Chapter 17 - Metaphorical

"I'll be fine, Taehyung. You go and make sure Namjoon behaves himself."

Jimin smiled at the younger boy and reached his arm up to ruffle his clean hair.

Taehyung had been discharged from the hospital and was saying a quick goodbye to Jimin, even though he didn't really want to leave the paralysed boy alone.

"I will visit." He promised the older with a soft smile. "Take good care of yourself."

Jimin held out his hand to shake Taehyung's. The younger looked down at the ex-idol's fingers and sighed.

He knew this would be the last time he saw this man in a long time.

Shaking his hand, Jimin looked up into his eyes and smiled.

"I have a gift for you."

He reached into his hospital gown and produced a small box wrapped in light blue paper with a navy bow. The smile that spread over Tae's face was one he wanted to remember forever.

Jimin handed Tae the box, who carefully peeled off the wrapping paper and placed it on the table next to them. His eyes widened like a deer in headlights.

"I... I can't accept this Jimin... This must have cost a fortune!"

Respectfully, he tried to give the iPhone box back, but the older refused.

"It was nothing Taehyung. You saved my life! This was the least I could do! I have already saved my number onto it, and I made sure that Jungkook's is on there too. You can charge it at cafes, and use the WiFi from the library. I installed some games for you too! If you ask Jungkook or Hoseok, I'm sure they can help you a little more."

Tae stared at Jimin. It was like he was speaking a different language!

WiFi? Charge?

Did he have to run at the phone? Why would he have to charge at it? And WiFi? Was that like Sci-Fi?

He knew he was going to have to have a word with Jungkook.

Bowing 90 degrees, he thanked Jimin profusely for the expensive gift, but his friend just laughed.

"You don't have to be so formal around me." The older smiled. "No go on - Namjoon needs to get to work. Tell Jungkook I am going to Facetime you at lunchtime so make sure to go to the library so you have WiFi."

Tae thanked him again and bid him farewell before meeting Namjoon outside the hospital.

"Ready to go?"

Tae nodded and they began to walk.

Namjoon had managed to secure a new job at a take-away that had just opened up at the end of the street, and had decided to take Taehyung with him. The younger boy had been told by the hospital to rest, and Namjoon knew that if he left him at home, Tae would run away - probably to go and see Hoseok at work.

They met up with Jungkook on the way, who had been walking to his new job. One condition of him living with Tae and Namjoon at the den, was that he leave his pick-pocketing life behind, and get a real job.

It had been hard, but he had managed to get a temporary job helping one of the women on the market stalls. She was one of the few people who sold soft tofu, so the stand was more than popular, and he was paid well.

"Don't make Tae go to the take away. It's too far. He should rest." Jungkook pleaded to the other. "I'll take him to the market. He can sit on the stall and chat to me a bit. Also, Jimin said that I may have to give him a short iPhone tutorial."

Grumbling softly, Namjoon agreed, and let the two teenagers leave together.

He still couldn't believe how strong both of them were. Teens like them should have been at home playing video games and eating candy...

One day, he promised. One day he would get enough money to give them all that life.

Jungkook and Tae arrived at the market stall and the woman greeted them both happily, glad for the extra company. She set up a stool for Taehyung to sit on and smiled, leaving Jungkook to watch over him and the stall while she went to advertise the stall.

Tae chuckled at Jungkook's politeness towards the customers. He was NEVER this polite to people! Not even him!

When there was an eventual lull in sales, Jungkook sat down next to Tae and began to show him what Jimin had been talking about.

"Oh! That is what he meant by 'Charging'!" Tae laughed. "I thought he wanted me to run or something!"

Jungkook laughed and continued his explanation.

Just then, the screen changed - Jimin was calling!

They talked for a short time, before the WiFi failed and the call was cut.

Tae would never admit it, but he was getting sleepy. His body was still sore, and he could have done with more sleep...

Soon, the blue day began to turn into a soft evening, then dark night. The lady packed up her stall with Jungkook's help and the boys were dismissed.

They walked home in the dark, using the streetlights to guide them. When they got back to the den, Tae smiled.

Home.

He breathed in the musky scent of the area and went in, spotting Namjoon, who must have only been back a few minutes. He smelt like frying and chicken, and was placing a few won notes in his box.

"You're back." He smiled. "I hope you didn't work Kim Taehyung."

"Didn't lift a finger." He confirmed.

Jungkook sat down in one corner. This would be his first night with his new friends.

They all laid down on the newspaper, huddling close for warmth. It was still January, and a frost was already settling over the streets of Ilsan.

Despite the cold and despite the damp, Taehyung, Namjoon and Jungkook couldn't have been happier. They were home.

"Taehyung?"

The boy looked over at Namjoon, who had called him.

"Yes?"

"I just wanted to say that... I'm proud of you."

Silence...

"Of me?"

"For saving Jimin." Namjoon explained softly. "That was...really brave. Stupid - but brave."

Taehyung felt a smile spread over his face. He was so happy he had the ability to make someone proud.

"Thank you, Hyung-nim" he grinned, biting his lip.

"I don't think Jimin will be forgetting a kid like you any time soon." Jungkook smiled, "Honestly... how did a homeless guy make friends with an idol?"

Taehyung chuckled and looked up at the stars.

"Who knows, Kookie?" He sighed happily. "Who knows?"
