Chapter 15-Leo
"A werewolf?" I asked Zero with disbelief.
Zero looked amused. We were crowding around a dusty book we had found hidden in a cavity in the library. The night was restless and we had unconsciously found ourselves in the library having not been on guard duty.
The book was titled 'mysteries of the werewolf" and so far it had proven to be interesting.
"How is this a mystery?" Zero laughed hysterically,"everyone knows that wolf secretary Mrs.Lonsdale wasted all her time taking care of the last Alpha Queen Lyra. I still think it's funny but I don't know why,"
"I can just imagine an old lady running around with her walking stick," I chuckled along.
"Don't be rude," Zero cried out with laughter.
When we had finally calmed down we decided to turn back to the book. I took hold of the threadbare paper and turned it, expecting to find another 'knowledgeable page.' Instead we were surprised to read an unexpected title. The next entry was labeled "Alpha Queen Life and Tragic Death." All the previous entries had been proved comical in a way while this title sent chills down our spines.
"How did she die?" I thought aloud.
"It said her body wasn't found but she died while going to the mountain. I never believed it though. Alpha's don't ever die like that. Alpha King Will also disappeared with her. It was a real surprise," Leo declared with a frown.
"What was her name?" I asked.
"Lyra? Yes. Many people didn't think she was the Alpha Queen or decided not to mention it so it isn't any clear knowledge until after her death. They say she has a daughter who was suppose to take over after her but there was a declaration that your father would take over until her daughter was ready to rule." he continued.
I was startled to hear this. Ziva would be the daughter of Lyra but that meant she was to take over as Alpha. But that didn't make sense. Wouldn't Ziva have to be a werewolf to be the daughter of an alpha? Before I had a chance of explaining my theory, Zero who was oblivious to this information, began reading the entry.
Alpha Queen Lyra was found dead along with the Alpha King. There is no clear evidence as to how they died. Many people have said that the alpha Queen had a mysterious curse, her eyes would turn red and she would lose all control. Apart from her death, her life is debatable and not many people know what she has been up to. Even so, witnesses have voiced that she had helped them anonymously. Furthermore, it is recorded that she had a daughter. named...
"Hey Leo, it says her daughter's name was Ziva," Zero voiced after reading through most of the page.
It wasn't a surprise for me that Ziva was the descendant of the werewolf throne however, it didn't explain why her mother had killed my family. Even if she did have a curse, it was no reason to go against someone who was innocent. She should use it for the criminals that were left to us to handle. I tried to stay calm as I answered him.
"I'm pretty sure it's a mistake. Wouldn't Ziva have been a werewolf if she was her daughter,"
I remembered a story of a werewolf whose parents had hidden her werewolf qualities inside her because they hadn't wanted anyone to harm her. Zero was nodding as if he understood. I could see that he was remembering the same story. There was a second part of the story that I was about to remember when Zero continued the passage.
it is recorded that she had a daughter, named Ziva. Since she was a child when she was appointed the werewolf throne, Mark Vane has been the leader for the past 10 years. Ziva can regain the throne once she becomes sixteen. Mark Vain has been said to have wanted to kill Ziva because he wants the throne to himself. It would be easy for him to do since he has been placed in charge of her since her parents had died. Mark's son has said to have been Lyra's child but was given to Mary Malone at childhood because of an unknown reason.
Zero's voice became quieter as he finished the sentence,"I'm not sure this is a coincidence."
"It's not," the door opened and a man's shadow bounced off the tall bookshelves,"it's all true."
The sudden voice made me and Zero turn around with a jolt. There in the doorway stood my father with a crooked smile. I wasn't sure that I should trust him after reading the passage in the book.
"What's true master?" Zero asked, hopeful that what we heard was wrong.
We had all respected my father one time or another by his overwhelming presence.
"All of what you have just heard," he answered as he strolled towards us, "I took you poor homeless people in because of the fame I would receive. You all believed me, every one of you."
"We're not even special. How could you use us?" Zero inquired, not giving up hope that he hadn't been betrayed.
"That's obvious. Zero, you, son of the sister of alpha queen Lyra and also the son of the only werewolf who stood up to a dragon. I could use you to rule over these ignorant folk. Oh yes,-,"
Just then Sky came rushing in through the door, her breath heaving.
"Headmaster," she stopped as she saw my father's crooked smile and Zero's startled look. She looked towards us and I shook my head, a sign to remain silent.
"Perfect time Sky. Why don't you join us while we discuss how you are useful," he smiled with triumph, "You're not quite useful yourself. Your parents were the friend of the alpha king and queen. Oh, how I laughed when they were gone. That is what they deserve."
Sky looked startled but seemed to have something she wanted to say when the headmaster signaled that he wasn't done yet.
"Leo. The son of the alpha royalty. I could easily have gotten the throne from you but my wife stopped me. She was always in the way saying that you needed to be protected but when she died, I could finally start my plans. That was what I thought but there was your sister. Ziva," he paused.
I looked at him with disgust and surprise similar to Zero. This book was proving to be true. More lifelike than I would have liked.
"If she was my sister, how is she not a werewolf?" I asked shakingly.
"That mother of yours sacrificed herself to seal any trace of werewolf but it didn't entirely work. That's why she's changing into a werewolf now. It is her sixteenth birthday. I should have finished her off with her parents. Must be a shock to hear that I killed the alpha king and queen."
I suddenly remembered what the book had said about what would happen when Ziva turned sixteen.
"Zero! Leo! The Oracle. Ziva's there right now." Sky whispered.
We glanced at the headmaster and saw he was too absorbed in telling us about his plan of stealing the throne to notice us as we ran out of the room. Even in the explaining he did, I still wondered why he hadn't attempted to kill me. Wasn't the first child the one to rule next. I ignored the rant the master was putting on as I grabbed onto the book and held it towards me, knowing I would need it later.
We hurried past the wicked man as quietly as we could. Only when we had gone into the forest did we hear the master yell out for us. We hurriedly ran, not bothering to change into our wolf forms, Sky in the lead. We couldn't afford to lose time after everything we had heard.
Sky stopped short at a somewhat tall hall that stood near the clearing. The door stood slightly ajar and we took it as a sign that we should go inside. The only room we could see was looming to a side. I hesitantly opened the door and found a strange sight. The words the headmaster had said still fresh in my mind.
