Jacob and Alex
"Have a seat at the table," Jared told the two men. "I'm just going to go upstairs and look for a map."
"Okay," the man said with the sunglasses said. "We really appreciate this. My name is Jacob and this is Alex."
"Nice to meet you," he said. "Leah, get them a glass of water."
I nodded my head and Jared went up the steps. I filled up two glasses of water at the sink. Jacob leaned against the kitchen counter. Alex's eyes were scanning the room, and he stopped when he saw the bars that covered the windows. My hands were shaking as I handed them each a glass.
"That's quite some security you have got there," Alex said.
I kept my eyes down on the floor and nodded my head. Alex raised his glass to his mouth, but stopped before he could take a drink.
"Why do you look so familiar?" he asked me.
My heart pounded in my chest. I shrugged my shoulders, but kept my gaze down to the floor. I did not want to imagine what was about to happen to these two innocent souls.
"He said your name is Leah, right?" Alex asked, and then paused for a moment. "You're Leah Marshall, aren't you?"
I took in a sharp breath. It has been forever since I heard my old last name. If they knew me then that must mean people are looking for me. My mom must have filed me as a missing person. She is so worried about me, and there was no way for me to tell her I was safe. These two were the only ones who could give her a message from me. I could not let Jared kill them.
I listened for any noise, but I could not hear Jared moving around upstairs. Lindsay's crying had also disappeared.
"You need to get out of here," I said in a harsh whisper. "You need to go and tell my mom that I am safe."
"What's going on?" Jacob asked.
"Please, get out of here," I said.
The stairs creaked as Jared came down the stairs. Gabe was trailing behind him. I sucked in a deep breath and bit down on my cheeks. I prayed that they didn't hear what I told the two men.
"We've got a map here," Jared said, holding up a folded up map. "Where are you trying to go?"
"We're just trying to get back into town," Alex said. "We can just turn around and go back. You know, spend the night in a hotel or something."
"Don't be silly." Gabe ripped the map out Jared's hand. He opened it up and placed it on the dining room table. "Take a look at the map. We need to talk to Leah for a second."
My heart pounded as Jared put his arm over my shoulders. Alex opened his mouth, and I shook my head. I did not need him mentioning that I am a missing person.
Jared pulled me out of the kitchen and into the living room. Gabe was behind us. I picked at the hem of my sweater as I waited for their punishment. They definitely heard what I said. I shouldn't have said anything. I just wanted my mom to know that I was okay.
"Leah, this is time for you to show us how much you love your family," Gabe said. "I want you to kill one of these men."
My jaw hung open and I shook my head.
"No, no, no," I said. "I can't do that."
"Jared is going to take care of him so that he won't hurt you," he said. "I want you to finish him though."
Gabe pulled his knife out of his pocket. He grabbed my wrist and shoved the pocket-knife into my hand. He closed my fingers my fingers over the blade. Knowing the innocent man's fate made the knife seem like it weighed a thousand pounds.
I looked over at Jared. He smiled and nodded his head. I wanted to ask him why they were making me do this, but I knew that I couldn't ask any questions. I had to trust them that this is what was for the best.
"Let's go," Gabe said.
He stepped past me and then went down the hall. I stared at the knife in my hand. Jared put his hand on the small of my back and kissed my temple. I squeezed my eyes shut, and leaned into his body.
"It's going to be okay," he said. "I'm not going to let them hurt you."
"Thank you," I said.
Jared guided me out into the hallway. When we got to the dining room, Gabe was leaning over the table. He was tracing his finger along the map, like he was showing directions to Alex and Jacob. The two of them were sharing glances between them.
Jacob's eyes locked on mine, and I froze in place. He held his hands up and took a step back from the table.
"Listen," he said. "I don't know what is going on here, but we don't want any trouble. We are going to go, and we promise we won't say anything."
The tension eased from my muscles. Jacob took a step toward me, and I gasped when he grabbed my arm.
"We know Leah is missing-" he started.
"Don't touch her." Jared ripped Jacob's hand off of me.
"Jared, pass it to me," Gabe said.
Jared reached into his pocket, and threw something across the room. Gabe caught the item. In one quick motion, Gabe flipped open the blade and plunged it into Alex's neck. He pulled the knife out, and blood gushed over Gabe's hand. Alex's scream was gurgled because of the blood rushing into his throat. His hands went up to the gaping wound in his neck. He fell to his knees. The blood spurted over the wall and the floor.
Jared grabbed Jacob and tackled him to the ground. Jacob swung his hands out and tried to punch Jared. Jared put his knee between Jacob's shoulder blades. He grabbed his hands and pinned them behind Jacob's back. Jacob let out a scream as he tried to shake off Jared. Gabe stepped over Alex's twitching body, and came toward us.
"Can you help me bring him over to the drain?" Jared asked Gabe.
Gabe leaned down and grabbed one of Jacob's arms. Jared removed his knee from Jacob's back. They dragged his body over to the drain in the kitchen. Jacob was thrashing around and trying to get out of their grip.
"Let go of me!" he scream. "You're fucking sick. You can't do this to me!"
"Watch your language," Gabe said. "There's a girl around."
"A girl you kidnapped!"
"A girl we saved from people like you."
Jared let go of Jacob with one hand, and pulled the shower curtain back. Jacob looked up at the bloody rusted hooks and let out a scream. Gabe grabbed a fistful of Jacob's hair, and shoved his face down next to the drain.
"Come on, Leah," Gabe said.
I looked down at the knife and back to Jacob's struggling body.
"I can't do this," I said.
"Yes you can," Gabe said. "Show us how dedicated you are to this family."
"I can't kill him."
"Jared, go help me."
Gabe grabbed Jacob's other arm and Jared let go. My eyes burned as the tears started to roll down my cheeks. I shook my head and took a step back as Jared came up toward me. He reached out and cupped my face with his hands.
"Leah," he said. "It's okay, sweetheart."
"Please," I begged. "Please, don't make me do this."
"We'll do it together."
Jared brushed the tears off of my cheeks before leaning in and giving me a kiss. Jacob screamed and thrashed against Gabe's hold.
"Don't do it, Leah!" Jacob screamed. "I know they've kidnapped you."
"How does he know that?" Jared asked. "What did you tell him?"
"Nothing, I swear," I said. "He recognized me. I guess my birth mother reported me missing."
It was odd to refer to my mother as my birth mother. I was so worried about committing murder that I said it without hesitation.
"Come on." Jared grabbed my hand. "Let's do this."
"No, please," I said. "Jared, don't do this."
I dug my heels into the ground as Jared pushed me forward. He put a hand on my shoulder and forced me down onto my knees. He got onto the floor next to me. Jacob's skin was bright red and tears were streaming down his face. Jared took the knife out of my hand, and flipped it open so that the blade was out.
"You saw how Dad did it," Jared said. "Do the same thing. Aim for his neck."
"I can't do it," I said.
"Yes, you can," he said. "If you kill him then you don't have to watch Dad and I dismember his body."
I sucked in a deep breath. If I did this, and if I did it quick, I could get away from all of this. I remember watching Theo hack that girl's body to pieces. I could not stay and watch Gabe and Jared do that to these two men. They would probably want me to help too. I had to get away from this as fast as I could.
"Do it, Leah," Jared said.
"No, no!" Jacob screamed. "Don't do this."
"Do it now."
"Leah-"
I tightened my grip on the handle of the knife. I closed my eyes and swung the blade down. I felt resistance as I tried to pull the blade out of his throat. I blindly stabbed Jacob two more times before I opened my eyes.
Blood was soaking through the front of my sweater. There were warm drops of blood covering my face. The blood was coating Jacob's body, and I could not see the holes in his neck. I looked to the side to see the crimson splatters on his skin. His lips were spread into a wide smile.
"You did great, beautiful," Jared said.
He grabbed my chin and kissed me. Gabe wiped his hands on his jeans and got up off of the floor.
"You can go upstairs now," Jared said.
I nodded my head and got back up onto my feet. I ran upstairs to our bedroom.
