the fall
"What time is it?" Newt asks, out of breath from running all day.
"I don't know my watch broke," I reply.
"I don't think we're gonna make it," Newt says.
"We'll make it, we just have to keep running," I say, determined to make it back before the doors close.
We're no more than two turns away when we hear the doors starting to close.
"Hurry up!" I shout.
We finally reach the corridor to the glade, but only a sliver of the door is still open, a few of our friends faces still visible.
Newt stops, but I keep running towards the door. I frantically search for an opening, in disbelief that they shut.
"Y/n they closed," Newt whispers.
"No, there has to be a way back in," I say, still looking for a way out of the maze.
"Y/n, stop. You can't get back in," Newt says, a little louder this time.
"No, I can find it," I say, not giving up even though I know it's not going to work.
"Y/n..."
"No."
"Y/n, please..."
"No!"
"Y/n! Stop it! We're trapped in the maze and there's nothing you can do about it!" He shouts, so loud the other gladers can probably hear it.
I crumble to the maze floor and lean my back on the closed doors, curling into a ball.
This isn't real. This can't be happening.
Tears start to fall down my cheeks.
"Y/n..." Newt says, sitting next to me.
"There's no way we'll survive." I state, coming to my senses.
"I doubt it."
"Okay. What's the plan?"
"Well, we could try to survive the night and risk being killed by grievers. Or..." he trails off.
"Or what?" I ask, knowing exactly what he's about to suggest.
"We go out on our own terms."
I don't say anything. I know what I'm gonna do, but I'm not ready to commit to it yet.
"Y/n, it's the only way we can have a say in this. It's the only way the bloody bastards who put us in here can't win."
"Okay," I say, so quiet he has a hard time hearing me.
"Are you sure?" He asks.
"I'm sure." My words are still barely audible.
"I think we should jump," he says quite quickly, as if he's put some thought into this.
"What?"
"Jump. Off the wall."
"Won't that hurt?" I ask, starting to rethink my decision.
"Not for long."
"Okay. How do we get up there?"
"We'll have to climb the vines."
"All the way to the top?"
"No, halfway'll do."
"Are you sure about this?"
"Yes. Now come on, we gotta hurry before a griever gets us."
Newt starts to climb first, leading the way. I try to follow his path, but it proves harder than I expected.
"How are you doing this so quickly?"
"It's kind of a long story..."
"It's not like I'm going anywhere."
He hesitates before saying, "I've climbed the wall before."
I stop as he reaches a small ledge about halfway up the wall. "What? Why?"
"No reason," he says, not giving up his secret.
"Okay..." I say, finally reaching him.
"This isn't far enough. We need to go higher," Newt says before grabbing onto the vines again.
I peek my head out over the ledge. "Um... this seems plenty high to me."
"Just trust me, alright?" He sounds a bit angry.
We manage to reach the top of the wall. It's wide enough for us both to sit down and hang our feet over. We can even see parts of the glade.
"So, are we gonna do this?" I ask.
"I'm ready. Are you?"
I pause, really thinking about what this means, not just for us, but for our friends too.
"What happens when the gladers find us tomorrow?"
"The same as what would happen if we had met some grievers, we just made their job a little easier."
"Won't they be upset that we didn't even try?"
"I think they'll understand. None of us have been able to make a real decision since we were put in here."
"How are you so sure about this?"
"I'm not," he says, turning away.
"Newt, come on."
"Okay... the reason I climbed the wall before was for the same reason. I was gonna bloody jump! I could never actually do it though. I would climb part of the way up, some days higher than others, and then I would just climb back down and return to the glade. No one ever knew."
"Newt... I'm so sorry. Are you sure you want to do this? Is this because of your past or because we're stuck out here?"
"A little of both. I've been so happy lately, ever since you came up. I thought after I was somewhat better I wouldn't even have to face a situation like this, but I guess you can't escape it."
"Do you really want to do this?"
"Yes."
"Really?"
In the distance we hear the clicking and whirring of a griever.
"Yes, I'm positive, this is how I want to go out," he sounds so sure.
"Okay, let's do it."
Newt holds his hand out and I take it, he looks down, as if he's about to go, but he stops.
One of the grievers spikes scrapes against a nearby corridor.
"I need to thank you. You made this place bearable. I can never express how much I appreciate that."
"No, Newt, thank you. This was such a nightmare when it all started, but you guided me through it," I manage to choke out through my tears.
Newt squeezes my hand, tears beginning to form in his eyes. "Ready?"
"Let's do this."
Just as we see the griever round the corner, we both let go of the wall.
