Chapter Eighteen
My head was pounding from the night before. Rochelle was so out of it, Nick had to carry her to mine, Coach somewhat managed but crashed on the couch with Rochelle. Good thing it was a pull out couch.
Nick shook me lightly. "I think I'm gonna have a bed day." He sniggered. Nick got almost completely hammered from shots and too many beers. All I could remember was how much cash we all spent.
"Same. I might go out, grab us breakfast." I swung my legs around and headed into the bathroom. My head was pounding, and I felt dizzy. Into the shower I went, cleaned up and got dressed.
"Nick! Ellis," I walked out of the bathroom, fresh clothes. Coach stood giggling. "What the hell happened last night?" He sniggered.
"We got wrote off. You barely managed to walk here and rochelle was getting carried by a stumbling Nick." I laughed back. Coach smiled but put his finger to his lips.
"Ro is still asleep." I giggled.
Nick walked out of the bedroom, looking like pure shit. "Get us breakfast babe, here." He handed me some money and I made my way to a diner nearby.
Nicks POV:
I made coffee as Ellis headed out. What a bloody night. Coach rubbed his temples and sighed.
"For a man my age, I should not have got drunk like that."
"Ah c'mon now Coach, you're only forty? I'm guessing."
"Forty four boy, I haven't drank like that since I was twenty."
"What the hell?" Rochelle got up very slowly.
"Morning to ya." Nick smiled.
"Never. Ever. Getting that pissed again." She laughed lightly, rubbing the temples on her head.
"Ellis went out and got us breakfast, he should be home shortly."
I looked at the clock. Twenty-five minutes since he left, I thought. Hopefully he wouldn't be long until he was home.
AN HOUR LATER.
"Do ya'll know where Ellis is?"
Rochelle looked at me with a puzzled look. For ages, I couldn't stop thinking about what was taking him so long. I'd rang his phone, but no answer.
Just as my phone started ringing, I lifted it as quick as possible.
"Hello?"
"Hiya, is this Nick?"
"Yes? Who's asking?"
"Ellis was involved in a car crash. He's quite hurt and we'd like you to come in."
I dropped the phone before hanging up and put my shoes on. To describe how I was feeling, I was quick and fast paced.
"Ellis is at the hospital. We need to go."
Rochelle and Coach hurried up and we rushed to the hospital. I sobbed quietly as Coach was racing down the highway.
I could see Mercy West close by as we took a right turn.
We made it and I ran in. "Excuse me?" I said with a panicked voice.
"There should be someone here called Ellis."
"Take a left, go straight and take the second right."
I rushed off as Ro and Coach chased after me.
Ellis stood up and then sat back down in pain.
"Oh my god." I held him close. I didn't want to let him go. His face was brusied and blood was covering his yellow shirt.
"I'm fine guys." He muttered and sobbed. My head was a complete mess. How the hell did it happen?
"Come here." I held him against me. He looked heartbroken as Ro and Coach went and grabbed us coffees.
"The girl who crashed into me, is dead. Nick. She was thirty-two weeks pregnant."
---
Everything slowed down. Ellis sat getting his arm bandaged and a few stitches on the right side of his head. I told Rochelle and Coach to take their cars home and that I'd see them another time.
A nurse with bright red hair and freckles came out. "Do you have any relation to her?"
The nurse asked.
"No." Ellis replied.
"Alright. We have no one to contact her family. She is a single parent and doesn't have any family out of state."
"And the baby?"
"Baby is well. Few weeks early but he is holding up well."
Ellis looked at me and left a puzzled look.
"What about the baby? Is the baby going to have a home?"
"For now, he'll stay in a unit to keep him safe and healthy. It could take a few months for adoption so we plan on bringing him to an adoption home once he hits a healthier system."
"I'd like to see him." I smiled. Ellis had a happy look on his face.
"Come this way."
We went to the unit and saw him. He looked beyond peaceful. He looked healthy. My heart broke for the child. His mother, gone before he could see her. Ellis' eyes were glossy. So were mine.
"Baby, he'll find a nice home."
"He will."
Ellis was more than upset leaving the hospital. The rain was heavy as hell and felt like needles through your skin.
"I hope he gets a good home. He deserves it." I said on the way back to our apartment. I was extremely hungover and my eyes felt were pulling weight.
Ellis looked sad.
"Let's go to the diner today. We'll get breakfast there."
"Alright."
We stopped at a red light and I kissed his hand that was resting on my lap. He had three gashes on his arm and four stitches on his head.
"Want to grab some paracetamol for the pain?"
"It's not too sore."
"Alright." I smiled.
His eyes looked glassy as we sat at the diner table awaiting eggs, bacon, pancakes and maple syrup.
"I want to go back to the woods. I wanna take our truck down there, stay there for a few days and head into the little town again. People were so nice there."
"If I can get in contact with Bill, I can rent it out again? I know how much you loved it, and I'll be able to stay."
Ellis' POV:
I loved the woods and the little wooden home. The massive, circle window gave a great view into the forest. It was also spring, and the trees would look amazing.
"I'd love that."
We got served our food and Nick looked worried.
"What's wrong?"
"I just- nothing."
"Tell me!" I kicked his foot playfully.
"Okay, there is a surprise at home."
"Really?" My thoughts rushed everywhere. I was filled with excitement curiosity.
"Blu is waiting with it."
"Hmm."
"No guessing." Nick smiled.
"Fine." My face dropped. It took my mind off things. My heart still felt like it was sitting in my stomach. The mother was on her phone, crashed into me and died. I felt like I was going to cry again.
I choked back the tears without Nick noticing. The baby, was all I could think about and how it would live its life with no mother, or father.
After food I wanted to be home. In my comfort and filled with love. I had many, many horrible and vigorous thoughts but the surprise at home made it a little better.
