Mack wakes up when his wife and college-age kids have made it home through the ice storm. They get him patched up.

He doesn't tell his wife about the note, but is glad that it's a distraction from The Great Sadness. Now we learn what The Great Sadness is. Except I already knew. Ha. On Labor Day weekend, his young daughter Missy disappeared on a camping trip when she was under his sole supervision. It doesn't explain what happened past that.

The rest of the chapter just describes the happy moments on that fateful camping trip, and we get to know Missy, who acts like the basic kid side character of almost every book.
