Ch. 5
Chris’ P.O.V.
“You’re dismissed.” And he leaves. Just leaves me here; standing in the hallway.
Shit! I’m in trouble. Shit! What is he planning to do? Why would he even concern himself with this? This is my issue, not his.
‘Chris you should go home.’
‘How can I go home?’
‘Chris…’
‘No. how can I go home?’
‘Chris.’
I don’t acknowledge him.
‘Chris’
I grit my teeth.
‘You should go home’
I growl at him.
‘Go home.’
I bare my teeth at him.
‘You are aware that you’re challenging someone that’s inside your head.’ said with a laugh. He seems to think that this is funny.
‘And are you aware that I can make your life very difficult very easily?’
If he had a face, I know it would have fallen. I can feel it. Good.
‘Yes, I’m aware.’
Feeling like I have won our argument, I continue to stare at the door. Trying to burn hols through it.
‘I’m aware because I can do the same to you.’
I let out a frustrated puff of air.
‘There is no need for that, ok. There is nothing else that you can do.’
I was about to say something else to him, but he cut me off before I could.
‘Just go home.’
Sighing, I reluctantly leave. He’s right I can’t do much for her. But I can’t help but try.
-
I’m passing my room. No matter my attempts to sit down. Or my attempts to calm down. I just can’t. So, here I am. Walking from one side of the room to the other, uncontrollably. I just can’t get over it. ‘You’re dismissed’ just ‘you’re dismissed’. And he walked into her room. What is he even thinking? What is he even doing? What is he doing with her?
‘Chris, there is no need for you to worry. She is perfectly safe with him. He is a man of his word.’
‘I’m sorry. But you really aren’t helping.’
‘I can assure you that he will not harm her.’ Then he goes silent. Almost as if he realised something.
‘Look, don’t get me wrong. I trust the guy with my life. I respect the guy too. And you know that's saying a lot. The only person I respect more than him is my dad. I just don’t trust him with her life. Hell, I don’t even trust her with her life.’
I can sense his confusion. I can even imagine his wolfie head tilting to the side.
‘Yes, I know that that didn’t, and doesn’t, make sense. But you understand. Well… you at least partially understand. Right?’
‘Yes, I understand.’
I let out a sigh of relief. You know you've gone beyond the point of return when the person inside your head doesn’t even understand you.
Shit, if I was still human I would need a straight jacket.
“At least you understand me.” I say allowed scratching the back of my neck.
‘Try to get some sleep.’
‘Even if it wasn’t eighteen minutes past one in the afternoon. What makes you so sure that I’ll manage to sleep? When I haven’t been sleeping properly since Shay got here?’
‘She is fine. Get some sleep. I’ll wake you if need be.’
‘You won’t let anyone harm her, right?’ Climbing onto my bed.
‘No harm will come to our sister.’
That makes me smile. It’s a tired smile. But hay, it’s still a smile.
‘I’m glad you think of her like that.’ The smile still placed on my face.
‘Sleep.’ He threatens
And I just laugh.
‘Ok. Ok.’ I barely manage to say as I fall to sleep.
