The hunt
Silverpaw squeaked as he came into contact with his mother's side, being so deep in his thoughts he did not see her. "Silverpaw! Shadowclaw has been looking all over for you! She said that you were going to help her and Sorrelpaw look for dock leaves," Ravenpelt said, looking down at her son with a motherly look. Silverpaw had no clue what she was talking about, but if it were helping Sorrelpaw and the clan as a whole, he would do it. "I will go now," Silverpaw replied, giving his mom a lick on the leg before running off to the Oakfern's den.
"Ah, there you are Silverpaw! We were just about to leave," Shadowclaw said as her apprentice walked into the den, the smell of leaf-bare in the air; Silverpaw could hear coughing in a nest next to the wall. "Leafkit is sick with a cough. I will go look for honey while you two go look for Dock leaves, okay?" Shadowclaw asked as they all walked out of the den, a faint breeze making Silverpaw shiver. "Sure! I will lead Silverpaw to them right away!" Sorrelpaw replied, dashing off ahead of the warrior; Shadowclaw chuckled as Silverpaw raced after her, calling for Sorrelpaw to wait.
"Why are you in such a rush to get the Dock leaves?" Silverpaw asked his friend as he followed her, now at a fast walk, to wherever the leaves were, Sorrelpaw seeming to know the way. "No reason really; I just needed to get out of camp. Listen, can I tell you something?" Sorrelpaw said as she made a turn, her voice suddenly no louder than the wind. "Anything," Silverpaw replied, walking up to her side, fluffing out his fur again as he pressed his side next to her, offering his body warmth. "I can see... cat's," Sorrelpaw said, looking at the ground shyly as she pressed back, giving silent thanks. "What do you mean?" Silverpaw asked, curious to what she meant.
"I mean I can see dead cats," Sorrelpaw clarified, looking away; Silverpaw could feel her body tense as he knew she was waiting for him to start laughing, to make fun of her. "Really? That is so cool!" Silverpaw replied, deeply interested as he smiled at his friend; Sorrelpaw looked at him in surprise before smiling back, with a little more confidence. "I have been able to see them since I was a kit; my mom always thought I was playing by myself when I would go outside," Sorrelpaw purred, pressing closer with a shiver when another breeze blew.
When they reached a small field, Sorrerlpaw lead him to the Dock leaves, parting to tell him to gather as much as he could carry. "I would recommend carrying them like this," Sorrelpaw said when they had gathered a good number of leaves, tying them in a bundle before biting the top with her teeth. Repeating what she did slowly, Silverpaw bit the dock leaves and a slightly bitter taste entered his mouth, but he shook it off, following Sorrelpaw back to the camp. The camp was gathered in groups to keep warm as they shared tongues, sharing the little news that was in the camp at the time being.
Sorrelpaw led Silverpaw to the storage for the herbs, placing them down before telling her that he wanted to tell her something as well. "Can we go back out for this? I don't want anyone else to know but you," Silverpaw mewed, shuffling his paws lightly on the ground. "Sure; we can hunt while we talk," Sorrelpaw said, getting Silverpaw to nod as they left the storage, Oakfern easing some honey into Leafkit's mouth, her mother, Shiningpool telling her that she was doing great with gentle licks. Leafkit mewed lightly as she licked at the honey slowly at first before speeding up, loving the sweetness of the medicine.
"Oakfern, is it alright if I go hunting with Silverpaw for the time being?" Sorrelpaw asked her mentor. "Certainly; the clan could use all the fresh-kill it can get," Oakfern replied as he finished treating Leafkit, telling her to get some rest with gentle meows. "You need to be a big, brave warrior for your mother!" Oakfern smiled down to the kit before Sorrelpaw and Silverpaw left the den. "Let's go to the stream; voles are starting to go underground for the winter, but we can still get one or two," Silverpaw said, leading the way out of the camp, jumping rock to rock. "Yeah, that sounds good to me," Sorrelpaw replied with as they both trotted to the banks.
"So, what is it that you wanted to tell me?" Sorrelpaw asked after a while of silence. "You won't believe me, but I can see through other cats eyes," Silverpaw told her. "Huh?" Sorrelpaw asked, confused. "If I concentrate enough, I can see through another cat's eyes; I did that earlier when you were with Oakfern sorting herbs," Silverpaw told her, giving an example. Silverpaw felt her body heat up as she looked at him, smiling lightly before nuzzling his cheek; Silverpaw froze, his body flaring up with heat. "Then thank you for the compliment," Sorrelpaw purred, getting Silverpaw to nuzzle her back before they reached the banks.
"Let's see who can catch the most!" Sorrelpaw said before splitting up from Silverpaw, taking one side of the banks, leaving him alone. Silverpaw trotted to another part of the bank, scenting the air for vole, opening his mouth to let the scents of the bank to cover his tongue. Finding a fresh scent, Silverpaw dropped to a crouch, moving silently among the bank. A small vole was snuffling the ground in front of him, oblivious to the predator stalking it. Silverpaw waited a moment before pouncing, landing directly on top of the vole; he killed it with a single bite before it had time to squeal. Covering the prey with dirt, Silverpaw continued with his hunt, taking note of where it is before moving on.
The day seemed to fly by faster than ever, Silverpaw and Sorrelpaw having teamed up for the hunt half-way through the day. "I think we caught enough vole's for today; what do you think?" Silverpaw asked as they gathered their prey, a pile of prey in front of them, ten voles laying at there paws. "I think the clan would love the food. Let's go ahead and take it back," Sorrelpaw said, picking up one as an idea hit Silverpaw. "Here; let's carry some on our backs; that will lessen the number of trips we have to make," Silverpaw said, laying down to let his friend put some on his back. Silverpaw took four while being able to stand, one in his mouth, Sorrelpaw doing the same as they slowly walked back to camp, a cold wind blowing around them.
Silverpaw thought about how proud his mentor was going to be when they walked into camp with all the prey they had caught, how happy everyone would be when they could eat fully. When they reached the camp, Silverpaw dropped the vole in his mouth and called for someone; a lot of heads turned to them, several meows responding in kind before Silverpaw saw a cat run forward to help them. "Thanks, Shadowspring," Silverpaw said, nodding to the senior warrior with a respectful bob of his head as she took three voles from the each of them, placing the prey on her back.
"No, thank you; the two of you caught more than enough food to feed the clan," Shadowspring replied, getting a prideful pair out of the two apprentices. "Thanks; we tried our best," Sorrelpaw said as they both followed the warrior down to the camp, being careful not to drop the prey. Silverpaw looked down at the ground as they were greeted with happy calls, all the other members of Thunderclan moving to them and Shadowspring. "Good job Shadowspring. You and these two did well catching all this prey, not to mention it is excellent timing; Mapledust was complaining about not having anything to eat," Goldenstar said, getting a chuckled mrrow out of Silverpaw as Shadowspring spoke. "Goldenstar, I had nothing to do with this; the prey is all because of these two. They caught all this on there own," Shadowspring told her leader, getting him to look at the two apprentices with a respectful look.
Silverpaw could feel his fur start to heat up as he felt the entire clan look at him and Sorrelpaw, wishing nothing more than to be in his nest, away from everyone else. "Well, let's not just look at the prey; let's eat!" Sorrelpaw said, getting a cheer from everyone else as Silverpaw sighed, thankful for his friend's words. As everyone moved to get a bite to eat, Shadowclaw moved to them, looking proud. "You did well you two; especially you Silverpaw. I didn't teach you how to stalk a vole, yet you caught a lot with Sorrelpaw!" Shadowclaw complimented, getting Silverpaw to shuffle his paws embarrassedly.
"We just work well together, that is all," Silverpaw replied, his pelt heating up as he saw his mom looking at them with a smile on her face, making it all the worse when she started to walk over to them. "I will go get you two something to share; you two deserve to rest," Shadowspring said; Silverpaw then realized who tired he was, the ache suddenly filling his body. "Thanks, Shadowspring," Silverpaw murmured, staggering his way to the apprentice den, Sorrelpaw on his heels.
They both soon collapsed in there nest's, the moss feeling great as they relaxed. "Why were we out so long?" Silverpaw whined, his paws killing him. "We were having so much fun, that is why," Sorrelpaw replied; she tried to sound positive, but Silverpaw could hear the pain in her voice. Silverpaw could only agree silently, smiling to himself as he thought back to the day they had spent together.
"Hey, you love birds! I brought you two something to eat!" Shadowspring said, sliding in the apprentice den with a vole in her jaws, dropping it between the two's nest's; they meowed their thanks. "Do you two need poppy seeds? I would think you two are sore right now," Shadowspring murrowed, getting the two to mewl in agreement. "I will be right back; you two eat while I am gone," the warrior told them before leaving the den.
Silverpaw dragged himself to his paws as he moved to the vole, Sorrelpaw doing the same thing, wincing with each paw-step. Silverpaw laid down next to the prey and started to eat without speaking, tearing off a mouthful and chewing tiredly at first, but picking up speed as the taste of vole covered his tongue, savoring the flavor. "Wow; I never thought vole could taste so good!" Sorrelpaw said when she finished a bite, Silverpaw nodding in silent agreement.
When Shadowspring came back with the poppy seeds, Silverpaw ate one after he finished eating his share, going back into his nest afterward, sleep luring him to his dreams quickly.
There we go! Chapter six done and over with! I think this one is a little better than the others; I hope so at least...
Stay hunting,
