Peyton's POV

When I round the corner I see five buff guys. I look from one to the other, wondering who is who. I settle on the oldest, thinking he must be Sam. "Sam?" I ask looking at him.

"Peyton" he says nodding. "This my beta Jared, Third in Command Paul, Embry and Jacob" he says introducing us. I nod and a woman appears. "Emily go inside" he says.

"No Sam, can't you see she is scared?" she asks him. She approaches me slowly with a smile. "I'm Emily, don't mind them they are big teddy bears really" she tells me. I give her a small smile. "You look hungry, I just made lunch. Would you like some?" she asks. I nod and se takes my hand leading me inside past the pack.

"I'm Peyton" I tell her.

"Help yourself, otherwise the others will eat it all" she tells me. I nod sitting at the table. I pile a ton of the food on my plate and start to tuck in. As the pack enter the house and take spots at the table. It feels more relaxed inside.

"So how long have you been able to shift?" Sam asks.

"December last year, got kicked out because of it" I tell him.

"So you're parents aren't shifters?" Embry asks and Jacob elbows him.

"My mum wasn't, but I never knew my dad. Mum died when I was six, been in the foster care system ever since" I state.

"You're an orphan?" Emily asks and I nod my head. "How old are you?" she asks.

"16, turn 17 in October" I state.

"How are you here?" Jacob asks.

"Well after I was kicked out, I felt drawn here. No idea why, so I saved up money doing odd jobs. Then set out to come here, I took longer then expected as I was to fascinated by each new forest" I say sheepishly.

"Wouldn't the police be looking for you?" Paul asks and I shrug.

"No idea" I tell him. "So I take it since, you used the term shifter. We aren't werewolves?" I ask.

"No we are not, we are wolf shifters" Sam states. "It has been in our blood for centuries. When a vampire is near, the fever sets in and we turn" he explains.

"So I was right, vampires do exist" I mutter.

"Yep, we killed one a few days ago" Paul states.

"And his red headed girlfriend is next" Jared adds.

"With you we might be able to catch her, she is pretty fast for a vampire" Embry states.

"Guys, she's not a part of the pack" Jacob tells them.

"But I could be a descendant" I tell him. "Why else would my wolf lead me here? Why not another pack somewhere else?" I ask.

"She makes a good point" Sam states.

"Does that mean I can stay?" I ask and he looks at the others.

"It'll be a pack decision" he tells me. I nod my head in understanding.

"So you said Emily is your imprint, what does that mean?" I ask curious.

"When a shape-shifter imprints on a specific girl or woman, he becomes unconditionally bound to her for the rest of his life. When it happened to me, the experience was like being gravitationally pulled toward  Emily while a glowing heat filled me. Everyone and everything else in my life becomes secondary, and only the imprintee in this case Emily was left to matter. Leaving the me with a deep need to do anything to please and protect her" he explains.

"Wow, sounds romantic" I say with a smile.

"Wasn't completely romantic, he was dating my cousin at the time and it broke her heart" Emily states. "But we're together now and are engaged" she states.

"Congrats" I say.

"So where are you staying?" Emily asks.

"Probably go back to the cave" I mumble.

"You will not sleep in a cave" Emily tells me firmly. "I have more then enough room here, you can have one of the spare rooms" she states.

"That's not necessary" I tell her.

"It is" Sam states. "I told you, there are hunters in the woods hunting us. It is not safe out there alone" he tells me.

"Why are they hunting you?" I ask him.

"They think we're killing people" Paul states.

"But we aren't, it's the vampires. But the town doesn't know about us or them. So blame us wolves for the deaths. So while we hunt the vampires, we are being hunted" Sam explains.

"Though an elder in on our secret is apart of the hunting party and does his best to keep us up to date with their search grid. And covers our tracks when possible" Jared explains.

"I want to help" I tell them. "If there are vampires killing innocent people, I want to help fight them" I state.

"No" Sam says. "Even if we accept you into the pack, you have a lot of training to do before you are ready to face a vampire" he tells me. I pout. "Jacob, can you please go inform your father of the new situation?" he asks.

Jacob nods his head and left. "Jared, take the others and continue patrolling" Sam orders. Jared nods his head and left with the others. "So Peyton, you have no last name at all?" he asks me.

"My mother's maiden name was Swan, I think she mentioned a brother. But I can't be sure, I was only six when she passed" I tell him.

"Didn't Charlie have a sister years ago?" Emily asks Sam.

"Yeah, she left town about eighteen years ago after having a fling with my uncle Thomas" Sam states.

"So we could be related?" I ask him hopeful.

"It is possible, but only my uncle would know for sure and he is dead" he states.

"Wouldn't Charlie know?" I ask.

"Not really, he and his sister weren't close" he tells me.

"Why not take a DNA test?" I ask.

"To risky, we are different to humans. We'd need someone in on the secret, who we trust to do it. But only Doctor whose does know about us, is gone and we do not fully trust him or his family" he states.

"Why?" I ask confused.

"They're vampires, but they feed on animals and not people" Emily states.

"Which is why we have a treaty with them, but they left last year and it doesn't look like they'll be returning" Sam explains. "You should wash up and get some rest. I'll let you know our decision as soon as possible" he tells me. I nod my head and Emily tells me where the bathroom is.
