to her emergency towards the lake and set the other two hides next to her then took my place a small distance away watching for demons or hell monsters.
I looked back at Marmibelle, her resemblance to Mabel was so close if it weren't for her tan skin, gold-like scales, and her webbed fingers and toes all she inherited from her father, Mermando. But she had the long brown hair and love for sweaters.
I smirked to myself at the memory of my sister, always happy even in dire situations. Even at her last moments.
A tear made it's way down my cheek as the image of Mabel's last big smile forced itself to the front of my mind. The first and last smile that was directed to her daughter after her birth.
Mermando took care of Marmibelle for the first five years until the conditions under water got out of control, by then the shack was destroyed and I didn't know if my great uncles were alive or not and had moved in under this abandoned cabin, he helped provide for her leaving gem-like stones on the shoreline to trade for materials in town or bring in some fish and crabs for food maybe a the occasional demon tooth or claw to use on weapons.
"Do you think dad will come today?" Marmibelle's voice broke my train of thought.
I wiped away the tear and straightened up. "I don't know Marmi." I answered hoarsely. "Things are probably busy underwater."
The girl nodded as she tied the hides to some posts in the ground to dry. "I know it's just been a while I'm getting worried." She looked over to me with a heartbreaking look. "Do you think the monsters got him?"
I couldn't even force a smile to reassure her. "I don't know." I got up from where I sat and walked towards her.
She stood as well and huddled herself into my arms that I wrapped securely around her. The both of us remained in silent comfort of each other. The only ones to keep each other sane while the hell continues to rage outside.
I kissed her forehead softly before looking down at her milky eyes. "I'm sure your father will come by later." I spoke, breaking the silence. "Let's get inside now."
She nodded with a weak, trusting smile. I walked with my arm protectively around her, one last concerned glance to the murky waters, and we were back safe inside. I lowered the latch on the metal door before walking to the main room. A glance at the clock told me supper should be getting started so I went to the can cupboard and chose canned ravioli. I place them on the counter and lit the fire stove.
"Uncle," Marmi's call came from the living room. "We need more water soon and I'm almost out of thread."
"Alright" I answered. "I'll go to town tomorrow."
My niece's head popped in through the doorway. "Can I come?" she asked with childish curiosity.
I gave a sigh. I didn't want to bring her along because that would mean I have to also watch out for her then there may be the possibility the men of the town might want her for their own services. Times have gone back to slave and ownership just it isn't racial reasons at all. People see a ragged dressed person by your side then they think that it's a slave and will try something while the supposed owner's back is turned, that is if they favor the supposed slave.
"I know you don't like having to be careful for me too uncle but please." Marmi begged with her hands folded. "I've never been to the town before and I've never met any other people up here."
I shut the door to keep the cooking fire under the stove and looked up at my niece. She stared back with pleading eyes. I stood back on my back and met her gaze with a stern on. "Get your travel clothes ready and make sure to grab that gutting knife I gave you. We leave in the morning."
Marmibelle hugged me tight then ran off to the only bedroom. Don't get any dirty thoughts she only slept beside me until she reached thirteen then I moved to the couch.
I pulled out a pan and set it on the stove top. I could hear the rustling of Marmibelle looking for her stuff.
Turning on the portable radio the news tells of the great news from our self appointed ruler, Bill Cipher the damn dorito ruined everything.
I can't even sleep peacefully without worrying if he's on the other side waiting to torment me.
I opened the cans and poured the contents into the pan. Watching, waiting for the sauce to start bubbling around the noodle wrapped meat.
"And coming to you live from Cipher Central will be Daniel Smith." the reporter woman's voice glitched from the radio cassett.
"Thank you Jannet." Daniel spoke. "I'm Daniel Smith and I stand out front of Cipher Central, the new capital of the entire world waiting outside for Mr Cipher himself in hopes to get an interview."
News reporters one of the few occupations left that don't get tampered with by demon deals. But Bill always wants all eyes on him.
"I think I see... No correct that I do see Mr Cipher." the man continued. "Mr Cipher is it possible to get a few words?"
There was that obnoxiously familiar cackle. "Of course, I can always spare a few moments of my eternity to speak with my people." Bill answered.
"Mr Cipher what do you intend to do about the rebels against you?" Daniel asked.
"Blunt aren't you?" Bill asked unamused. "But anyway what will I do about those pathetic idiots? Eliminate them of course." I could imagine the grin on his face. "By public execution in front of my personal court then broadcast it to the entire galaxy. There won't be a woman, man, child, or other life form that wouldn't see or hear about it."
I shuddered at the darkened tone Bill's voice took on. I may not be a rebel but I wouldn't hesitate the offer of killing him myself.
"Any ideas that would possibly be of benefit to our world, sir?" Daniel asked trying to sound unfazed.
"Well," the self proclaimed leader began thoughtfully. "Now that I did one favor of the world by unifying it, I suppose it would be good to help my citizens wouldn't it?"
"It would be a big help Mr Cipher. Especially to the possible survivors in Gravity Falls or in Oregon in general."
"Speaking of Gravity Falls would you mind if I said a few words to a certain 'friend' there?" he asked.
"N-not at all sir." Daniel answered.
"Perfect. Pinetree,"
I froze suddenly getting the feeling I was being watched.
"Pinetree if you're alive and listening I just want you to meet me in the mindscape one of these nights. I have been lonely without my favorite meatsack." There was a low chuckle. "I only have a proposition for you and it will be to your advantage."
I turned of the radio quickly. Slowing my breathing and steadying my heartbeat. "Not on your life Bill."I growled. "Not ever."
