3. Nightlings
As usual, the fires around the base had been halved with many of the camp members filing into one tent, covered in mud and fertilizer.
Nathan walked into the center of the base and was handed a spear when a voice came up beside him,
"Hey, Nate is Stephanie still-"
Roy stopped dead in his tracks when catching Stephanie's eyes, kissing his teeth, and looking away. Nathan rolled his own and nudged Stephanie to the mud tent,
"You need to get inside."
"What? No, I'm perfectly fine out"
Nathan turned his head at her and slammed the spear down against a rock, not relenting.
"That's not a request Steph, you know what'll happen if you don't. It won't take long."
Steph stood for a moment before sighing and jogging to the tent, joining the other women and girls.
Roy breathed out deeply seemingly trying to shake off the nervous and awkward energy he was holding in,
"Didn't need to be so harsh Nate...you know-"
"I know. I wouldn't if it wasn't the only thing keeping her, all of us, this place safe."
Roy nodded as Nathan spoke and he knew he understood him, then they heard more screams in the distance. Unholy, shrieking-like murder screams that made your blood run cold.
"You think she got inside in time?"
Nathan grabbed the spray from before and started dowsing the air with it, throwing the bottle in the bag when finished.
"All we can do is hope, if they smelt her at all...they'll be here shortly."
The two went to the walls holding their spears and watched the darkening view, the only thing keeping the whole group on their toes was the fury they held in their heart.
Fury for the Nightlings, the ones who had killed their mothers, sisters, aunts, cousins, friends...the memories of them kept their attention strong and their motivation alight.
But thankfully it seemed the Nightlings were unaware since none appeared before the gates and eventually Nathan retired to bed and slept till dawn, only opening his eyes when hearing Stephanie and Roy outside his tent starting to work through their incident.
Nathan groaned and crawled out of bed, sliding his shirt on when hearing the rest of the camp starting to liven up.
"Hey, Nate what cores do you have today?"
He looked over at Steph and then sighed, rubbing his hand through his hair.
"Guard watch for most of the day, drop you back to the Lookout then come back and go to the Station tent."
She nodded then got called away by Roy and with that Nathan made his way to the top of the walls, sitting and drawing on a pad of paper while occasionally looking into the distance.
But like usual it was mostly silent, only the rustling of trees catching his attention when suddenly his eyes caught something white in the distance.
Nathan sat up and reached for his binoculars, his mind racing when seeing what it was...
A girl with pure white hair, standing alone staring at the walls.
