Chapter 5
Keefe has been sitting under a tree at Everglen for the past two hours. He hasn't been talking to anyone; not even Fitz. Fitz told me it was best to leave him alone, and so did Crash.
It was safe to say that I completely disregarded their input and stalked over to where the blonde boy was sulking.
"Hey," I said softly, sitting down on the fallen log next to him. Keefe didn't say anything, but continued to stare out at the trees in the enclosure.
"It really stinks, what you're going through," I continued when he didn't say anything. "If there's something I could do to help--"
"Just, don't leave me alone," he whispered, not looking at me.
"You'll never be alone, Keefe," I said, taking his hand into mine. My heart started to beat faster, and Keefe glanced over at me. In a few seconds he tilted his head closer to mine, and my eart was like a rocket. First Fitz almost kissed me, now Keefe?
I tilted my head closer and then Keefe snapped.
"You hear that?" He whispered quietly.
I completely froze, the blood leaving my body.
"What?" I barely breathed out. Keefe stood up, walking quietly in front of me.
He was craning his neck to see who it was, when he heard a pair of footsteps. Instantly, he dove back to where I was.
"Inside the log, now!" He whisper hissed, as he gently pushed me forward.
Inside the log, we tried to slow our breathing. The sun was already setting casting a dark light glow.
Keefe grabbed my hand in the dark, and I pressed myself against him. His watchful blue eyes found mine as he placed a finger to his lips.
"Did you hear that?" A males voice called out.
"Don't be an idiot! Are you afraid of the girl? What can she do? Inflict you? Come on, the boy's what we're looking for," a scaly voice chocked out.
I squeezed Keefe's hand tighter, and I mouthed 'inflict'.
He shook his head no, 'wait'. So we sat there, in the dark log, while our enemies talked openly above us.
"So if we find him, then what?"
"We do nothing. We're only here to observe. You should be happy I was able to get you out of that meeting. Lord knows what kind of a lecture we'd get from Fintan!"
"It definitely be heated."
Both of the figures chuckled at their joke.
"I almost pity the boy."
"Him? How?"
"If it weren't for his infatuation to that girl, he'd be one of us. We wouldn't have had to harm his mother or father."
"What? I thought those were accidents!" The one whispered harshly.
"Planned accidents. The whole point was to push him, and break him apart from his friends. Whether Fintan will admit it or not, he needed him. Which confuses me. What sort of use does he have for some boy whose ability is only reading emotions? Not much, if you ask me."
"Strange."
"Indeed."
"We should hurry up before boss thinks we are wasting time."
"Which we are."
"Not really."
The voices started to fade away, and Keefe and I didn't dare speak a word.
A good fifteen minutes later, Keefe carefully exited the log, much to my quiet protests. I soon followed him out into the dark.
"Keefe," I whispered.
He didn't say anything.
"Keefe," I said again.
"Yes?" He whispered annoyed.
"Do you want--"
"No I don't want to talk about it. There's nothing to talk about. Two Neverseen agents pity me, and the most annoying part about it is we didn't get any useful information out of it! All we got was worthless embarrassing things about myself, that nobody needed to know!" He huffed angrily.
"We did learn something useful! They're after you, which means you need to be protected or something. We also know that Fintan needs you for something, and without you he won't be able to accomplish it!" I argued.
"He won't be able to until he finds my replacement," Keefe snorted.
"You can't be replaced Keefe," I said pointedly.
He snorted.
"Keefe, you mean a lot to everyone. Don't act like you don't," I said annoyed.
"What do I mean to you?" He asked suddenly turning around, catching me off guard.
"What?" I asked nervously, my face turning red.
"What do I mean to you?" He asked softer.
"Um, well, you're a--"
"You know what? Forget it," he said harshly walking away from me.
"Keefe you do mean a lot to me. You're one of my top three favorite guys, you know that," I called after him.
"Never mind Foster. You don't really understand what I meant," he mumbled.
"Well what do you mean?" I asked hotly.
"If you don't know, I can't tell you," he said sadly.
