Lost at Dusk
Hey, Crimson_Graves here to review your work. Please note this is all based on my opinion. I'm not a professional writer, I've just had plenty of practice and read a lot of published books. By requesting this review, you give me permission to analyze your book and to voice my opinion.
Title: 10/10
I really like the title. It's simple and raises a bit of a mystery for your readers.
Cover: 7/10
Overall the cover looks well done. I like the feel to it and the coloring. The only thing that throws me off slightly is all the different fonts on the cover. The font for lost is a little too skinny and it blends in a bit. I think a thicker font would work there instead. The at dusk looks good though! Along with the title, although the title could be a little transparent if you were feeling a bit dangerous lol.
Summary: 6/10
The summary does have a nice, inviting hook to it, and it does summarize a few events.
But the opening sentences are a bit confusing to me. Maybe rearrange it to something like this.
Silver Kim moves to New York City with dreams of leaving her old life in Busan behind. Little does she know her whole world is about to flip upside down when she discovers she's an archangel. And better yet, that she's about to walk right into the palms of Lucifer.
Grammar/Spelling: 7/10
Overall, I found very few mistakes when reading. The chapters that I read flowed smoothly with the occasional bumps here and there, but nothing too distracting.
The thing that threw me the most was starting out in third, and then shifting over to first. I'm not against this style of writing, a recently published book, 4 Dead Queens did this and I loved it. I think it just throws me off here because I don't really see the reason for the shift. It's used in that book to hide the identity of the killer, and give a movie like feel to images the main characters sees. But in your work, I feel like you can go either way. Keep it in third or keep it in first.
And then the telling vs showing in chapter three. Your first two chapters did an excellent job at showing us things such as flight and feelings, but then chapter three just throws a bunch of background at us at once for Silver. While this info is good to know, I'm sure it can be introduced more naturally over the course of time and does not have to be disclosed all at once.
Those were my main issues when reading. The other minor things were easy fixes!
Plot: 4/10
The plot of the story confused me a bit at times. From what I got from the third chapter and the summary, Silver is moving from Busan to get away from her abusive father. There, she meets Nathan, another archangel. And Lucifer comes into play?
The plot sounds really fun!
The one thing that threw me off was the opening two chapters. I read them twice, and I think they seem to be a bit of a flash forward after she meets Nathan. I think you could cut them out, or leave one as a teaser and label it that. Because while they are written nicely, I found myself confused from the jump in chapter two to chapter three.
Characters: 5/10
Our two characters, Nathan and Silver, are both archangels.
Silver and her mother left Busan to get away from an abusive father. Silver was pushed off a building back in Busan and sprouted silver wings. Then one day at her new high school in New York, she meets Nathan, who has a similar scar to hers. It seems, according to the first two chapters, that Nathan is a fellow archangel also from Busan.
While it's a little early to judge too much about your characters, your MC seems to be lacking a bit of a voice. She tells us everything in that third chapter and it just makes me feel a bit distant from her. In first person, we should feel like we are in the MC's shoes. But instead, I feel like I'm watching her tell me about her life. Bring her to life by giving her a personality in her voice. Is she snarky? Shy? Happy? Angry at the world? Show us through her voice.
And Nathan feels low key stalkerish to me coming all the way from Busan.... and attending the same highschool lol! I have my eye on him.
Overall: 6.5/10
Your story itself is good. Going deeper into your main characters narrative, cutting out a lot of the telling, and cutting those first two chapters will help this story out a lot. Keep up the good work and thank you for letting me review your work.
