What I read in June 2019

2019 is more than half over. We're closer to next Christmas than last Christmas.

Anyway I ripped through ten books again but I'm not reading anything intellectually stimulating over here. Quantity over quality ✌️

4 of these were Kid Lit Exchange books, 2 were review-for-review, and 4 were books I just chose. Let's dive in.
1.

This was a review-for-review deal and it was as crappy as it looks and sounds. I was nice, though. Still awaiting my review in return. It better be worth it.

By the way, Mr. Brownsfield is 18, AN 18 YEAR OLD CHILD, and is referred to as Mr. Brownsfield the entire book.

2.

Kid Lit Exchange book #1. There are two kinds of middle grade: MG for kids and MG for anyone. This was the former but I was surprised by how much I ended up liking it. It was really cute. Also, I was heavily tempted to pull out a pencil and work through all the puzzles in the book. Alas, I could not.

3.

I watched part of this movie in a hotel room one time and decided to read the book. I thoroughly enjoyed every page. It was a guilty pleasure except I didn't feel guilty. I found Greg's voice to be fantastic.

4.

Kid Lit Exchange book #2. This was like A Wrinkle in Time but reversed (mother and son) and I actually liked it better than A Wrinkle in Time. It was a good one. I enjoyed it.

5.

Years ago, like when the movie was coming out, I started reading Perks. I didn't finish it because of all the mature content. I decided to read it again last month and this time didn't blink an eye, which proves I have ruined my mind in the last six or seven years and I'm going to hell. Anyway, I didn't like this book. It was kind of boring. Let's compare it to Me, Earl, and the Dying Girl: Charlie's voice was as well-developed as Greg's and both had depressing circumstances, but Greg's voice made it darkly hilarious. So I enjoyed Perks less because it was boring and depressing.

6.

Kid Lit Exchange book #3. This book started out as decent but went down a weird track with a dark Alice in Wonderland-y vibe. I would have been okay with that, but it was also almost preachy. The world was fantastically well-developed, though.

7.

Kid Lit Exchange book #4. This book, on the other hand—it had a few minor issues but MY GOSH THE SETTING WAS FANTASTIC. The author was born, raised, and lives in the Philippines and she just places you there in the midst of it. You can see, smell, taste, hear everything. Fantastic writing for that reason.

8.

I need to say something to the world.

I 👏 FREAKING 👏 LOVED 👏 NIMONA

I didn't have the slightest clue what it would be like but MY GOSH IT'S AMAZING.

So hysterical. So quick and clever. So genius. So heartbreaking.

9.

This is another review-for-review. The cover is the stuff of nightmares and the story itself was boring. Nothing fun or funny happened and I didn't bond with any of the characters. The author already put her review of mine out on Goodreads and, to quote autumn_sunfire, "Didn't quite get it on an integral level."

Seriously. She was so confused by the whole thing.

In other words, it was not worth dragging myself through this book just to receive a review where the author publicly expresses her dislike of and confusion over my own book.

10.

I somehow acquired an ancient copy of this recently and decided to read it because I enjoyed the two Paddington movies so much. This book is the epitome of delightful. Full of that British humor similar to the A.A. Milne books. The movie followed it pretty closely, too.

And that's it for June. I need to hit ten more in July and already have a lot of good ones lined up (ones different from my normal fare) so stay tuned.
