Chapter 22

Namara sat up on the X-Ray table, rubbing the back of her neck, "Are you done yet Bruce?"

"Yeah, thanks for your patience. Now I just need to take some blood and you can head to your room. It's right next to the kid's, so you can keep an eye on him."

   "Cool."

Namara glanced up at the ceiling, trying to look at anything but the needle Bruce was prepping. Namara hated needles. She focused on a single ceiling tile with her mismatched eyes and felt a brief sting as Bruce drew her blood.

As soon as the needle left her skin, the tiny hole healed up without a trace.

"I'll analyze this and get back to you, get some rest Namara. You've been up for two days now," Bruce said.

"Yeah, wake me up as soon as the kid wakes up," Namara called behind her as she walked out of Bruce's lab.

Pulling open the door to her room, Namara glanced around. It was exactly how it had been when she left. Namara collapsed on her bed without taking off her shoes or changing out of her SHIELD uniform, she was sound asleep within minutes.

Namara scrambled away from the door of her cell as it swung open. She could see the doctors standing there, and she struggled as they dragged her out of the cell. There was a stabbing pain in the back of her neck as a needle was jabbed into her skin and she blacked out.

When Namara opened her eyes she was strapped down onto a table. Restraints holding her arms and legs down, she screamed and writhed trying to get free. A needle was stabbed down into her arm and where it touched fiery pain burst into Namara's bones.

She tried to sit up, pulling at the restraints, a doctor grabbed her hair, jerking her back down.

"Stop! Please! Let me go!" Namara screamed.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Namara sat up, gasping, clutching her head. It had been a long time since she'd had that nightmare. Namara had built up walls in her mind to stop herself from seeing her time in HYDRA every time she closed her eyes, and now seeing that kid had brought the wall tumbling down.

Standing up, Namara walked into the small bathroom. She didn't need to turn the lights on, Namara had excellent night vision, she could see in complete darkness. Running her hands through her hair, Namara grimaced, she could practically feel the doctors hands in her hair, jerking her back by it.

Unsheathing her knife, Namara grabbed a piece of a hunk of hair and chopped it off. She stood in front of the mirror for the next fifteen minutes, chopping at her hair until it hung jagged around her ears. No one could ever grab it again.

Pulling off her jacket, Namara looked down at her forearm. The needle that had been driven into her arm had been large, large enough to scar. There were tiny scars on her arm, needle marks. Namara had more scars than she could count, but still she found some she couldn't remember getting. But they all had one thing in common, they had happened at HYDRA, before she could heal.

But she was strong now, strong enough to protect herself and to keep that boy safe.
