Chapter 1
Black Veil Bride's 'Devil In The Mirror' blasted through my headphones as I stood outside a jewelry shop, looking at some charms in the window. The thought of getting another charm for Bella, something actually bought from a store, had crossed my mind the other day at school. In two days Bella would be turning eighteen, and that's when everything would go down from there.
I was so frustrated; I wanted the Cullen's to stay, but needed a way to get the wolves really involved with Bella's life so they'd be there later. This whole concept made me want to pull out my hair.
Growling under my breath, I pushed open the door to the jewelry store and stepped out of the wind. I had come down to Settle in hopes of finding a store exactly like this. I wasn't sure what I'd find, seeing as I haven't had much time to explore. Even thought I've been in this part of town for other reasons. And that's saying something since I've been here a whole book and was now onto the next story line.
Pausing my music, I give a slight nod to the man and woman behind the counters and move in the opposite direction of customers. Looking into the glass case filled case with many expensive and flashy charms, I frown. I just wanted something simple, but sweet. Like Bella.
Rubbing my forehead, I sigh in frustration. This was obviously going to be harder then I thought.
Suddenly, the lady from when I entered steps in front of me and looks me up and down for a moment. As if judging my appearance. And by the way a repulsed expression crosses her face before quickly flitting away, she didn't like what she saw.
I wanted to snort, roll my eyes, and laugh. My clothes weren't some big name brands, except my shoes, but still. Its not like I wanted all that shit. The big name brands I've seen are mostly girly. Besides, I like my 'bad girl' look. It helps my reputation.
"Can I help you?" was the snobbish lady's question as her lips twitched in disapproval. Obviously she thought I wouldn't be able to afford anything here. Ha, well I was about to prove her wrong.
Raising an eyebrow at her, I look back at the charms before quickly deciding on what I wanted.
"That one," I tell her, looking back up. She blinks a couple of times before reaching down and pulling out the charm.
"I'd also like two of those," I tell her as she sets the charm on the counter. Looking slightly off, she does as told.
Paying, she looks slightly surprised as I hand her a debit card. Grabbing the bag, I stalk out of the store and start playing my music again.
"What a bitch," I mutter holding the bag tightly in my hand as I make my way down the street. Glancing at my watch, I quickly crossed the street before heading into another shop.
The wind had lessened, and the air was cooler as night came closer and closer. More people lined the street as many got ready for a fun filled night full of partying or just hanging at the bar with friends.
Pushing open the door, a little bell tinkled, announcing my presence. The small shop was a mixture of a bakery and a book store. I absolutely loved it. Especially ever since Kerian showed up at the Cullen's door step two weeks ago, it's nice to come here for some peace.
The lady that worked here was a single mom, her daughter was the cutest thing, and she had a hard time with business. Long story short, her husband dumped her for some slut a couple of days after their daughter was born. He wanted a son, not a daughter, apparently too.
"Clare!" Melody grinned and jumped down from a stool, a paper in hand. She rushed over to me, and I glanced at Olivia who smiled and waved, before crouching down to the little girls height.
Melody had just turned five and would be starting school next year. Since her birthday in was in September, she missed the cutoff and would be starting school later.
Handing me the page, Melody's green eyes sparkled with excitement. She looked exactly like her mom, with her straight blond hair and heart shaped face. The green eyes came from the father, or some I like to call the sperm donor. Because he really isn't any kind of father to Melody. Just some man Olivia is going to have to tell Melody about one day when she asks where her father is.
Looking down at the paper, I saw three stick figures standing next to each other, holding hands. The sun was in the left corner, round and big, and black 'birds' flew through the air. A yellow and light blue house sat to the right with a big tree.
In Melody's messy hand writing, our names were written above the stick figures heads.
"Do you like it?!" Melody exclaims after I've had a moment to examine it. "I've been working on it all day, and want you to have it." She grins and I can't help but smile. I wrap my arms around her in a tight hug, my mind flashing to Lilith.
I quickly wipe her from my mind before leaning back and grinning at Melody.
"I love it."
The smile never leaves her face as she stares at me for a moment, happiness shining in her eyes, before she skips off to look at some books.
Holding the page carefully, I set it on the counter before taking a seat. Olivia sets some now clean mugs down on a shelf before turning to me and sighing. Rubbing a hand over her face she yawns and looks at me.
"Tuff night again?" she asks. I look just as bad as she does.
I yawn.
"I should be asking you that question," I tell her. She snorts, leaning against the counter.
"We both could be asking each other that question honey."
"Sweetie please, you're life is way worse then mine at the moment." Lie. Both our lives are pretty shitty at the moment. But she didn't need to know that. At least she still had Melody.
Olivia looks at me like she knows I'm lying. She moves to take off her apron and hangs it on the hook.
"Well, I'm done for the day. I think im going to close up a bit early," she tells me, moving to flip the open to closed sign.
"Need any help?" I question standing.
She waves me off.
"Nah, you get home now. It's getting late anyway."
Sighing, I give her a hug, calling a bye to Melody, before making my way out into the cold. A bad feeling sweeps over me as I glance back at Olivia. Shaking it off, hoping it's nothing, I make the long trek to my car before heading to the Cullen's. Ever since Kerian arrived, we've both kinda moved in with the Cullen's.
They didn't seem to mind thankfully, it just means I've had to be real careful with what I say or do. Like, no conjuring up Kristina's 'ghost', or staying up all night. But I have been able to cast protective spells and crap.
My mind does a 360 and turns toward Lilith. I really hope she's okay. Who knows what Victoria is doing, or wants with her. Thats what confused me. Why Lilith? Was it because she could just take her? Or was it something more?
I want to bang my head against the steering wheel as I groan. I instead, I groan and turn onto the long dirt path that would lead to the Cullen's.
The bracelet is what Brianna/Clary gave Bella one night. Just FYI
