Chapter 7: Continue

I thought over my choice. If I quit, all my progress will be lost. In the beginning of all of this I always had an adrenaline rush. There are no saves, no extra lives, no respawn, but now... nothing can kill me.

Me: "System Menu Options, Open Photos."

Suddenly a photo album crystallized in my hands, I opened the first page. At the top it was labeled "Level 1". An image showing me trying to read a spell book from Tamerial. Me trying to forge my own weapons. Me practicing shooting a rifle in a post-apocalyptic landscape. Me running from a DeathClaw. Me trying to climb a huge 15th century chapel. I skipped quite a few pages to a new label, "Level ???" I chuckled.

Me: "Even the system lost count of my level. Plus it's kinda hard to calculate level when I've jumped from so many universes."

Me fist fighting a dragon. Me putting a Gorgon in a headlock. Me sitting on a throne in a blood covered palace. Me standing atop a giant beast. Me standing on a barren battlefield that was littered with bodies. As I flipped through the pages I noticed my smile began to fade with each photo. Gradually the creatures I had killed grew bigger, stronger, and even more unearthly, however my face showed no excitement. I flipped all the way to the back of the book, to the page labeled "Followers"

Me: "Aela, ClapTrap, Ellie, Elizabeth, Agro, Cortana, Navi, Link, Zelda, Quiet. I've met a lot of people who never even truly existed until I created this device. Although I've learned so much from people who aren't even real."

I closed the book and it disappeared.

Me: "I don't miss my reality. Yet I miss having challenge in my life. Learning at an exponential rate causes everything I do to become so easy I grow bored. It's like having an EXP booster on constantly. Even my brother showed envy towards me. He worked so hard for everything he had... but I made it all look easy. System Menu Options, Show Stats."

A menu appeared and my stats popped up. Every last one was at 9999. I mastered everything. From Illusion magic to Cryomancy. Dexterity to Strength. I can teleport, fly, move at the speed of sound, rewind time, even rip through the fabric of reality. I can defy the laws of physics, I can break the limits of any universe, I adhere to no rules, I could conquer any dimension with the flick of a wrist. Yet having unlimited power is so boring. Like playing a game against someone that has no idea how to play. Every world I entered became dull, so I set locks on my skills, restrictions on my health, mana, stamina, and processing rate. Even those don't help anymore. I didn't predict this. So I didn't build an option to reset, looking back I should have. Then again, the device is hooked directly into my brain. Having the reset option would most likely erase my memories as well as my stats. There were moments I'd hate to forget... and moments I'd love to. I kicked up to my feet and stretched.

Me: "Suppose I'll continue."

Suddenly I heard heavy footsteps headed my way. So heavy they almost made the ground shake. I stopped and listened for a moment.

Me: "Four legs, slow pace, weight determines the power behind each step. Timing between each step suggests it's size is comparable to... a mammoth."

A large Grimm burst through the tree line, and, as I predicted, it looked exactly like a re-skinned mammoth. I sighed and slowly walked towards it as it charged me.

Me: "I have no limitation. Unlimited power is mine within that which is universal."

Text appeared in the top left of my vision. It read "Skill Restrictions Off" I stretched one hand outward, my palm facing the giant beast. Once it got within striking distance it used its tusks to try and ram me. However I grabbed onto one of them and stopped the Grimm in its tracks. I took my index finger on my opposite hand and lightly tapped the mammoth's tusk, slicing clean through it as if it were cleanly cut with a razor sharp blade. I then sidestepped as the mammoth continued its charge and slide to a stop. I threw the portion of the tusk I still held onto the ground and faced the creature once more.

I sat at the foot of a large tree on the Beacon campus, going through my inventory, sorting, labeling, and marking things that I'd need to replenish soon.

Me: "I've got 7,568 healing potions, 8,540 mana potions, 7,689 stamina potions. 10,658 various poisons of varying strength and effect. 793 great arrows. 657 normal arrows. And I have about 764 miscellaneous items. Still no need to stock on anything that I already have. Although dust is new to me, I'm not sure they'll take any currency I have at the moment."

I sighed and looked up at the large tree.

Me: "Pretty quiet around here. Could probably read a book or something."

I suddenly remembered there was a library on campus. I had completely forgotten to visit it. I closed my menu and stood up, then headed down the path to the library. It was a nice day, so there were quite a few students walking about. I eventually reached the library and recorded its location in my map, then began walking around and browsing what they had. To my disappointment the library was on the smaller side. Then again when I was in my world I had access to over 164 million books in the Congress library and over 150 in the British library. The building was split into two sections, Fiction and Non-Fiction, it was rather simple so I decided to start with Fiction. I started at the very beginning of the section, and began going from A to Z. I would take a book from the shelf, open it, then close it and put it back on the shelf in the correct place. It took only a glance to record the book in my codex, luckily I didn't have to block up my storage with a bunch of books. The system would create a perfect copy for me. As I grabbed another book someone's hand landed on mine. I looked away from the shelf to see Blake reaching for the same book. She quickly retracted her hand and backed up.

Blake: "I'm sorry. I didn't-"

Me: "It's fine. I only need the book a moment, you'll be able to take it once I'm finished making a copy."

Blake: "Making a copy?"

I grabbed the book and did the same thing I did with the rest, then handed it to Blake.

Me: "Yes. The device I have allows me to record books into a personal library of sorts."

Blake looked stunned for a moment, most likely thinking over what I had just said.

Blake: "So... you can read a book in seconds?"

I sighed.

Me: "No you misunderstood. The book is only copied into my archive, the book doesn't get shoved into my brain. I still have to read it."

Blake: "Oh... so how many do you have so far?"

Me: "6,797. From different worlds of course. I've only recorded about 17 here. Which if you'll excuse me."

I turned back to the shelf and began recording once more, however Blake still stood there dumbfounded.

Blake: "Do you think I could read one?"

Me: "Read what?"

I didn't stop what I was doing as I spoke.

Blake: "One of your books."

Me: "I know that. I meant what kind of book. Fiction, Nonfiction, Romance, Drama, Horror, Thriller, what genre?"

Blake thought for a moment, she looked as though she came up with nothing.

Blake: "Surprise me."

I looked through my codex for a moment, then found one she may like.

Me: "System Command, Withdraw Book, Witcher Series, The Last Wish by Andrzej Sapkowski."

I held my hand out as a hard cover book appeared in my hand. I then handed it to Blake.

Me: "I believe you'll like this one. It consists of Romance, Drama, Action. The book you were grabbing was a Romance, slash, Action book so it should fit your tastes. Please remember to return it. I'm very particular about keeping my archives complete."

The black haired girl then thanked me and wondered off to go read. After a couple more minutes I decided to take a break and read one of the books I had picked up. I sat down at a random table and began to read a random story.

Me: "A man with two souls?"

I chuckled.

Me: "A hint at a certain Headmaster most likely. System Withdraw, Nuka-Cola, Quantity one."

The glass bottle appeared on the desk in front of me. I popped the cap off then put the bottle cap in my inventory. I took a drink as I read through the book. It was actually pretty good, a few plot twists, good character development, everything a book needed, besides a thrilling experience. Then again that could very well be my own fault. Nothing catches my attention very often. As I took another drink I heard a groan from behind me.

Yang: "Ruby you know I'm better at this then you."

Ruby: "You are not!"

I looked over my shoulder to see Team RWBY, accompanied by Team JNPR, sitting at a group of tables and playing some kind of board game.

Me: 'Might be more interesting then this book."

I closed the book and it went into my codex once more. I then turned my chair around and sat down at the table. Everyone besides Nora, who was sleeping, plus Blake and Ren, who were reading, looked at me.

Me: "Don't mind me. I'm simply going to watch."

Ruby, Yang, Weiss, and Jaune were playing the game, while Blake, Pyrrha, Ren, and Nora were sitting at another table. The game was pretty simple, close to a game in my original world. As I watched I noticed Jaune struggling to keep up with Weiss, Ruby, and Yang. I moved my chair over next to Jaune's and looked at the situation. I then leaned over and switched around his cards into a certain order.

Me: "Play defensively for a few rounds. Use the cards from left to right each round, no matter what don't deviate from what I've set up."

Jaune nodded hesitantly. The game continued on, however everyone began to notice the change in how Jaune was playing. The cards I had set him up to use were seemingly useless at this stage of the game. Add 1 resource point, slow one persons progress for a turn, etc... however as it seemed the game was coming to a close with Yang winning, Jaune played a card that used all of his resources and launched one last assault, moving all of his strongest troops into Yang's territory.

Yang: "Jaune that card is terrible. With what you have it basically just destroyed your kingdom."

Me: "Not quite. 'Beware of driving men to desperation. Even a cornered rat is dangerous.' And he bares an unmistakable resemblance to a cornered rat. Jaune, if you'd please play the next card."

Jaune: "R-Right."

The next card he played was a double edged sword, it would completely wipe out one opponent's army as long as your strongest pieces were in the same territory, while also killing off all but the weakest of yours. He played the card against Yang, taking her out of the war.  As for Jaune, the only piece that remained was a lone huntsman. Yang looked at the board, then to me and Jaune, then back to the board. Her hair began to rise and her eyes turned red, she opened her mouth to scream but Ruby lunged forward and covered Yang's mouth.

Ruby: "Yang, no yelling!"

Me: "You are aware you just yelled that, correct?"

Ruby suddenly looked around and saw the few people that were in here were staring at her. Ruby gave a nervous laugh and a quiet apology before slumping down in her chair once more. Yang angrily sat down, glared daggers at me, then turned away.

Me: 'Sore loser.'

It was now Weiss' turn, and, as expected, she completely ignored Jaune and went straight for Ruby. They began a back and forth, attacking, defending, while forgetting Jaune was technically still in the game, they didn't even give him a turn really. They most likely thought that they wouldn't want to waste a turn to finish him off, while giving the other time to prepare. Jaune slowly began building up more and more resources until finally Ruby had destroyed Weiss, just barely. She had only a few pieces of her army and only her capital of Vale remained.

Ruby: "Ha! I wi-"

Me: "Jaune is still playing. And it's his turn."

Ruby jumped and looked over at our side, she must have been too excited with celebrating her premature victory to realize Jaune was still holding a single card.

Ruby: "Huh? Oh... sorry Jaune, go ahead and finish your turn, you can just resign."

Me: "Play the last card Jaune."

Jaune looked at the card and nodded. Once he played it Ruby's eyes widened. A natural disaster card. "Wipe out one city of your choosing, must have 10 resources or more to use, will use all resources if enemy has troops still present in the chosen city."

Me: "Jaune wins."

I looked at the one piece Jaune had on the board and picked it up, playing with it in my hand I stared at the table with a little bit of joy in my voice.

Me: "Natural disaster cards can change an entire game. Play smart and you can beat the odds no matter who your opponent is..."

I looked at the piece before setting it back down in the middle of the board. I then got up and began walking away.

Me: "However, it's lonely at the top."
