Chapter 8
(Shayla's POV)
I quickly wipe the water from my eyes, my hand barely leaving my face as I glance up at the sound of oncoming footsteps, to see Tennoji and his sister approaching. Tennoji finally sees me, and surprise registers on his face, before he narrows his eyes, studying me, as he reaches our table, stopping in front of it.
Yuko stops with him, bringing her chair to a stop, as Tennoji glances at Eiki, then back at me. "Hey Tennoji." Is all I manage to say, smiling slightly at him.
He frowns slightly, looking at Eiki again, while his sister looks slightly confused, but she smiles gently anyway. "Hey Red, Eiki. Didn't think I'd run into you here." He finally says, nodding at us.
"Oh you work together!" Yuko exclaims excitedly, smiling at me and Eiki, before looking to her brother.
"Yup! We're all apart of the same unit, but Shay here is Yutaka's new partner." Eiki mentions, grinning, as he gestures to me with his hand.
"Nice to meet you." I offer Yuko my hand, smiling at her.
"Oh so you're the new partner I've heard so much about." Yuko smirks, glancing at Tennoji, before taking my hand, shaking it. I glance at Tennoji, raising an eyebrow in question, before returning my attention back to Yuko.
"I can only imagine all the horrible things he says about me." I smirk, making Yuko laugh, as she shakes her head.
"Actually-" Yuko starts, but is cut off by her brother.
"Yea, well, what can I say Red, you're foul mouthed and got no manners. Wasn't gonna lie to my own sister about it." He grins, tilting his head to the side, the same lopsided grin that I had become accustomed to.
"Like you're such a catch. With your perfect manners and all, elevator boy." I scoff, rolling my eyes at him. Yuko stats giggling, drawing my attention to her.
"I like her." Yuko adds, still giggling, as she leans forward, patting me on the shoulder. "Take care of him, he has a tendency to over work himself." She adds, elbowing her brother, who smiles at her.
"Will do." I wink at her, smiling.
"Alright, well, time to get going, I'll see you at the station later Eiki. Later Red." Tennoji nods, as he starts walking towards the door, his sister following him.
"Well, that went well, except I think Tennoji thinks that I made you cry." Eiki laughs, shaking his head slightly.
"I doubt it. He didn't say anything." I shrugged, slurping down the last bit of my pop.
"He didn't have to, it was written on his face." Eiki scoffs, before getting up. "Anyway, you coming back to the station, or heading home?"
I stand up, pushing in my chair. "I'll come back to the station, not like I have anything else to do." I shrug, leaving with Eiki, as we head back towards work.
A short ten minute walk later, we reach the station, taking the elevator back upstairs, before finally making our way back to the second unit office. "Slaven, didn't expect to see you back in today." Kirisawa says upon seeing me, his usual cigarette dangling from his mouth.
"Miss us?" Kyobashi asks, amused, as he leans back in his chair, crossing his arms behind his head.
"Hardly." I snort, shaking my head at Kyobashi, before returning my attention back to Kirisawa. "I had enough of the day to myself, figured I'd come make myself useful."
"More of us work on it, faster we get these people off the streets." Hanai cuts in, smiling slightly.
I follow Eiki over to our usual seats, plopping down between him and Asano, before the door to our office opens once more, revealing Tennoji. "So you're joining us today too huh?" Kirisawa smiles, as Tennoji comes in. The red head glances my way, seemingly surprised to see me once again, his brows furrowing.
"Just wanted a half day anyways." He shrugs, taking his seat across from me. He glances at Eiki again, studying him, before looking to Kirisawa, who, before he can say anything, gets interrupted by the sound of the phone going off.
Kirisawa looks serious all of time sudden, grabbing a pen and a pad of paper, as he starts scribbling something on the paper quickly, saying "Uh huh" here and there, before finally thanking the person, before hanging up.
He takes a drag of his cigarette, looking around the room, before clearing his throat, attracting all our attention to him. "Remember Shane? The one Tennoji and Slaven picked up not too long ago? That was him, he overheard Ryu today at school, and it sounds like there's another group meeting tonight, this might be our chance." Kirisawa says seriously, and I feel myself relax slightly at his words. Maybe my records won't be needed after all.
I feel a hand squeeze my shoulder, a glance showing me it was Eiki, who gives me a reassuring smile, as he probably knows what I was thinking. I look back towards Kirisawa, though I notice Tennoji eyeing me and Eiki, before he looks towards Kirisawa as well.
"So when is it? Are we going to make an arrest this time, at least bring them in for questioning?" Hanai asks, and Kirisawa nods at the profiler.
"Tonight, at eight. Yes, we are going to bring them in for questioning. We suspect it's a terrorist or activist group, involving members from various gangs." Kirisawa answers, handing out packets to all of us, that have the info of the members they had identified. "Some of them are based from here, some of them are mafia, others are from small gangs originally based in New York, the U.S." He explains further, and I feel myself freeze at his words. I bite my lip, focusing extra hard on the packet of papers in front of me, as I flip the pages.
Unfamiliar faces on every page, varying from the yakuza, who I had heard of, to some I hadn't. Though when I almost make it all the way through the packet, my eyes land on a pair of familiar green eyes, and a face I knew well, and I just stop, staring at the page. I barely hear Kirisawa's voice in the background, going over the packet, as I get lost in my own thoughts.
The same dark cold room we were always lead into. Only one light in the entire room. I could feel eyes watching me through the same window where they watched us from, every time. I could feel the familiar weight of cold hard metal in my hands, given a gun once more.
They took us in, trained us. They also put us against each other. Only the strong survive, you learn by doing, fighting for survival. They would throw two of us into the room, for their own sick amusement, to see who would come out on top, who was stronger.
"Alright. Let's see who's stronger hm?" My adopted fathers cruel voice rang out, from the doorway. "Anythings allowed. Hell, kill each other if you want. Fight like your life depends on it."
I look up, my gaze meeting a pair of familiar green eyes, framed by shaggy, and messy chocolate brown hair. My hands start to shake at the sight of my friend, I didn't want to hurt him. His green eyes widen, as he realizes who he was thrown in to fight against.
We were both still teenagers, not yet adults. Both taking lives long before we should have, before we had even started truly living our own. He took a hesitant step forward, shaking his head in disbelief.
"I can't." He said softly, looking at me sadly.
I nodded in agreement, before tossing my gun aside, clattering as it scrapes across the floor. He mimicked me, tossing his gun aside as well.
"If you refuse, we'll beat the shit out of one of you, and you'll wish you were dead. We won't go easy on you."
The young boy my age met my gaze, terrified. Before he could say anything, I stepped forward. "Take me."
"Shay." I jump at the sound of my name, bringing me from my thoughts. "You okay?" Eiki asks me quietly, and I nod my head quietly, not wanting to draw anymore attention to myself.
(Tennoji's POV)
I watch as Red jumps in her seat, seeming to come back from spacing out. She had been staring at one of the pages in our packets for a long time, seeming to get lost. She looked more pale now, like she was gonna be sick or something. Her eyes meet mine, before she quickly looks away.
Something was up with Red, though I didn't know exactly what it was. Eiki knew something too, and I never did figure out why she was crying when I saw her at lunch with Eiki earlier.
"Why are there members from a gang that was in New York?" Hanai asks suddenly. "I mean, what are they doing over here. Plus I thought I read somewhere they were all arrested in New York years ago." Hanai looks to Kirisawa, though I notice Shay go rigid at the question, as she glances sideways at Eiki.
"It was my understanding that some parts of that case were unique, and the NYPD made deals with some of the members, so some didn't go to jail." Kirisawa answered, sounding slightly unsure himself, as he scratched the back of his neck. "Maybe Eiki and Shay know something?"
We all look to the two native New Yorkers, curious, but it's Eiki who speaks up first. "We were in the academy at that time. The NYPD just got a big bust on the Blood Dragons, bringing in most, if not all their members. We were still learning, but we heard a lot about the case, and later got to go over the files. There was certain circumstances for some members, who were allowed deals, and avoided jail time." Eiki explained.
"What kinda idiots do you guys have at the NYPD? Letting scum like gang members off the hook?" I scoff, unsettled by this. Why would they let people off? They could turn around and do something worse, like what was happening now.
"Some members didn't want to be in the gang in the first place. They got stuck, and couldn't get out." Shay snaps suddenly, her knuckles turning white from gripping the table so hard, fire in her eyes as she answers me.
I meet her gaze, wondering why she was getting so worked up over some asshole gang members. "What do you mean? Then maybe they shouldn't get mixed up with people like that to begin with then, if they would eventually want out." I shake my head, not getting it.
She opens her mouth to answer, but Eiki cuts in, stopping her. "This was different. The leader was taking abandoned kids off the streets, not telling them what they were getting into. He offered them a home, a place to stay and food. He never told them he was going to train them to be apart of his gang. So of course some poor lonely children would go with him, if they have nothing. By the time they figured it out, it was too late. He kept a close eye on them at all times, they were all trapped. Only way out was to die. Or, the cops got them out of there." Eiki explained, shaking his head at me.
"So that's why? They let the ones that were orphans go? They're trained killers, and they let them go." I scoff, shaking my head. Even if they were kids, they still killed, or hurt people, like Yuko.
"Not all members were orphans. There were willing members. And excuse the fucking cops for having some god dammed mercy on the kids that didn't even want to kill in the first place. They just wanted to survive, they wanted a way out. Excuse the fucking cops for giving them a second chance at having a fucking life!" Shay snapped, her eyes watering as she yelled, everyone going quiet.
She shot straight up, knocking her chair over, before storming out of the room, slamming the door behind her. I glance at everyone else, and it's Eiki that breaks the silence. "They kept those kids scared. They abused them, to the point they were so scared, they did what they were told, or get beaten so bad they were an inch away from death. Those kids did what they had to do to survive in the world they were thrown into unwillingly, and all they wanted was a way out, a better life. The NYPD did the best they could to help them, even though they might have been adults when they finally got out. I see nothing wrong with that. Excuse me, I'm going to check on Shay." Eiki finished, shooting a glare my way, before leaving the room.
"Way to go Tennoji." Hanai smirked
"Shut it Hanai. Why the hell did she get so worked up over an old case anyway."
(Eiki's POV)
I quickly make my way towards the bathrooms, not sure if that was where she went. I stop outside the women's bathroom, but the sound of sobs through the door let's me know I've found her, and I go ahead and go in, more concerned about her crying than I am for catching shit for going in the girls room.
The stalls are all empty, and I find the red head sitting on the floor by the sinks, curled up in a ball, hugging her legs to her chest, tears streaming down her face, as she sobs. "Shay." I say her name quietly, and she looks up, blinking a few times, probably to clear her vision.
I make my way over, sitting next to her, before reaching over, and pull the crying woman into my arms, burying her face in my chest. "Shay.. He didn't know. He doesn't have the full story." I murmur quietly, as she continues to cry.
"You heard him. I'm scum Eiki. Ex gang banger scum. It doesn't matter if I didn't know, if I was a kid pulled off the streets. He's right, I still killed. He fucking hates me." She cried, griping my arms as she continued to cry harder.
"He doesn't even know Shay. He doesn't know you were one of them. And with any luck tonight we'll never even have to open your files to everyone." I tried to reassure her, running my fingers through her hair to try and soothe her. I hated seeing her cry. It was like watching my sister cry. I'd always considered her like a sister, ever since I had gotten to know her in New York.
"How can he not know? Especially after I yelled back there and basically defended the kids that got taken? How could he not know?" She wailed, panicking that Yutaka knew her secret.
"I don't think he does. For all you know he thinks that you have a soft spot for the kids, and that you believe the NYPD made a good decision. It's where you're from after all. You have a right to defend your home towns police department. Even if he didn't agree with it. I defended it too after you left, so he probably doesn't know." I reassure her. Yutaka was smart, but I doubt he even considered Shay was once involved in the gang we were talking about.
"Come on, you need to get cleaned up, and we need to head back. No matter what Shay, I'm on your side." I told her, and she nodded, standing up from the floor, before going to wash her face in the sink.
I stood up, and waited for her to finish. "Eiki..." She hesitates slightly, fidgeting. "I recognized one of the blood dragons in the packet."
(Tennoji's POV)
We all look over the packets more, though the thought occurs to me that I should see the page Shay was staring at. I lean over the table, trying to see which page, when the door opens. I quickly jump back, plopping down in my seat, as Shayla and Eiki walk back in.
All I got was that it was one of the New York guys, his name started with a D, I think. Eiki sits down, and Shay picks up her chair, before taking a seat too. "So, everyone pair off, and we will communicate through our radios okay? We're going to make sure we get them this time." Kirisawa announces, placing the radios on the table.
I watch as Kyobashi and Asano pair up, heading to the garage, then Eiki and Hanai pair up as well. Kirisawa walks alone, leaving me and Shay alone. "Hey red... I'm sorry.." I apologize quietly, and her eyes widen in shock.
"I didn't mean to upset Ya, you know? I just... I wasn't thinking.. Anyway.. It's an old case, no use bringing it up now. Whoever they let off back then, it don't matter now. What's done is done, let's just go bring em in before they hurt someone else." I say, walking towards the door.
"Okay." She agrees, following me down to the garage.
The ride to the school is quiet, Red not talking much. "Red. I am sorry... It just... It reminded me of my sister. She got attacked waiting for me to get outta work. She was waiting for me at the train station, and some gang members attacked her." I pause a moment, thinking back to when Yuko got hurt. "I was caught up in a case, lost track of time. I should have met her on time, but I was late. Didn't think nothing of it, till cops got called, saying a gang shooting had taken place at the station. I got there too late." I slam my hand on the wheel, still pissed that I failed my sister. "I got there too late, and now she's stuck in her wheelchair, not able to walk, all because I couldn't fucking leave work on time. If I would've gotten there sooner, maybe she wouldn't have been there. Or maybe if I was there I could've protected her Ya know?" I ask quietly, as I ramble on.
I feel a hand on my arm, making me glance over at Shay. "It wasn't your fault Tennoji. There was nothing you could do. Though I don't know her very well, I don't think your sister blames you at all. In fact, she looked pretty happy with you today. I think she's just grateful to be alive. She seems happy. So don't blame yourself. It was whoever hurt her, it was their fault, not yours. You can't change the past, you just have to do your best to move forward, and keep going. But I know, Yuko, she doesn't blame you." She tells me, meeting my gaze, as she squeezes my arm lightly, before pulling away.
"Thanks... Thanks Red."
"Sure."
"By the way, my sister also wanted me to ask you if you wanted to go hang out with her sometime. She liked you, for some unknown reason." I snort, tying to lighten the mood.
"I'd really like that, actually. Please tell her I'd love too, when we both have some time off."
"Will do Red. Anyway, looks like we're here. Ya ready?" I park the car, nudging my partner before we get out.
"As I'll ever be." She says, a determined look in her eyes as we approach the building. Shay and I take one of the downstairs exits, hanging out near the doorway, awaiting instructions.
"Do you think this is everyone or there might be more?" She asks suddenly, glancing at me.
"Who knows. We'll find out when we question them." I shrug, but we're interrupted by the sound of voices heading our way.
"We finished up our case, so we were curious if you needed help! Second unit? This is the right building right?" We hear someone talking too loud, accompanied by the sound of footsteps, and I groan in annoyance.
Shay raises an eyebrow, wondering what the hell was going on. "First unit. They always but in, right before we close a case. Always show up at the last minute, when the case is solved and we're about to make an arrest. They always take the arrest from us, always worried about credit and making themselves look good." I explain, exasperatedly.
"Assholes." Shay mutters, and we're interrupted again, by the sound of a window opening above us. I glance up, seeing several faces peering out the window. "Shit we've been spotted." Red curses, before repeating that into the radio to Kirisawa.
"Everyone move." Kirisawa yells, and me an Shay run through the door, racing up the stairs to the room we had seen everyone in.
We burst through the door, to find it empty, with a few papers lying around scattered across the desk. "Boss, there's papers in the room they were in. We're going to try and catch up, we'll grab the papers later." Shay announces, before bolting out the door again. I quickly follow her, and I hear the sound of another set of running footsteps, that don't belong to either of us.
As soon as we turn the corner, we see a figure sprinting ahead, heading for the roof. "Freeze police!" I yell, and the figure turns around, as we catch up. We both draw our guns as we approach him. The guy appears to be around the same age as us, tall, kinda lanky, with dark brown hair that hangs over green eyes. He quickly draws a gun, aiming at us, though he stares directly at Shay.
"Drop it." She growls as she takes a step forward. I follow right next to her, aiming at the guy.
"I never expected to be thrown into this situation with you again Shay. Let alone this time you're a fucking cop." The guy says, his eyes hardening as he glares at my partner. What the fuck is going on?
"I had hoped neither of us would be put into this kind of situation again. I'm disappointed, you were given a second chance, and this is how you use it?!" Shay growls, obviously they knew each other. But how?
"And you think becoming a cop was a good use of your second chance?" The stranger responds flippantly.
"To make up for it, yes. Drop the gun Daniel. Drop it. Don't make me shoot you." She grounds out, her teeth clenched as she faces off with him.
"You'd shoot me? Funny last time you couldn't even pull the trigger when you were supposed to shoot me." Daniel scoffed, as I glanced between the two, trying to figure out what they were to each other.
"Things change Danny. You couldn't shoot me then either. But I will if you give me no choice." She says softly. I could tell she was hoping he would drop it.
"You're right, things do change." Daniel replied, before raising his gun, but instead of Shay, he turns it on me, before pulling the trigger.
The shot goes off, and I feel a sting that turns into a constant burning, in my thigh. I lean against the wall, keeping my gun up, but Shay quickly fires at the guy, shooting him in the shoulder. He looks confused, like he didn't think she would actually shoot.
"How could... This isn't over Shay." He shouts, before making a run for it, while he holds his bleeding shoulder.
"You shot my partner. That's how I could.." I hear her mutter to herself, as she looks at me, then Daniel, and back again, not sure if she should chase the perp or help me.
"Go after him red." I tell her, and she grabs the radio, calling Kirisawa.
"Officer down. We need assistance. A bullet wound to the thigh, suspect heading for the roof. I lost him." She announces, not even trying to follow him, as she comes over to me, helping me sit down on the floor.
"I said go after him Red." I repeat myself, only for her to roll her eyes at me.
"I'm not leaving you idiot." She scolds me, before producing a knife from inside her boot.
"What the hell Ya gonna do with that?" I ask, eyeing the knife.
I watch as she pulls her shirt away from her body, before taking her knife, and using it to cut off the bottom of her shirt. "What do Ya think?" She rolls her eyes again, stashing the knife back in her boot, before wrapping the piece of her shirt around my thigh, to stop the bleeding.
"How do you know him Red?" I ask, as she goes rigid at my question, not meeting my gaze.
