**First year**

Hufflepuff. That guy was definitely a Hufflepuff.

Crutchie blinked. "You gonna take it?"

Davey nodded and took the Chocolate Frog from his hands, heating up from embarrassment. How did he forget his money? "Thank you,"

"No worries!" Crutchies face broke out into a grin.

The grin was contagious. Davey grinned back despite himself.

"So, what house you think you're gonna be in?..."

Crutchies face fell. "Slytherin."

Davey raised an eyebrow. "What?"

"My dad wants me to be in it. My mum was one. She was amazing, not like the other ones,"

✨Genetics.✨

"And my dad didn't go to Hogwarts. He went to another wizarding school. My grandparents forced my parents to be married. He loved her though. And she loved him back."

Crutchies stopped in realisation that he was telling his backstory to a guy he knew for three hours.

"I don't know why I'm telling you this- I'm sorry-"

Davey shook his head. "No its ok! You can tell me- only if you want to of course-"

Crutchie nodded again and stayed silent for a minute. "She died last year, and my dad..."

Davey felt instant regret.

"My dads fine. He just wants me to get into Slytherin like my mother." he was clearly lying, but Davey didn't say anything about it. He didn't want to force people to tell him personal stuff.

"I'm sorry."

Crutchie shrugged, giving him a small smile. "No, its ok."

"Would it be ok if I hug you?"

Crutchies smile grew a little. "Yeah. That might be nice."

Davey shifted over and lightly wrapped his arms around the significantly smaller boy, rubbing his back and not knowing what to say.

They stayed like that for a few minutes in silence.

Davey slowly pulled away. "If you do get into Slytherin I'll still be your friend. I'll be your friend even if you get kicked out of Hogwarts."

Crutchie sniffled. "What about your reputation?"

"Both my parents are muggles. They don't care what house I get into as long as I'm a good roll model and get good grades."

"Thanks, Davey..."

"No problem, really. I want to be your friend."

Crutchie leaned into his arms again, his sniffling slowing down.

----

"Are you sure you don't want your leg sorted out by Madame Pomfrey?" Davey questioned as he watched his friend struggle up the stairs.

"Absoloutely! I was born like this, I'm not gonna change it. Plus, it shows a sign of weakness, I'm not gonna let it get in my way."

Davey sighed, mostly out of admiration. "Alright. Let me at least help you?"

Crutchie shook his head defiantly. "No. I got this." he went up a step. "Thanks though!"

Davey slowed his pace so he could be next to him. "Whatever you say. Hey, what did your dad say about you being in Hufflepuff?"

Crutchie looked at the ground to hide his expression and stayed silent.

"He doesn't know." he answered truthfully when they reached the top of the stairs.

Davey nodded and patted his shoulder. "I understand."

"....We should get to Charms."

----

"Neville."

Davey looked up from his book. "What about Neville?"

"He looks like you."

Davey looked at the third one in the group and chuckled, looking back at his book. "I guess you do,"

"I'm not as smart as you, you're a Ravenclaw for goodness' sake. I'm not brave enough for Gryffindor either." Neville replied bluntly.

"Malfoy?" Crutchie asked knowingly.

Neville nodded.

"That sucks. He doesn't talk to anyone other than Slytherins and Gryffindors. We can't talk sense into him."

"You're a Gryffindor, Nev." Davey had shut his book to look at him encouragingly.

"I shouldn't be."

"The sorting hat is never wrong."

Crutchie nodded in agreement, trying to cheer his friend up.

"I don't feel like one at least. I don't fit in with them." Neville said after a minute.

"Don't worry, you got us!" Crutchie ruffled his hair.

"Plus, you are smart. Look at you in Herbology!" Davey smiled.

Neville bit his lip. "Thank you..."

"You're welcome, we're only telling you the truth."

----

"Morning..."

"Crutchie?"

"Thank goodness you're okay!"

"What happened?"

"You got suffocated by that thing.... The uh... Its called the... The Devils Snare."

Davey blinked as he recollected what happened hours before.

"Oh. I was being stupid."

"... Yes. You were."

Davey chuckled and sat up. "Probably shouldn't do that again."

Crutchie clambered next to him and hugged him, tight but not too tight. "Don't. You scared the life out of me."

**third year**

"GET OFF ME!" Crutchies voice was laced with fright, and he hated it.

Davey heard a smack before his eyes could process it. What could he do? He looked around. If he acted, Crutchie would get into deeper trouble. But he couldn't just stand there.

"That's your son." Davey found himself speaking. His voice shook, he didn't know whether it was with fear or rage. "That is your son, your faultless son."

Crutchies dad turned on Davey, who didn't dare back away.

"DAD, NO!" Crutchie was hit with a blow to the stomach.

"Shut the hell up, f*g!"

Daveys eyes widened. His breath hitched and his face contorted. Before he could stop himself, he punched the man as hard as he could. "YOU B*TCH!"

Crutchies dad spun around, grabbing a glass out of anger, and smashing it on Daveys head, without thinking.

Crutchie screamed. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! DAD, PLEASE!"

He had no regret. "I'm not your dad. You're not my son."

Crutchie stared at Davey, now on the ground. "I don't care. Why did you do that to him?! WHY ARE YOU LIKE THIS?!"

The man grabbed Crutchies wrist, but he kicked him hard in the shins, then shoved his crutch into his stomach.

Neighbours were woken up by the sound of breaking glass and the yells. They called the police with worry.

Crutchies dad held him by the neck. He was clearly too drunk. "Do that again."

Crutchie did. Until it turned into flailing. His vision became blurry until he blacked out.

----

"How's your head?"

"Only thirteen."

The two were still in hospital.

"Davey, don't worry about me."

"You're only thirteen."

"David Will Jacobs."

"Charlie Finn Mor-"

There was a heartbroken silence.

"Jacobs. Charlie Finn Jacobs." Davey looked a bit weaker.

"What?"

"Im gonna marry you someday. Someday you'll be safe. Someday you'll be Charlie Finn Jacobs." he was definitely going to black out again.

It was too much. Crutchie started crying again. "Davey..."

"I love you. I won't let anything bad happen to you ever again."

"Davey-"

Davey took a breath but didn't get to say other sentence. His head fell back onto to pillows and Crutchie cried more.

"I love you too."

And soon he was out as well.

When they both woke up, they didn't remember a word of what was said the night before.

**fourth year**

"Usually, I find it useful to just tell them."

"Its not that easy, Luna."

"Are you afraid of judgement?"

Crutchie opened his mouth but closed it again. He hasn't really thought about it. "From Davey or others?"

"Im sure Davey won't judge you. He's a good soul. Those are hard to find. Keep him close, I suggest."

Crutchie blinked. "Im guessing others, then."

Now that he thought about it, it did make sense. People would most likely avoid them or look down upon them for dating. Two guys? (CHILLIN IN A HOT TUB) Dating? Nothing was wrong with it in his eyes. Clearly not Lunas or Nevilles either. And Daveys. He came out to Crutchies in second year. He was a bundle of nerves and a tearful mess when Crutchie told him he liked every gender and still loved him.

"Crutchie, Davey loves you a lot. He most likely won't say no, and if he does he'll still want to be friends with you. Ask him to the Yule Ball, because whats worse? Rejection, or missing out in a once in a lifetime event?"

Crutchie stuttered. For a girl so out there, Luna was very wise. "Thank you, Luna."

He hugged her and was about to leave.

"Oh! Luna!"

He reached into his watched and pulled out eccentric shoes covered in mud. "I found your shoes buried beside the whomping willow-"

"Oh! Thank you, Crutchie! How on Earth did you not get hit?"

Crutchie thought of the time Davey tought him Immobulus, despite himself being Pureblood and him being a muggle. "Spells and stuff."

Luna embraced him in a genuine hug as he smiled at her. "Thank you!"

He returned the hug. "No problem, Luna."

----

"Im scared."

Neville looked at Davey, then Crutchie, who was at the other side of the room. "Why?"

"Because this world has magic." he began walking down the stairs. "And I don't give a damn what they do to me, what if they hurt Crutchie for this?"

"They wont, hes got us!"

In honesty, Crutchie was actually stronger than Neville, Luna and Davey. So that didn't assure him. But he wasn't going to tell Neville that. "...Thanks."

"You're welcome."

Davey walked over to Crutchie. "Cute."

Crutchie chuckled. "Not too bad yourself." he looked up and down his date. "Actually, really hot."

Davey blushed and took his hand. "Care for a dance?" he blinked and looked annoyed at himself. "I can't dance."

Crutchie laughed. "Awwh! That's adorable!"

"Okay. Wow."

"Ive got the best boyfriend ever!"

Davey blinked and Crutchies smile slipped off his face in an instant as he realised what he had said.

"Boyfriend?"

Crutchie turned bright red. "I don't know what I was thinking..."

"Crutchie,"

"Im sorry."

"Crutchie,"

"It just slipped out!"

"Charlie Finn Jacobs!"

They stared at each other, memory faintly flooding back to them. Both were shocked and quiet for quite some time.

"That night..."

"That night..."

"Did you really mean it?"

Davey looked him in the eye. "Charlie Finn Jacobs," he said, putting emphasis on the Jacobs. "I meant every word of it."

Crutchie threw himself onto Davey, kissing him passionately. He didn't care what people thought anymore. He didn't care of what could happen to him, he didn't care that people could judge or torment him. All he cared about right now was that Davey was kissing him back and they had both found happiness. He clung onto him, almost letting go of his crutch.

Luna smiled airily and clapped.

Yes, clapped.

Harry and Ron grinned, while Neville smiled at them supportively.

They broke the kids for air.

"Damn oxygen." Crutchie said before another kiss, completely forgetting his surrounding.

Davey laughed and kissed back, never wanting to stop.

He was dating Charlie Finn Jacobs.

**fifth year**

Dean and Seamus waved at them, hand in hand.

Hogwarts was supportive, to the relief of the two. They didn't need to have the fear of being judged or beaten for who they are.

"I missed you." Davey kissed his cheek.

"I missed you too." Crutchie lay his head on Daveys shoulder.

"I'm happy to know your holidays were good, though."

Crutchie had been adopted by two mums ever since that night. Neither of them talk about it anymore.

Crutchie smiled. "I loved your letters."

"I loved your replies."

"Why are we stalling?"

Davey wrapped his arms around Crutchie and kissed him multiple times.

Crutchie smiled, tangling his fingers into his dark hair and kissing back.

----

Crutchie stormed into Daveys dorm. Davey followed him, a bit red in the face from trying to keep up. "I hate her!"

"Calm down."

"She's a total b*tch!"

"Yes, but-"

"I can't believe her! Detention! For not being straight!"

"Umbridge-"

"Should burn in hell!"

"Cray, honey!"

Crutchie calmed down. "Don't say you don't agree."

"I do, but we can't get into deeper trouble. You don't know what she could do to us."

Crutchie huffed. His boyfriend was usually right.

"Fine."

Davey smiled and kissed the side of his head. "Good."

----

Crutchie was fuming. "SHE DIDN'T! SHE CANT! THIS CANT BE ALLOWED-"

"I'm fine, I swear, but-"

"BUT WHAT?! DAVEY, LOVE, LOOK WHAT SHE DID TO YOU!"

Davey looked at the writing on his hand in his own blood. He chuckled dryly. "Pathetic of her, really."

"I must not be gay" did seem pathetic of her, but Crutchie wasn't going to admit that right now.

Crutchie took his hand and ran his thumb over the scar. "She can't do this..."

"She can't do it to you. Maybe we could make polyjuice so I can go again, but as you,"

"I won't let you, ever! Plus, that won't work. She'll keep me there for a full hour. And polyjuice lasts for only one hour. Walking to her office takes five minutes. You'd change back in front of her."

Davey sighed, defeated.

Crutchie lifted his chin. "Hey, she won't last long."

Davey hesitantly tried to kiss him but Crutchie put a finger over his lips. "I love you, but its not worth the risk. At least not right now."

----

"Breaking up?"

"I don't want to! I really, really don't want to, Charl, please know that. I love you more than anyone on this planet."

"She'd get her way!"

"And sometimes we gotta let her. At least for now."

Crutchies heart broke. "Day...."

"Its not permanent. I swear, I said id marry you, and I will. Its just till she's gone."

"Jaco, why?"

"She used the cruciatus curse on you!" Davey shuddered as he still heard his boyfriends screams ringing in his ears. He couldn't get it out of his head. "You know that's illegal, right?!"

Crutchie stayed quiet.

"I love you too much for anything bad to happen to you again."

Still quiet.

"We will get back together again. The second she's gone."

Crutchie nodded.

"Promise me one thing."

"Anything."

"You'll keep on loving me back, even when we're broken up."

"Davey, I can't stop loving you. That's the problem."

They shared a trembly kiss, not knowing when they could do it again.

----

"Finally." Davey had finished packing and he turned to Crutchie.

Crutchie smiled sadly. The loss of Sirius was still hard to take in. But he had his boyfriend back.

Davey ran his thumb over his jawline. "Its weird... Life."

A few tears escaped Crutchies eyes and Davey dried them as the early morning sun began to creep onto them both.

"You finally think you're gonna be happy, but... It won't let you."

Davey finally kissed him. It was soft and gentle. Both had a sense of calm to them.

"Life is so weird, Charlie Finn Jacobs, but least ive got you."
