Blink-Request
"Sarah, can you see them?" I run my fingers through my blonde hair. "No, relax, Cassi, they are going to be fine."
I stand as tall as I can which isn't easy being 5'4", looking for my boys, my brothers amongst what must be a million people.
"There they are!" We make our way over to them, shoving a lot of people out of the way to get to them.
"Hey, oh thank goodness!" I hug my brother Dutchy and my best friends Mush, Race and Blink.
"What did you think we was hurt?" I laugh. "Yes!" We make our way through the crowd with Jack in the lead.
I wait with them, squeezing Dutchy's and Blink's hands tightly as Jack and David go in to talk to Pulitzer.
Everyone is shouting and yelling and making a lot of noise. I lean on Blink's shoulder.
The truth is, I like him. Like, a lot. Ever since Dutchy and I came to the newsies, I was in love with him.
"Blink, do you think we are going to win?" He looks at me with his one blue eye. "No. I know we are." I smile and squeeze his hand. I am nervous.
Jack and David come out and we all hold our breath. Jack says something to Les and puts him on his shoulders. We then hear the verdict. "We beat him!"
I shout and jump on my brother, holding him for dear life. Everyone who's in the square is cheering and celebrating. Denton comes up and we all hug him.
Suddenly, the cops show and we try to get Jack out, but Denton stops him. They stop and open up the back, and a bunch of boys who had been trapped in the refuge get out.
The last one is Crutchy. I hug him tight. He tells Jack and the rest of us how he got out. He points and when we all turn our heads, Teddy Roosevelt is standing there, shaking hands with the children.
Apparently, he has offered to take Jack anywhere. Jack asks to go to the train yards. The mood dims as we all know where he wants to go. Santa Fe.
We wave goodbye, and I can see Sarah and Les with tears in their eyes. Blink, Mush and I stand by the gates and watch him disappear. I get a thought.
"Try bottle alley or the harbor." I sing quietly. Race comes up. "Try Central Park its guaranteed. "Try any banker, bum or barber." Crutchy says and I smile, putting my arm around his shoulder.
Blink steps to his other side and sings. "They almost all knows how to read." We walk to where we usually buy our papes from Weasel, but hallelujah and thank the lord, he has been replaced.
Davey's up first. "100 papes." We grin and pat him on the back, but now we stop, shouts and cheers arising from the people. A carriage pulls up, and Jack of all people steps back out.
Smiles stretch across all of our faces as all the newsies flood to welcome him back.
He stops in front of David and says, "So, how's the headline today?" David smiles back. "Headlines don't sell papes, Newsies sell papes." We all laugh and they hug.
Sarah comes through the crowd and Jack reaches his arms out to her and they kiss. All the boys start to cheer, but my eyes are on Blink, who is laughing along with the rest of them.
I tap him on the shoulder. He turns around. "What is it Cassi?" I smile, my grey eyes piercing his blue one. "Our turn." He smiles, wraps his hands around my waist, and presses his lips softly to mine.
The boys turn towards us and start laughing again.
Ain't it a line life, carrying the banner through it all?
A/N I did this after my state testing, ur welcome! :)
