twenty-two
"Madison?" I asked looking at the girl who stood in my doorway. Her crystal blue eyes concentrated on my face as soon as it was revealed from opening the door.
I must say I was surprised to see her here. I hadn't talked to Madison in some time since she told me should couldn't help me. I understood that she didn't want to lose her trust with Valerie the mother but it also frustrated me.
"Hi, can I come in?" Madison asked with her eyes cast down, giving off a vibe as of she needed to talk. I was willing to talk to Madison and hep her with whatever she needed, not only because I cared for her but also because I needed her.
"Yes, of course come on in!" I encouraged moving aside so that she could enter into the messy apartment that was scattered with baby things and school supplies. I had no idea anyone was coming over and didn't bother to clean up.
"So what's going on?" I walked with Madison over to the couch where we both sat, Asher was put down for a nap about two hours ago and would no doubt be waking up any minute now.
"We need to talk." Madison answered fiddling with the little silver banded ring on her finger.
"About?" I gave her a puzzled expression about what she was talking about. I was already cloudy on why she had come her in the first place.
"Valerie. I'm worried about her and I have no one else to talk to." I was shocked as Madison looked me straight in the eyes with her crystal clear blue eyes.
"What's going on? Has she contacted you?" Questions bubbled into my head now hearing Madison bring up the infamous Valerie.
"No, but that's why I'm worried. When she left she wasn't in a good place like I said and I'm just scared she's gotten into trouble. I mean it's not like she hasn't gotten herself into trouble before, it's like it follows her." Madison said tucking some blonde hair behind her ear.
"Who is she?" This was the only question I hadn't had answered and all I was seeking was clarity on her identity.
"Valerie changed her name, that's why you see Valerie Clements on the birth certificate but, you probably better know her as Keira Clements." Madison explained sparking a light bulb as soon as she said her name.
"Keira!" I spoke out loud standing up and putting my hands through my hair as the realization came back. It was all coming back to me now, I knew exactly who Keira was.
"Yeah, she never fully disclosed why she changed her name but I'm guessing it had something to do with her family." Madison went into as much as she knew which wasn't everything. I guess Keira had kept the few details to herself.
Keira and I had hooked up twice due to her wild side. I liked the time we spent together but knew she was never girlfriend material, she was too wild and crazy to ever settle down. I still remember our hook ups like it was yesterday, one of them resulting in a unplanned pregnancy. Never once did I think or even suspect Keira being involved in this but as Madison said, trouble apparently follows closely behind her.
Hearing Asher begin to scream for me, signaling he was awake I told Madison I would be back in just a second. Pacing towards my bedroom I laid eyes on Asher who cried in his crib waiting to be tended to.
"Hey buddy!" I greeted bending over the crib to pick him up. Watching him rub his eyes as I patted his back getting him to calm down immediately. Finding his binkie on the changing table I stuck it in his mouth and walked back out into the living room where Madison sat looking at her phone screen.
"So she changed her name from Keira to Valerie.... That explains why it was signed with a K on the note. So you knew she was pregnant then?" I sat down next to Madison while Asher laid his head on my shirt still adjusting to waking up.
"I was the first person she told. I have never seen a woman so scared of something in her life. She kept telling me over and over again that she wasn't ready, that if her parents ever found out they would kill her." Madison shook her head looking at Asher who still laid on my shoulder, hands clutched to my shirt.
"Not only that but when she told me you were the father, she freaked out even more. She said that you were careless and reckless, that she couldn't ever tell you because you were... Well you." Madison went on spouting off about how Keira had handled the news of her pregnancy.
"That still doesn't give her a valid reason to not tell me, so why now? Asher was two months old when she dropped him off." I brought up not fully understanding Keira's reasoning.
"All I know is she tried to deal with the baby but for whatever reason she couldn't do it anymore. She didn't really tell me why but I'm worried about her. Her life was a shit show from where I was standing and I'm just scared for her. I don't know where she is and she hasn't contacted me, I just don't know what to do." Madison told me looking back up into my eyes.
"This is just... I don't even..." I stumbled over words learning about what Madison knew of this situation. "
"We could have figured this out. She didn't have to lie."
"I guess she didn't know what else to do. I just hope she's okay, last time I talked to her she said she was headed to California."
"What's in California?" Why would Keira run so far away from the city? What was on California for her? Keira was a girl full of mysteries, a girl so complicated you couldn't even begin to unravel her.
"I don't know, she just said she needed to get as far as she could. She was afraid of something more but she wouldn't tell me." Madison gave me a nervous expression as I heard her try to make sense of all this. There were unknown reasons as to why Keira left that not even Madison knew. Keira still remained a mystery but I was going to solve her, she owed me an explanation to this.
"What could she have been afraid of?" I was thinking out loud but came up with no theories. I didn't know Keira all that well, like I said I hooked up with her twice.
"She wouldn't tell me but all I know is that she was scared enough to leave everything behind." Feeling Asher arch his back I stood him up on his feet to face me, a little smile curling at his lips as he bent his legs causing him to bounce.
"What about her parents! Do they know about any of this?" Asher cooed loudly once I moved my gaze to Madison who looked shocked, standing up abruptly.
"Harry you can't go to her parents! Promise me you won't get involved with them." I could see Madison in distress from the mention of Keira's parents. From Madison's reaction I could only think Keira had bad blood with them although this was all an assumption.
"What if they know where she is Madison?"
"I seriously doubt they know much about her. Just don't talk to them, trust me you don't want to get involved with them." Madison stressed making bed parents out to be someone of a threat. I didn't know why Madison was so against getting help fro Keira's family but curiosity was eating at me.
"Okay." I nodded looking back at Asher who was sucking on his binkie looking at me with those big blue eyes that held so much without saying a word.
"He's a beautiful baby anyway, what can I say; you make beautiful babies." Madison comment running her index finger down Asher's soft rosy cheek.
"Do you want to hold him?" I asked her seeing her blue eyes longingly look at Asher.
"Can I?" I nodded handing him over to her. Smiling at the baby he sat down on her lap as she held his wrists so he could sit upright.
"I'm sorry little guy, you don't deserve to be in the middle of this mess." Madison talked to the baby that was more interested in the little silver band wrapped around Madison's finger. Sucking in white white binkie he payed no mind to Madison as he tried to pull of Madison's ring, he was so unaware.
