Chapter 3
I walked towards Keefe and I hugged him as he cried silently.
"I must seem so pathetic right now," he laughed dryly, trying to joke it off.
"No, you don't seem pathetic at all! Keefe," I started.
"We better take care of that ogre and light leap," Keefe interrupted, walking back through the twists and turns to the ladder.
"Let me go first," he whispered as he started to climb up the rungs.
"Be careful!" I whisper yelled.
He looked back at me with his trade-mark smirk, and I felt my heart flutter.
He opened the hatch up an inch so his eyes could peak out, he held out his hand indicating for me to stay put. He slipped out, and I was alone in the dark for five minutes and I started freaking out. Hurrying up the rungs, I screamed as Keefe's face appeared out of the blue.
"Sh! Foster, I know I'm hot, but you seriously can't fangirl freakout about me right now. You'll have to wait till after we've lightleaped," Keefe sighed with a small smile.
My face felt on fire as it blushed the darkest shade possible of red.
Keefe grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the cave.
"I could've gotten out of there myself, you know," I whispered as we crouched.
"I know," He smiled, as he dragged a rock over the top of the hatch.
Then he pulled out a glass bead.
"What's that?" I asked in awe.
Keefe smiled, "It's a smossion."
"What's that?" I asked, still confused.
Keefe leaned in till he was a pinkie finger away from my ear, "You can't tell anyone I have these. They're highly illegal. Basically you throw one on the ground and you whisper where you want to go, then a tidal wave whirlpool will come out and take you there."
I looked at him slightly concerned.
"My mom," He paused with a shaky breath, "knew a guy."
"Hey, it's going to be okay. You aren't like her," I said reassuringly rubbing his bicep.
"I know, It's just that," he trailed off, "Nevermind, we should really be going."
He grabbed my hand, and I couldn't help but feel the butterflies in my stomach as he did so.
"Ready," He asked.
I nodded, and Keefe smacked the bead into the dirt. Instantly water started spilling out, Keefe placed his arm around me, bringing me to his side, and held my hand with his free arm. I squeezed his hand as the water started lapping at my feet, then my calves, thighs, waist, stomach, chest, neck.
"Keefe!" I called out, getting scared. It reminded me of the cave.
He held me tighter.
"Do you trust me?" he asked quickly.
"Of course!" I said as the water reached past my chin and over my lips. I kicked at the water, trying to swim up to the surface when Keefe plunged down, dragging me with him.
I held my breath as we swam to the bottom where the bead was glowing a light blue. Keefe whispered something and the tiny dot of light grew larger and wider, he swam through with me, still holding my hand.
We came out of a fountain outside of Everglen. Keefe grasped my arms and started checking for bumps.
"Are you okay?" he asks.
"Fine, are you?" I asked, my voice laced with concern.
He nods and then starts running towards the entrance. I crossed my fingers, begging for Alden to be okay.
