I woke up later than I should have. It was nearly ten o'clock and the sky was already dark, the blue-black canopy stretching across the sky. I looked at my mirrorphone that rested on my nightstand next to me. I cursed under my breath — thirteen missed calls from Crystal! I was so late.
I rushed to get ready, combing through my hair and tying it into two strawberry blond french braids. Running through the doors at an alarming speed, I gathered all the essentials I needed for the night: pixie dust, enchanted jars and two massive bottles, one filled with our favorite blue Fabubbleous soda and one filled with the Purple Potion. Our job tired us out sometimes, so it was important that we got enough provisions. Then, I changed into my magenta dress with white sleeves — the customary one I used for fighting nightmares. I put on my black ankle-length boots and rushed out my bedroom door, putting on my heart-shaped necklace (a gift from Mom) while nearly tripping on my way out.
I met Crystal in the basement of the castle. She handed me a sandwich.
"Chicken?" I asked excitedly. Chicken sandwiches are my absolute favorite — I swear nothing can or will top it.
Crystal chuckled lightly, "Obviously, though I really shouldn't be giving you this since you're half an hour late."
I made an 'oops, I'm sorry' face.
"Never mind that, we should make our game plan for tonight," Crystal nodded, trying to be professional.
"Oh, I know!' My eyes lit up. "How about we start by using your wand to search for the houses that the nightmares are attacking. Then, when we pick up a trail, we'll follow it into the person's house — through the window, of course. Then we'll fight the nightmares off with our magic. Once it starts to become weak, you can use your gun to trap it into the enchanted jar — and then we'll get rid of it later and boom, our job is done." I used my hands to mimic an explosion.
"That sounds great, and it sounds like the same plan you've given me for the past few weeks, Alanna," Crystal grinned at me.
I lifted my hands up in surrender. "You caught me!"
I scarfed my sandwich down in a rush — we were already late. It was way past bedtime for most kids, and most of them would be in deep sleep. The nightmares would appear soon, and we needed to be ready for combat.
We headed out and I stared in awe at the moonlight, cascading over the dullness that comes with the dark. Crystal had to nudge me a couple of times before I snapped out of my gaze.
"Sorry. It's just too beautiful," I smiled.
Crystal shook her head disapprovingly. "We can talk to Manny later."
We walked on, waiting for her wand to pick up a sign.
When Crystal and I were proclaimed the Moon Spirits, you would have thought that the announcement would bring harmony and peace to the world. Instead, quite the opposite happened — and it turned out that Pitch was at it again (when wasn't he? Give us a break). We were trained to be the Nightmare Assassins of Arendelle, but part of me wasn't sure if we could do it well. I shrugged the thought away; I didn't have time to worry. Arendelle needed me. Crystal needed me. Mom and Dad needed me, and I was proud to help relinquish fear and do a good deed.
"Ready, Alanna?" Crystal gestured to her wand, which had picked up a sign for a nightmare attack.
"Ready as I'll ever be," I smiled at her.
I leapt into the air and let Gale carry me over to the attack. I looked to see Crystal right next to me, floating in the air with her wand and her gun, the moonlight accentuating her white hair streaked with lavender highlights. Her cerulean blue eyes matched her turquoise cape studded with jewels, which were practically glowing with magic. We flew quickly with Gale until we reached the house the wand had identified. Gale flew us up to the second story window, and inside was a young girl who was curled up in a tight ball on one side of her bed.
"You do the magic, Alanna," Crystal told me breathlessly.
I swirled my hands around in complex motions, and soon everything around us blurred like we were speeding past the room. Seconds later, we found ourselves in a lagoon with gorgeous turquoise waters. The little girl was running around, clutching a tattered teddy bear. I had a good idea why she was running — there was probably some sort of monster chasing her. Turns out, I was right: a giant spider had emerged, with neon yellow eyes and was as big as a rhinoceros.
"Let's do this, Crystal!" I shouted. We ran towards the beast who was on the other side of the lagoon. "You attack and I'll absorb its energy," I added while we made our way over.
"Got it," Crystal said while I pulled out one of Uncle Aster's Easter Egg jars. Crystal started twirling her wand around, creating powerful blasts of ice at the beast. I could see her frowning face, biting her lips in concentration. Bright white lights — presumably icicles — surrounded the spider's monstrous coat until it was completely covered. It put up a good fight, though, using its spindly legs to try to shield itself. I threw the jar in the air and spun around, firing my pixie dust at the creature. The sparkles surrounded its coat like ropes, and in mere seconds, they pulled the monster into the jar, shrinking it as the sparkles pulled it in.
"Goodbye, nightmare, you won't win so easily," Crystal shouted at the jar.
The little girl looked at us and smiled. "Thank you, Princess Alanna and Princess Crystal," she laughed and clapped. Crystal curtsied regally while I gave her a smile and waved goodbye.
"Now let's get out of here so we can destroy this monster," I said. I swirled my hands, the lagoon blurred, and soon we were pushed out of the girl's headspace. Uncle Sandy would take care of the rest — dreams were his specialty.
Back home, Crystal and I held hands and combined our energy — it was the only way to annihilate the nightmares. I concentrated all the energy I had into my left hand which was holding Crystal's right hand.
"Three ... two ... one ... now!" I shouted, and we let our magic penetrate the jar to kill the terror inside. When a nightmare is killed, it turns into a part of the Moon spirit. It then floats up and gets sucked into the cascading moonlight, and the rest is left up to Manny. It's always a beautiful sight.
I sighed and watched the 'once-a-nightmare' drift upwards happily. We had minimized the fear in Arendelle.
Crystal and I had no time to spare, and so we set off again into the night.
