The Future
I clung to Jared's arm as he opened the back door. He had taken me up to Jenny's room to see her lifeless body. I had to sit alone in the dining room as Jared and Gabe carried her body, which was rolled up in a sheet, out the door. Lindsay was locked in her bedroom. I could hear her crying and banging on the door. I cringed when I thought of what her punishment may be.
Jared was taking me out of the house to see Jenny's grave. He must have more trust in me now. The autumn air was cold, and Jared made me wear one of his sweaters over my clothes. He gave me my old pair of running shoes back. They were the ones that I was wearing the night Gabe found me.
"This is where we bury everyone," Jared said. "Dad and I already dug the grave."
I stayed quiet as we walked to the edge of the field behind the barn. There was a thin dirt path that lead into the thick array of trees. I kept my eyes on the ground as Jared pulled me along to make sure that I did not trip on any branches or roots.
He brought me to a clearing. The grass was wet with morning dew and was brushing up against my shins. Gabe was standing in the middle next to a pile of dirt. He had a shovel in his hands and another one was lying in the grass. There were little piles of rocks spread out across the clearing. It took me a second to realize that they were graves. Gabe smiled as we approached.
"Leah, sit on the ground," Gabe told me.
I nodded my head and let go of Jared's arm. The grass soaked through my jeans as I sat down. I could see Jenny's wrapped up body was already dumped in the grave. Jared picked up the other shovel.
"Do you remember your Grandfather, Jared?" Gabe asked.
"Bits and pieces," Jared said.
"He was a good man," Gabe said. "Your Grandmother will be so happy to be with him again."
I twirled the long grass around my finger and pulled it out of the ground. I averted my eyes from looking at Jenny's body. Jared dug his shovel into the pile of dirt and dropped a bit into the grave.
"How are you feeling, Leah?" Gabe asked. "I hope you did not catch whatever Theo and Jenny had."
"I feel fine." I kept my eyes on the grass. "I haven't been coughing or anything like that."
"That's good," he said. "You'll be carrying a child soon, so we don't need you getting sick."
I sucked in a deep breath. I looked up to see Gabe's back was to me. Jared was smirking as he dropped another shovelful of dirt into the grave. Jared has not mentioned it since I first came here. I must have known that it would be on their mind.
"I'm sure that it will be any day now," Jared said.
My hand went over my stomach. It could have already happened. Jared and I were being intimate together. I could be carrying the next member of the Wilcox family inside me right now.
My mind was concentrated on the thought of a baby as Jared and Gabe finished burying Jenny's body. When he finished, Jared wiped his hands on his jeans before extending a hand down toward me. I grabbed it and let him pull me up onto my feet. He wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me close to his body.
"You kids better head inside," Gabe said.
"Is it alright if we spend some time in the barn?" Jared asked.
Gabe let out a deep breath and raked his fingers through his hair before nodding his head.
"Alright," he said. "It's probably for the best. I have to deal with your mother."
"Come on, sweetheart," Jared said to me.
He pulled me forward as we walked back down the thin trail. I kept my gaze down to ensure that I did not trip on a root. If I was pregnant, I could not risk a fall.
We walked together back to the barn. Jared let go of me so that he could open the heavy door. I stepped in and looked around at the mess. The piles of people's junk stayed untouched from the last time that I was in the barn.
Jared closed the door before heading over to the radio. He clicked open the top before putting one of the many loose CDs that were sitting on top of the work bench into the player. A familiar classic rock song played. Jared turned and leaned against the workbench. He grabbed my hands and tugged me forward.
"Do what you did last time," he said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"The thing like this."
With our fingers intertwined, he moved our arms in sharp jerky movements. I threw back my head and giggled.
"You mean dancing?" I tightened my grip on his hands. "You need to loosen your elbows more."
I took over and rocked ourselves from side-to-side with the beat of the music. Jared had a large smile on his lips and I copied his expression. I started to hum along to the music. Jared yanked me forward, and I stumbled into his chest. He pressed his lips against mine. He let go of one of my hands, and he slipped his hand under my shirt. His fingers were cold against my sensitive skin.
He broke our kiss and rested his forehead against mine.
"I love you so much," he said.
"I love you too," I said.
Jared smiled before he kissed me again and wrapped his arms tight around my waist.
--
I groaned as I stretched my arms up over my head and rolled onto my back. The sun was shining through the windows, leaving the shadow of the bars on the floor.
That was weird. We woke up before dawn every day.
I turned my head to see Jared was lying on his back with his hand on his chest. I looked over at the alarm clock to see that it was eight in the morning.
I propped myself up on my elbow. I held the blankets against my bare chest. I lightly shook Jared's shoulder. He sucked in a deep breath before his eyes fluttered open. He had a lazy smile, and took his hand off of his chest and tangled his fingers in my hair.
"What's the matter, beautiful?" he asked.
"We slept in," I said. "It's already eight."
"I know," he said. "I turned off our alarm."
"Why?"
"I asked Dad, and he said it was okay for today."
"Okay."
I lowered myself onto the bed. I shimmied across the bed so that I could rest my head on Jared's chest. He slid his hand across my bare back and kissed the top of my head.
We stayed cozied up next to each other for an hour. Neither of us said anything, and we just enjoyed each other's company. When we got out of bed, I changed into one of Jared's sweaters and a pair of jeans. I dragged my feet out of the bedroom and down the hallway. Jared was close behind me with his hand on my hip.
When we got downstairs, the kitchen was empty. I peeked into the dining room to see Lindsay sitting at the table. She had her hands wrapped around a mug of tea. My breath caught in my throat when she looked up at us. Her one eye was black and purple and almost swollen shut. I could see the gauze peeking out from under her sleeves.
"Hey, Mom," Jared said, like nothing was wrong. "Do you know where Dad is?"
"He went outside," she said. "Do you want breakfast?"
"Let me talk to Dad first."
He kissed my cheek before stepping out of the dining room. Lindsay tried to smile, but the corners of her lips barely lifted. She held her hand out to gesture to the chair across from her. I pulled it out and sat down.
"Are you okay?" I asked.
"I'm fine," she said. "I'm better now."
"Shouldn't you have like ice on your eye or something?"
"Don't worry, sweetie. Gabe already took care of me."
I bit down on my bottom lip. I wanted to say something, but I had no clue what to say.
There was a cry off in the distance. Lindsay sipped her tea, and was clearly unphased by the noise. The crying grew louder and into a scream. I leaned back to look at the back door. The door handle jiggled a few times before the door opened.
The screaming intensified.
Jared was walking in with his back to me. I stood up and walked into the kitchen. I could hear Lindsay call out my name, but I ignored her.
Jared had a girl in his arms. His hand was pulling back her blonde hair, and he had his pocket knife against her throat. Her face was bright red as the tears streamed down her face.
"Please," the girl said as she drew out the word. "Please, don't hurt me."
She was thrashing against Jared's grip. Her bright blue eyes darted over to me. She let out another cry as Jared dragged her across the kitchen towards the hooks.
Her long blonde hair and blue eyes were so familiar to me. It was almost like looking in a mirror. The girl was even the same height and weight as me.
Without thinking, I ran over to Jared and grabbed the girl's arms. Jared raised an eyebrow at me. He shook his head before removing the blade from her throat.
"What are you doing, Leah?" he asked.
"You can't hurt her," I said.
Jared let out a deep breath and rolled his eyes before putting the blade back against her throat.
"We're not doing this right now," he said. "Now go sit down with Mom."
The girl's eyes connected with mine and I lunged forward.
