Ch. 12

Alx’s P.O.V.
Here I am standing at Chris door, contemplating; should I go in or just leave them alone. Let them catch up. No, I need to go in. See if they’re ok. Normally I would just walk in. But it’s locked for Shayla’s safety no doubt. Good. My mate’s safety is paramount. Chris will make sure no harm comes to her; I know that. If I wasn’t confident that I would have made her move in with me. Meaning that I would have had to explain everything to the both of them.
‘She should move in with us. That’s where she belongs.’
‘Just shut up.’
‘I know that you want her to. You can’t deny that.’
‘I’m not. We just need to give her some time. Let her get through whatever she’s going through. In the meantime, all we can do is find out more about her. Ok. Just have a little patience.’
Finally, I ring the doorbell. The button stays in the pressed down position for a moment, probably because it hasn’t been used for so long.
“I’ll get it.” I hear Shayla shout out from the inside. I would love to be greeted by her.
“Sit back down.” Chris telling her off. I frown. But it’s probably best that we don’t encourage her to open the door. It’s not like she knew who was behind it.
The door opens with Chris’ tiered face pocking out from the house. He just stands there leaning on the door as if it’s the only thing stopping him from falling back to sleep.
“Hi?” he asks slightly confused as to why I’m here.
“You haven’t been showing up to your duties. And you didn’t answer me when I called.” I answer his unasked question. I am a little concerned about him. As my beta, he has never not shown up for his duties. He’s never even been late.
“Shit. Sorry.” He replies rubbing his eyes.
“Yea. He only just got up. The sleepyhead.” Shayla shouts from the living room.
I tilt my head at her words. Why would she say that? He’s been struggling to sleep ever since she got here.
“She doesn’t know. Don’t tell her. If she finds out that I haven’t been sleeping because of her. She won’t like herself very much.” He whispers, opening the door wider so that I could come in.
I frown before walking inside. ‘She won’t like herself very much’. Him not sleeping means that he cares for her. He has many reasons to worry for her. I would be angered if he didn’t lose sleep like I’ve lost sleep (not that anyone knows or notices). A brother caring for his sister is a good thing. Why would she not like herself?
‘I’m getting the impression that she doesn’t like being fused over. Something that we’ll have to change.’
‘Now there I agree with you.’
“Just give me a sec and I’ll be right with you.” Chris says while walking back into the lounge. Stopping to mess up Shayla’s hair.
“Watch it!” Shayla snaps at him.
Chris just laughs as he continues walking to his room.
She just snapped at him. She knows what he is, yet she still snapped at him. She has no fear of us at all. None whatsoever.
‘But that’s a good thing. We don’t want her to fear us.’
‘No, we don’t.’
Laughing as I sit down opposite her. I would really like to sit next to her. But she still sees me as a stranger so, I’ll sit here. She raises her eyebrow at me, a bothered look still placed on her face.
“Hi…..” she trails off not knowing what to call me. Shaking it off before speaking again. “Please do tell me what’s funny.”
Yep definite not scared that’s for sure.
“You can call me Alx if you want.” I said with a smile. Both avoiding her question and informing her that she doesn’t need to be that formal with me.
She gives me a very confused look, scanning me from head to toe.
“Na, I’ve been told not to. So, I rather not lose my head.” She stats plainly, leaning back into the chair. Again, on fear. How can one say such a thing, without even the slightest hint of fear? She knows that can happen to her but isn’t at all concerned.
“How are you never scared? Shayla?”
She gives me a confused frown.
“I have never once sensed any fear from you. Never.”
“You can actually sense fear?” she asks curiously.
I nod my head.
“I thought that was just a myth. Can you sense other emotions?” she asks curiously again, leaning toward me.
“Yes, if they’re strong enough.”
If I’m not mistaken, her eyes widened for a brief moment. A very brief moment.
“Do you sense anything from me?” she asks with a plain face.
“No, nothing most of the time. You seem to be good at hiding your emotions. Now please answer my question.”
“Sorry, what was it again?” she asks leaning back into the chair.
“How are you never scared?” I easily repeat the question.
“Fear is hardly ever useful to one’s self.”
“But still you don’t fear us at all. That’s a bit strange.”
“You are a person. You have a brain and a soul, if not two. Just because you’re stronger. And faster. And can somehow transform into a wolf. Doesn’t mean that I should treat you differently.” She states leaning her head on her hand. I love how her blue eyes never look at the floor when she talks to me. She always has eye contact when talking to me. I could get lost in her eyes. No. Stop it. Stop getting distracted. This is a serious matter.
“How can you say that? I can kill you. Not that I ever would. But I and most of this town can kill you.”
“Yea, so? A human can kill me too. A lot of things can kill me.” She goes quiet drifting off into space. I can feel the sadness coming from her. Swallowing what I believe to be the log in her throat, she returns herself to reality.
“If one removes everything that can kill them from their life, or if one removes themselves from everything that can kill them. Either way, that person would not have a life. Yes, they would be alive and probably live a long time. But it would empty. They would be dead without ever dying.” Said with a plain face like everything is normal. She just sits there looking at me; waiting for some sort of reply or comment. But I’m unable to say anything.
Chris re-enters the room, snapping me back to my senses.
