Sobs and Cries
I wiped my wet hands on my jeans as I ran up the stairs. The screaming continued, and I recognized it as Lindsay's. Theo's door was wide open. I ran into the room to see Lindsay was kneeling beside the bed. Theo's eyes were closed, and Lindsay threw herself across his body. Lindsay was crying as she clung to Theo's body.
I was standing frozen in the doorway. Theo didn't move as Lindsay cried on his chest. I squinted to see that his chest was no longer rising every few seconds. Theo was not breathing.
I got on my knees next to Lindsay. I grabbed her shoulders and tried to pull her off of Theo's lifeless body. She shoved me off. I grabbed her arms, but she pushed me away.
"He can't be dead," she said. "My baby cannot be dead."
"Lindsay-" I started.
"No," she cut me off. "No, this can't be happening to me."
"Lindsay!"
"No!"
I reached out again, but she batted me away. I held my hands to my chest. Lindsay laid her head on Theo's chest and squeezed her eyes shut. It looked like she was praying to hear a heartbeat. She whispered incoherent words to herself before letting out another cry. I wanted to run out of the room, but I did not think that I should leave Lindsay alone.
I took in a sharp breath when the realization hit me. Theo was my way out of this house. He was the only one with a key who would let me out of here.
The key.
Theo still had the key around his neck. If I got Lindsay out of this room, I could sneak back in and take Theo's key. Lindsay was so distraught that she would not notice if I slipped out of the house. Jared and Gabe were out back, so they would not realize I was gone until I was far away.
I got up off of the floor. I placed my hand on Lindsay's back as she sobbed. I rubbed her back, and she shook her head.
"Let's go down to the kitchen," I said. "You need a glass of water and some tissues."
"I can't leave my baby," she said.
"He will be up here," I said. "I want to help you calm down."
Lindsay lifted her head off of Theo's chest. She hastily wiped the tears off of her face. She took in a deep breath before getting up off of her knees. She leaned down and kissed Theo's forehead. When she turned around, she pushed the strands of her hair that have escaped her ponytail out of her face. Her face was pale and her eyes were bright red. She did not say anything, but held her hand out. I took it, and we walked out of the room together. We made our way down to the dining room, and Lindsay sat down in her usual spot at the table.
Lindsay opened her mouth to say something, but shook her head as the tears rolled down her cheeks. She covered her face with her hands as she cried.
"This can't be happening," she kept repeating.
"I'll be right back," I said. "I'll get you a glass of water."
I hurried out of the dining room and made my way up the stairs. I could hear Lindsay's crying from upstairs. Her cries were so loud it sounded like she was right next to me. I went into Theo's room and walked towards his body.
"I'm so sorry," I whispered before pulling the key off from around his neck. His skin was cold to the touch. I smiled as I held the key out in front of me. I was finally going to have my escape. I shoved the key into the back pocket of my jeans.
When I got back down to the kitchen, Lindsay was still wailing. I poured her a glass of water from the tap. I sat it down on the table beside Lindsay. She wrapped her arms around my waist. Her tears soaked into the thin material of my shirt. She cried out, but I could not understand what she was saying.
The back door opened, and I looked over my shoulder to see Gabe walking in. He was wiping the dirt off of his hands with a rag. His eyes grew wide when he saw us and he hurried over.
"What's going on?" he asked. "I heard crying from outside."
Lindsay let go of my waist. Gabe grabbed my arm and pulled me back. He got down on his knees beside Lindsay's chair. She was crying into her hands. Gabe put his one hand on her knee and the other on her back.
"What's wrong, sweetheart?" he asked.
"He's gone," Lindsay said. "Our baby is gone."
"What are you talking about?"
Lindsay shook her head and took in several sharp breaths. Gabe looked over at me. He raised his eyebrow, and I took that as a motion to tell me to start speaking.
"Theo died," I said.
Gabe let out a deep breath as he closed his eyes. He sat in silence for a minute before turning back toward Lindsay. He picked the glass up off of the table and forced it into Lindsay's hands.
"Drink this," he said. "I am going to upstairs and check on him."
"He's dead," Lindsay said. "There's no need to check on him."
"I want to see him," he said. "Now, drink this and calm down."
Lindsay nodded her head. Gabe got up off of his knees. He kissed Lindsay's cheek before leaving the dining room. She took a sip of the water before wiping the tears off of her cheeks.
I shifted my weight from foot to foot. The key was heavy in my back pocket. I wanted to take off running, but I could not do that with Gabe in the house. He would see me running from Theo's room. I prayed that he did not notice that the key was missing from around Theo's neck.
"I should have known," Lindsay said quietly, as if she did not intend for me to hear. "He was coughing up blood. Blood and a lot of blood. I knew that would be fatal, and I did nothing about it."
"Lindsay, it is not your fault," I said.
She looked up at me. Her bottom lip trembled. She raised the glass, as if to have another sip, but stopped before she reached her mouth. She squeezed her eyes shut, and another tear ran down her cheek. She shook her head before slamming the cup down onto the table. The stairs squeaked as Gabe came back downstairs.
"I'm going to get Jared," he said before going out the back door.
This was my chance. I only had minutes to get out of here before Gabe came back in with Jared.
Lindsay resumed crying. She buried her head in her hands. I took a few steps back, but she did not notice. I snuck out of the dining room and hurried down the hall. I pulled the key out of my back pocket. My fingers fumbled with the key as I tried to put it into the lock. I dropped the key, and swooped down to pick it up. I was about to put it back into the lock when I heard a screech. It was higher pitch than Lindsay's crying. I shoved the key back into my back pocket.
I stepped back to see see that Jenny was in the living room. She was rocking back and forth and scratching her nails into the wood of the arm rest. She opened her mouth and let out another screech.
I jumped as an arm wrapped around my waist. I turned to see that it was Jared. I stepped back, but his fingers curled into my waist. Lindsay's sobs echoed through the house.
"I heard what happened," he said. "Are you okay?"
I nodded my head. "Yeah."
"Did you see the body?" he asked.
"Yeah, I did," I said. "Lindsay found him though."
He closed his eyes and shook his head. He let go of my waist. Jenny let out another cry. Jared opened his eyes and stepped around me. He crouched down in front of Jenny, and he took her hands in his. Jenny stopped rocking and stared at Jared.
"Hey, Grandma," he said. "I'm not sure if Mom told you, but Theo has died. Do you want me to take you upstairs to say goodbye?"
Jenny shook her head, and Jared stood up. He walked over to me and wrapped his arms around me. He kissed the top of my head and held me against his chest.
"I have to go help Dad bury Theo," he said. "Stay with Mom, okay?"
"Okay," I said.
"Lindsay!" Gabe yelled from the dining room.
Jared grabbed my hand and pulled me behind him into the dining room. Lindsay was on her knees and clutching at Gabe's legs. Gabe was trying to shake her off, but she cried and shook her head.
"Gabe, you can't do that!" she yelled.
"Linds, I have to," he said.
"Please, Gabe. Please, don't. Give me some time."
"We have to bury him, Lindsay. We can't keep him in the house. Jared and I will be back in an hour. Jared, help me get your mother up."
Jared let go of my hand. He grabbed under Lindsay's arms and pulled her off of Gabe. She swung her arms, and Jared grabbed her wrists. He pinned them against her chest. Lindsay's legs gave out underneath her, and Jared had to hold her up. Gabe pulled out a chair, and Jared dragged his mother over to the seat. Lindsay collapsed onto the kitchen table and sobbed.
"Let's get going before it gets dark," Gabe said to Jared.
"Let's go," Jared said.
The two of them headed up the stairs and I was stuck downstairs with Lindsay. The house key was burning in the back of my pocket. I had an hour to get out of here.
