Ch. 20
Alx's P.O.V.
"That's for me to know and for you to find out." Only just managing to wipe the smile/ grin off my face.
She knits her eye browse together, before leaning her head on the headboard again.
"And what does that mean?"
"That's for me to know and for you to find out."
"And people say that I pash their buttons." she states non caringly and tiredly. Closing her eyes she just sits there. And I just watch her. Opening them, her eyes find me and she sighs. Not liking that I'm still here. I guess.
"Surely this bothering session can continue another time. I would really like to be alone."
I shake my head.
Sighing again, she looks at me with a blank expression.
"Get out of my room." she calmly demands.
I shake my head.
"Get out!"
I shake my head.
"leave."
"No. "
"Why are you here?" she asks, trying not to lose her cool.
"See how you are."
"Is your task not done then?"
"Not quite."
"Get out." Said with the same blank face.
I shake my head at her
Without warning, she takes the pillow beside her and throws it at me. I dodge it. I look back at Shayla, her hand is covering her eyes, jaw clenched, body stiff. She's in pain, physical pain.
"What is it?" Worried. My own body going stiff.
"None of your businesses."
"Shayla."
She says nothing just takes a breath in, holding it for a moment, before letting it go slowly. Her injuries.
"Did you rip a stitch?" I ask standing from my spot.
"No just pulled on a few of them." She states, still not moving.
"Are you Ok?" walking to her side. I'm about to put my hand on her shoulder to give her some comfort.
"Don't touch me." Moving away from me. Angering me.
"Let me have a look."
"like hell." Moving further away from me.
"Have you been to your check-ups?"
"No. Not yet." she answers honestly, now standing on the other side of the bed.
"Why?"
"Chris is either working or sleeping. I don't want to bother him. I'm already enough of a bother are it is."
You shouldn't have to ask him.
"Fine. I'll take you."
She looks at me shocked "I don't want you to take me."
"Don't care, let's go."
"No."
"Shayla. Going to your check-ups was is part of the agreement. Refusing to go to your check-ups will lead to you going back to that room where you are unable to leave. Would you prefer that?"
"No." gritting her teeth.
"Then let's go."
Bitching her tongue, she puts on a pair of black seekers, grabs her phone and what I believe to be her wallet. With that, we left.
-
At the hospital gates, we walk in. Like the rest of the walk here, everyone's gaze follows us. They think it's odd that I'm letting her walk in front of me. I don't care. I need to to be walking behind in her. If I walked in front of her, she might have taken that as an excuse to go back to Chris'. I can't have that. I need to make sure she sees Doc. She needs to get better.
Shayla slows down her pace, not knowing where to go next. Using hand gestures, l lead her to Doc's office. Open the door, I let Shayla walk in first. Doc looks up from his papers.
"Shayla." Greeting her with a smile, granting him a short wave "Alpha" greeting me with a nod.
"Doc" returning the greeting as I close the door behind me.
"I was wondering when I was going to see you, Shayla."
"Well, it was a mission to get her here." I confess, earning me a glare.
"Am I that bad?" he asks looking at Shayla.
"It really has nothing to do with you, doc. I just hate hospitals. Hate the smells, hate the sounds. Nothing personal." She answers plainly.
"You sure it's not just because of unbelievably stubborn?" I ask taking a seat in the chair beside her.
She just glares at me again.
"Why is that Shayla?"
"You're only ever at a hospital if you or someone you care about is hurt." She answers honestly.
That took him off guard. "Oh. I understand. So, then. Let's get this over and done with. Have you been tending to you wounds regularly?"
"Yes."
"Have been taking your medicine?'
"Yes."
I huff at that. Yea, right.
"Pain pills aren't medicine." She states quietly, not bothering to look at me. I just bite my tongue.
It's silent for a moment.
"I'll take you to the room across the hall to have a look. If that's ok?" he asks nicely, starting to leave the room.
"Yea, that's fine. " Getting up and following the doc to the room. I get up to follow them.
"No." She states sternly. Giving me a look. Telling me that she won't back down.
Right, I'm still a stranger to her. Nodding my head I sit back down again. With that, she leaves the room.
A surprised look is placed on doc's face for a moment. "It will only take a minute or two, Alpha. She's a good patient."
Not really.
I nod my head allowing him to leave.
-
Doc walks back into the room, Shayla follows shortly after.
Opening one of his desk draws, doc takes out a notebook. His prescription book, I believe. Quickly writing down what Shayla needs and hands them to her.
"These are refull of your current medication. You'll need to go to the front office to get them. But for now, do you mind waiting outside while I have a talk with the Alpha?" Doc asks nicely.
Nodding her head Shayla starts to walk out the room. I don't want that
"No. Sit down."
She just stands there still giving me a blank look.
"It's not a good Idea you setting alone."
Rolling her eyes she sits down.
" Right, so sorry Alpha, I didn't think of that." doc apologies a little shocked at himself.
"Whatever you want me to talk about she can hear it too." I inform him.
"Right. OK." Walking back to his desk. "Overall her words are healing well. Much better than they before."
So, me being next to her did help a bit.
'Told you.'
But in a few places, her stitches look red and irritated, like she's pulled them. Do you know anything about that?"
"Why? Didn't she tell you?"
He just shacks his head.
Of course, she didn't.
"She throw a pillow at me."
His wide eyes dart between us, shocked. Shayla gives me one of her blank looks again.
"You're lucky I didn't throw the light at you." She states under her breath.
"No. You're lucky that you didn't throw the light at me. It would have pissed me off." I inform her in a hushed tone as well.
"So? If you wanted to kill me you would have done it already."
I grit my teeth. This sit again.
"Why?" Doc asks. Oh, right. We're still in doc's office.
"I was 'bothering' her." I answer plainly
"All I wanted was to be left alone." letting a little bit of her frustration come out in her words.
" So, you throw a pillow at him?"
"Yes."
Doc binks a few times. "And you didn't think that you might get hurt in the processed?"
"No, I wasn't thinking that far ahead." she admits.
"If you had ripped your stitches, it would have set you back a by weeks."
"Yea, wasn't thinking that far ahead." She restates.
Doc shacks his head, sighing. "If you keep up with your medication. If you tend to them as you have been. And, if you don't pull on them. You should be able to get the stichers removed by next week. OK?"
Shayla just nods her head.
She could have her stitches teken out next week. Fantastic.
"Good. See you then, Doc." Getting up ready to leave. But Shayla stays seated.
"I don't want you to bring me."
"Well. One, as you said before, Chris is busy And two, I don't care." standing my ground.
She bits her tongue. "Fine." reluctantly getting up and leaving the room. I follow her. As I'm about to close the door, Doc stops me.
"Alpha?"
"Yes,?"
" Please be careful with the girl. I know she's trying your patience. Shes is only human, she doesn't understand." Concerned.
Not him as well.
"I will not harm her, Yes she is a bit trying. But I will never harm her. I gave Chris my word on that."
Maybe I should give Shayla my word as well. Maybe that will get through to her.
Doc just nods his head. With that, I catch up to Shayla. Get her pills and leave.
-
After opening the door, I gesture for her to go in first. She shoots me a questioned look before going inside
"OK, bye." waving over her shoulder leaving for her room.
"No, go sit on the couch."
"Nope." continuing to walk to her room.
" Shayla. " No answer, so I follow her. "I'm going to stay here whether you like it or not." taking a different path to get in front of her.
"Well, you can stay here as long as you like, but I won't be accompanying you." She states looking over her shoulder, not seeing me in front of her.
"Unfortunately, Shayla. There is something that I would like to talk to you about. Therefore you will be accompanying me. So, could you please go back and sit on the couch?" I ask in a calm manner.
Biting her tongue, Shayla turns around and walks back to the lounge.
" Thank you," following her.
Back at the lounge, Shayla takes a seat on the coach. I'm surprised that she didn't make any more attempts to go back to her room.
"You like coffee, yes?" walking into the kitchen
"Yes." I would think so. Considering you put your life on the line to get it.
Giving her the cup of coffee, she takes it and wraps both hands around it. Bring it up to her nose she inhales, then takes a sip before nodding her head. I can't help but smile.
" What was that for?" I ask, sitting down on the other side of the couch.
"Oh. Chris makes crap coffee. This is good I guess."
"Was that supposed to be a compliment?"
"You don't seem like the type of person that needs complements."
"Oh, ok." what does she mean by that? "But it's just instant coffee. How does Chris' make it taste like crap?"
She shakes her head. "Don't ask me." shrugging her shoulders.
With that, I take a sip of my coffee, before putting it down.
"Shayla. What you said earlier concerns me. You've said it before. But it still concerns me. I will never harm you."
Knitting her eyebrows together, she tilts her head before sitting straight again
" You seem fairly sincere. But even if you are. I won't hold you to that. You can't make a promise like that "
I just shake my head. Why is it so hard to get through to these people? I let out a puff of air before taking another sip of coffee, putting it done again. I look straight into her eyes. She returns the gaze, waiting for what I have to say.
"Let me make it very clear Shayla. I will never want to hurt you. Have never wanted to hurt you. I can never hurt you." looking deep into her eyes.
She just sits there looking at me. Eyes darting between mine, my face my hair and my posture. Before returning to my eyes, with a confused look placed on her face. She tills her head again. Trying to understand me, I guess.
After a moment she averts her gaze, leaning back into the conch and sighs.
"And to people say I'm odd"
"You are odd. No offence."
"You don't even know me."
"You don't know me. And you don't exactly make the task easy, Shayla."
"True. But did you ever think that maybe there's e reason for that? "
"No, I didn't. What might that be?"
"None I'd care to share with you."
"You're not very nice."
"That maybe be your opinion. And you're quite possibly right. But people don't tend to be nice to those that are bothering them."
"Ever thought that you're bothering me as well?"
"I didn't have to think about it. But why would you ever want to get to know me in the first place?"
"Because I want to."
"And what could the big-bad-Alpha, want from the small-fragile-human? What could you possibly gain from getting to know me?"
"Why must I have something gain for me to want to know you?
"You're dodging the question. Why do you want to know me?"
I huff at that. You've been dodging my questions all-day
"I have my reasons."
"See. Thought so. But I have nothing to offer. So, stop bothering me and stop wasting your time."
"You could never wast my time."
"How so?"
Shit. Did I say that aloud?
'Yes.'
Shit
'Tell her.'
'Fuck off!'
'Can' t. '
'Then shut up.'
"You just can't."
She just sits there studying for a moment. "If that's all you wanted to discuss. I'm going to go now." getting up and walking off.
"Sit back down. I'm not done yet. You just distract me."
Stopping, she turns around. Standing there, she looks at me. Sighing, she sits back down.
"What exactly made you think that going to the shops alone was a good idea?"
"Chris was asleep, I needed coffee." shrugging her shoulders.
"But you know it's dangerous. Almost everyone wants to harm you. They could have killed you." fighting the urge to shout at her.
"I don't care." she states so calmly it irritates me.
"Why?"
"I just don't. If they manage to kill me so be it." taking a sip of her coffee.
"How can you say that?"
"I really don't need to explain my self to you." taking another sip of her coffee.
"Yes. You do."
"No. I don't." She stats with a blank look.
" So, what. You would just let them kill you."
"No. I seem to be incapable of doing that." She stakes calmly, yet again. Looking off into the distance. Almost as if she didn't want it to be.
I can't help but stare at her. What the fack happened to her? How will I ever get her, to open up to me?
'You could always tell her?'
'Yea, like that's going to help with anything.'
'How would you know if you don't try.'
'Im not fucking stupid.' Blocking him out.
"Shayla?"
She doesn't respond. She's still locking out into space.
"Sheyla, are you ok?"
She still doesn't respond. So, I move closer. A tear rolls down her cheek.
"Shayla?" Reaching my hand out to her.
"Don't touch me." Moving away from me and wiping the single tear from her face.
I sit back down in my original spot.
This angers me slightly. Every time I'm close to her. She moves away. Every time I go to comfort her, she tells me not to
" Why do you keep doing that?"
" What?" a confused look taking place on her face.
"All I wanted to do was put my hand on your shoulder. All I wanted to do was to make sure you were ok."
"Well, I'm OK."
"Why?"
"I just don't like being touched by people I don't know. I've always been like that. nothing personal."
"Why?"
"I don't know. I just don't like it." a little frustrated.
You just like making things harder for me Shayla.
Sighing, I run a hand through my hair. Calming my self down.
"Why do you care?"
"Every time you move away from me. It makes me think that you're afraid of me."
"You're odd. I'm not afraid of you. I probably should be. But I'm not.
"Thank you."
"Why does it concern you? Aren't Alpha's normally feared?"
"Normally, yes. "
She just tells her head at me. And again I just sit here watching her. We stary like this for a moment.
My head shifts in the direction of the door; hearing someone closing the door. Chris comes walking down the passageway and past us.
"Hi Alx." He greets me taking a few more steps, before stepping. After standing still for a moment, he walks backwards. His eyes dart between us.
"Um….. Why are you here alone with My sister?" giving me questioned look.
"I took her to her check-up." "Bothering me." we both answers at the same time.
So I'm still bothering her, am I?
Rubbing my eyes, I sit up straight.
"Hey, Chris."
