Of course it's on top of a mountain, Sophie thought sourly as she trudged along with the group.

Tiergan had precisely located her father's phone, and gathered dwarves, goblins, and gnomes to take the calculated risk to rescue Amy and her parents. The dwarves followed along underground, and the gnomes hid along the sides. They didn't believe in violence, but they would help with medicine and were armed if they needed to defend themselves, although most likely they would refuse to use the weapons.

Sophie barely let out a shriek as she fell backwards for the seventh time that trip. Not that she was counting. Fitz caught her for the seventh time, chuckling. Maybe I should just carry you.

Sophie rolled her eyes. I'll be fine, she responded. She stumbled again, which did nothing to prove her point. Fitz looked at her teasingly and grinned. She pretended to be annoyed, and the two continued on with the rest of the group, Fitz keeping his arm around her waist in case she fell again.

The group made it to the top, and Sophie only fell twice more. The Collective left the rest of the group in a cave while they met, instructing the seven teenagers to wait until they needed them. Goblins stationed themselves around the entrance to the cave, their swords glinting in the fading light.

Fitz and Biana caught their mother before she went with the rest of the Collective. They talked briefly in hushed tones before joining the rest of the group sitting in a circle in the back of the cave, which was surprisingly warm. Sophie couldn't help but notice a heat in Keefe's eyes as Fitz sat down next to her and wrapped his arm around her shoulders. She also noticed that when Biana sat between Keefe and Tam, she sat considerable closer to Keefe. Tam noticed. Keefe didn't.
