Abby walked down the semi-crowded street carrying her work load to the seamstress shop. Her long mahogany hair was held up by a strip if fabric. The deep brown eyes were focused on not tripping over anything more than paying attention to traffic. The young 15 year old kept on accidentally bumping into people and almost falling onto the street.
As she neared the seamstress shop, Abby heard someone trying to bargain for something.
"Come on boys, Ise swear! I didn't know that Race's tip wasn't good, youse should go beat him up! Not me!" A tall boy was being held up against the wall of a store by a shorter boy with a bowler hat with a red feather in it.
"Oh yeah, sure! Youse so didn't know about the false tip, why else would you tell us?!"
Abby was taken aback by the sarcasm that poured out of the shorter boy's mouth. A false tip wasn't THAT bad, sure you would've lost some money, but it was nothing to beat someone up over.
It made her blood boil seeing a shorter person picking on someone taller than them about something unnecessary. Deciding to help the taller boy, Abby placed her work load down, and entered the alley. "HEY!" She shouted, feeling her freckled cheeks grow warm from talking to a stranger, "Leave him alone!"
The shorter boy realised the taller one's shirt, "don't try ta run skits, when I'm done with this dame, I'm comin' forah ya." Then the shorter one turned to Abby. "Whadda ya want Dame?"
"I'll repeat, leave him alone." Abby's cheeks grew warmer. And she gripped the back of her skirt in her sweaty hands.
The boy cackled, "and if I don't?" He took a step toward the thin girl. Her eyes widened at how intimidating this tiny boy was.
"Just... Leave him alone." Abby's voice started to grow quieter, her earlier confidence all gone.
The boy took another step toward her and pushed her down into the cobblestone. "Go back to the Kitchen goil!"
"Hey Oscar!" The tall boy tapped the bully on the shoulder.
As soon as the bully, Oscar, turned around he got a fist in the face from the taller boy. Oscar fell back and landed next to Abby. The taller one kneeled down to the ground next to a dazed Oscar.
"Well, looks like you're the one who's all washed up." Just the the tall boy's teasing attitude changed. He picked Oscar up by his sirt collar and brought him mere inches from his face. "You don't treat a goil like dat Oscar. No wondah no goil will stay with ya long." He pushed Oscar back down onto the ground hard, making his neck snap down and hit the hard cobblestone. "Now beat it!" The Taller boy stood up and allowed Oscar to scramble away, still dazed from his head wounds.
When Oscar was safely away. The taller boy turned his attention to Abby. "Sorry, youse didn't need ta see dat side of me..." He outstretched his hand to Abby.
Abby's mind was racing, should she trust this really cute, yet slightly scary, boy who seemed to be as tall as her. Before she could make up her mind. Her arm moved for her and she took his hand.
"What's your name?" The boy asked her.
"Oh... Um... Abby. And yours?"
"Skittery. So... About the fight... Why'd you help me?"
"It just makes me mad when I see someone smaller picking on us taller people for no real reason."
Abby started to dust her skirt off, while Skittery went to go pick up her work load.
"Oh, Skittery, you don't have to help me." Abby went to go get her basket.
"No, I want to." He turned his back to her. "So, where do you work?"
She smiled at how gentleman gesture to walk her to the shop. "I... um... Work right across the street."
Skittery saw her dimples shine as she smiled at him, 'Damn, this girl is cute...' He thought. "So, lead the way."
