Chapter 50

Very quickly a schedule formed with Enya and me. After breakfast, I would drop her off at school then I would leave for the day. Once I came back we would go outside she would play on the play structure out there well I ran, and most of the time we will play together after. Or if it was too cold find a quiet library to read.

We will go to dinner at the set time and then reside in our room for some board games. Enya will sometimes show Sam and me any new spells she learned with Clarice. We did this schedule every day and every day I will leave the base to check the perimeter for any possible activity. Get some feeding in, then return.

Enya woke up frightened the first few times I got up but now she goes back to sleep as she knows it's only me. There have been no more murders luckily but that can be even more dangerous. I don't know what they are planning.

Walking into the base after another long day of scouting I feel a tug on my arm. Turning around I lock eyes with Damon. "What is it, Damon?"

He fidgets with his fingers his heart picking up slightly. "Can we talk somewhere private?"

Worry flows through me quickly, I nod leading him to an empty room. Checking the hall I close the door putting up a sound barrier. "What is it?" I ask facing him. I haven't seen him in almost a week since the funeral.

He scratches his head averting his eyes. "I'm sorry it took me so long to talk to you."

" It's okay Damon you don't have to apologize for anything." I put a hand on his shoulder squeezing it.

He shakes my hand off turning away from me. "But I do it's my can't Jen and Kaitlyn are dead, you family I should have known-"

"Hey Damon calm down, you didn't know the targets were Jen and Kaitlyn. Plus you weren't even with them at the time they attacked my family remember."

He runs a hand through his hair pulling at it "I wasn't but I was still a part of it here."

Sighing I gently grasp his hands taking them out of his hair. "Yes, but you stopped and you decided to help that was brave. I do not blame you nobody does and if they do they have to come through me."

He leans into me resting his head against my neck. "But it's my fault."

Sighing I hold him one hand on his head and the other on his back. "No, it is not Damon how many times-"

He leans away from me but still stays in my grasp. "Not that it's my fault they know."

My face scrunches "know what?"

He sighs this time leaning back out of my grasp against a table " it's my fault they know about you."

"Know about me in what way?"

His hands go back to his hair "know what you are, they sensed it days ago but figured it out from how much I have been talking to you. They want to recruit you the only issue is they can't figure out what you are from how much power they felt."

It was my turn to run my hands through my hair loosening the braid I had. " It's from when I was hunting after my scouting, I removed the block for a few seconds." Huffing I slam my hand against a chair "FUCK."
Damon rushes over at my loud outburst "I'm fine Damon, it's not your fault it's mine. At least now I know why things have been quiet with them."

I smile trying to lighten the mood, he chuckles dryly shaking his head "sorry to be the burden of bad news Indra but I am no longer the inside man. They kicked me out."

A small smile graces my face at his nickname. "That's fine Damon you have done more than enough. Plus this should keep me busy for a few months at least until the snow melts." And keep my mind occupied.

He smiles looking down at his feet "yeah...aaa thanks" I laugh as he grimaces brushing some hair out of his eyes.

"Thank you, Dam. I have to go and get Enya she is waiting for me." I hug him quickly before leaving the room.

Enya sits waiting like every other day. A book in hand, but never a kid's book which I find interesting. She notices me quickly jumping up to run for her daily hug. holding her tight I say a quick goodbye to Clarice before taking Enya's hand. Enya takes her jacket from my hands as we exit the building.

Skipping over to the playground I wave to the parents and guardians watching their kids. Enya runs over saying hi to the other kids joining them in their game. Some small talk is exchanged between the adults and me but we don't talk much anyway. Standing up I wave catching Enya's attention. Motioning to the track beside us Enya nods understanding my meaning.

Starting my slow jog I disappear behind the building around the track. Passing other runners I nod to some keeping my pace. Two laps in I pass behind the building on the other side of the track from where I started. An invisible barrier nocks me back blocking my way. Turning around I come face to face with one of the witches and the head demon and vampire.

Widening my stance I cross my arms faking relaxation. "What do you want?" My voice comes out even and steady with no hostility at the moment.

The witch steps forward "skipping straight to the point I see, I thought people your age would try to beat around the bush with some friendly conversation first?" Her voice sends chills down my spine, the smooth almost hypnotizing calmness trumps even my most feared voice.

"Well I was never one to lengthen a conversation more than needed, so back to my first question what do you want?" Her eyes flash at my hidden hostility before returning to their calm blue.

"We mean you no harm Kaindra we just want to talk."

Ignoring her use of my name I raise an eyebrow leaning back against the barrier. "Then talk I'm not stopping you" she sheaths at my flippancy plastering on an oh-so-fake smile.

"How old are you Kaindra? one with such power must be old."

Shock shots up my spine at her statement of my power not even hiding that they knew. Swallowing the shock I keep my face neutral. "Not as old as you might think."

My simple ignorance of her call at my power makes her stiffen as she tries to keep her temper in check. "If you are as young as you say you are would I guess no older than hundred?"

I nearly tumble over in laughter a hundred wow she scooped high. "Then your guess would have to be younger I am now older than sixteen." The two men at her side stumble back in shock not even trying to hide their thoughts.

The witch's eyes widen, the only sign of her shock. "Well I see that you are just a young vampling might I ask how long you have been one?"

"You just did so I am inclined to answer, I turned a year and a half ago." This time the witch doesn't hold back her shock. All three of their eyes widen so much I swear they are going to pop out of their sockets.

The witch is the first one to compose herself "a year and a half ago you say, my my are we lucky then to have found you before anyone else." The grin on her face is unmistakeably dark.

Enya might be worried I have been gone for too long, lets's rap this up. "Well if that is all then I will be on my way."

I begin to turn around ready to push through the barrier "that is not what we came here to talk about vampling."

Turning my head I look at the old witch over my shoulder "then might I ask what might it be that you came to me?" Come on witch answer me I know your reason I just need you to say it.

"I will get to that but first might I ask are you a hybrid, only hybrids can hold such power so quickly."

Releasing an aggravated breath I turn fully to them once again. "No I am not a hybrid," the lie slips off my tonged like butter. The vampire's ear flicks most likely checking to see if I am lying, he won't find anything lying is second nature to me always has been will be.

He nods to the witch confirming that I am telling the truth. "Interesting very interesting," I catch the small words as they leave her just a breath on the wind. "Well, Kaindra we have come to make a proposition to you."

She stops making sure I am listening "go on."

"We would like for you to join us and become one of us, you would follow under Michal here. We promise that you and the child under your care will be safe."

My eyes darken she can not bring Enya into this. Keeping my face as calm as possible my eyes are the only sign of what I think. "No, I will not join you."

The witch's hands become fists "why not Kaindra you and the child will have nothing to worry about under our protection."

"I said no now let me out of this barrier," the hostility leaks through my voice in a calm wave.

The demon and Michal move slightly in front of the witch "now child think carefully about this you wouldn't want anything to happen to the little girl at the playground now would you?" My hands clamp tight shutting off the fire and ice that wants to break free.

"The child is under my protection and I said no, you touch her and I will never think about joining you." My voice is dark with a warning.

The witch drops her mask showing me the dark person underneath "now vampling I would think carefully about how you talk to me you don't want anything to happen to your human friends either."

The shadows around me waver reaching ever so slightly towards the three in front of me. Pulling them back to where they were I watch the three making sure they didn't notice the activity. Letting out a breath slowly I keep a stronghold on myself. "If you touch anyone I will never join you are we clear, yes then let me out."

Not waiting for a response I turn around pushing on the barrier till I feel it dissipate. "Remember vampling we will be waiting." I hear them leave behind me, continuing my way back to Enya my body slowly relaxes the closer I get. Man, I hate being extra polite to people, especially bad people.
