What I Read in August 2023
I read (barely) two books and listened to a record-breaking three audiobooks, which I hope proves that I did not sit down all month because I truly Did Not sit down.
1.
I listened to this and it was EVERYTHING I wanted World War Z to be and everything it wasn't. It was about these ordinary, detailed people surviving, escaping, living as the world ends. I really never knew what was going to happen. The audiobook was also SO good because each POV character was a different narrator and they all did really well. The book was good at introducing one POV character at a time and letting you get to know them before adding another one.
2.
I read this almost all month (never sat down), but it was a good choice. I don't remember The Hazel Wood AT ALL but that didn't matter because this book refreshed you enough along the way to make it make sense. I love Alice's voice. And I love love the worldbuilding.
3.
I don't know why the picture is so blurry. Yell at someone else. This was another audiobook and I enjoyed the narrator, and for some reason pictured the characters with crystal clarity. In 99.9% of books (SOMETIMES MY OWN) I just picture a vague person, maybe a specific hair color. But with this one I really came up with exactly what everyone looked like. It was also so painfully realistic from when I had gender dysphoria so badly. The safety outfit. The DREAD of clothes shopping. Despising your hair. All of it. I didn't even realize I HAD a comfort outfit as a young teenager until this book drew it to my attention.
4.
I picked this for a book club because I love it with all my heart but honestly it was nearing the end of the month and I had to cram-read it and couldn't really enjoy it.
5.
I almost quit listening to this because the narrator bugged me at first. I'm so glad I didn't, because I loved the story, and she was SO GOOD at many different accents and voices. I've come to realize that if I just give a narrator a chance, I end up liking them.
