Chapter 15: Player 1
I grabbed onto the Ursa's arm then flipped it over my shoulder sending it into a Beowulf. I pointed my index finger at them and spoke.
Me: "Lightning Spear."
A spear of lightning shot from my finger and went straight through both of them, leaving a nice sized hole in their chests. I then quickly spun on my heel and and landed a roundhouse kick to a leaping Creep's face, sending it flying to the side.
Aurora: "I see that you have multiple spells that could take out a large portion of these creatures. Would it not be best to use one?"
Me: "No. There are friendlies around, plus the collateral damage would be severe. Also, this is more fun."
I turned and saw three Beowulfves charging me.
Me: "Liz Slen Nus."
A frozen wind rushed from the words and froze all three of the Grimm in their tracks.
Me: "Crushing Prison."
An invisible cage formed around them and crushed them into pieces. I took this time to look around at the situation. More students, a large airship along with countless VTOLs and androids plus a few huntsman had arrived and began helping with the infestation. The Grimm were nearly destroyed by now, but I figured I'd help and try to burn a little energy. Honestly with all the help this quest was becoming boring very fast. As I turned to walk away I swatted a leaping Beowulf away with the back of my hand.
Me: "Aurora open a portal to my-"
Female: "Excuse me."
I looked over my shoulder to see a woman approximately 20 years of age or so. She had fair skin, ashen-black hair and bright amber eyes. She wore a crimson dress with glowing yellow highlights. She had a small smile, one that I could tell held mischievous intent.
Me: "Yes?"
Female: "You seem to be leaving, weren't you going to help?"
Me: "The battle is decided, I don't need to be here anymore."
Female: "I see... You fought well, where did you learn to be so powerful?"
I paused a moment, then turned around fully. The way she spoke, the tone in her voice and the way she led up to that question. She only approached me to ask this question.
Me: "True power is not learned, it is made with your own hands."
There was something odd about her presence, I could tell she was somewhat strong however it was not her strength. It's as if she were a proxy of a being more powerful then she could ever hope to be. Or perhaps she had stolen power that was not meant for her.
Me: "I have a suggestion for you."
I let my energy flow freely, not all of it just a small portion but from her change in posture and the expression on her face it was far more then what I needed to use. Her once mischievous and calm demeanor turned to fear and anxiety.
Me: "Perhaps instead of seeking strength from others, you should simply create your own. The most powerful foe, towards all creatures, is one that is unique only to you."
I turned and opened a portal manually, tearing through space easily.
Me: "And know that every strength is also a weakness."
Without another word I stepped through the portal and appeared in my lab.
Aurora: "That woman obviously seeks power, most likely for less then respectable purposes, shouldn't you have dealt with her now?"
I shook my head.
Me: "No. Why would I destroy someone else's goal for power if it robbed me of a more worthy opponent? Hopefully she will find the strength she seeks and come to face me on level ground, then I will deal with her when she is an actual threat to me."
I walked over to my computer and sat down.
Me: "Keep me updated on the situation in the city. Only the important things, nothing trivial."
Aurora: "Understood."

Me: "Morrigan, you're not coming with me."
Morrigan: "Oh? And what makes you think you can stop me?"
Me: "We wouldn't be able to take Kieran, he would be in too much danger, as would you."
Morrigan: "You still think you can stop me? Kieran will stay here until we are done, then we shall return and you can resume helping with his studies. And I can hold my own, you know I can."
I sighed, knowing how stubborn she can be.
Me: "Fine. Just stay behind me, okay?"
She smiled and kissed my cheek, I let a small smile escape as I took a deep breath. But that happiness was cut short as images flashed before me. The enormous dragon, the blood, the screams, and the upper half of Morrigan laying beside the rocks of the mountains. I felt no physical pain, I was unharmed, but there was deep pain inside my chest that I could not shake. The pain faded, along with my vision, and I woke up drenched in a cold sweat. I threw my blanket off myself and stood up. My chest felt tight and it was hard to breath. After a few deep breaths I began to feel normal once more. But the memory stayed. I was foolish that day. I could have forced her to stay. I could have forced her to stay, she would have lectured me to no end and probably been so mad she would have slapped me. But I would have preferred that over the true ending.
Aurora: "(Y/N)? Your vitals spiked a moment ago, are you okay?"
Me: "Yes. Just a bad dream. Get me to my lab please."
Aurora: "Would you like to talk about it?"
The interior suddenly changed to my lab and I began walking to my workbench.
Me: "No. I'm just gonna do some work, I'll start on the network patch for Vale's communications tower."
Aurora: "Oh... I've completed that already. We have a direct line to all of Vale's communications, both incoming and outgoing."
I sighed.
Me: "I see. Then I'll just start on the new robotics design I created. I have the resources in my inventory right?"
Aurora: "I'm afraid not. You are missing some important components such as; copper wire, optical lenses, and-"
Me: "Alright, I get it. What project is ready to start?"
Aurora: "I'm sorry but you don't have any projects that are ready to start, all of them need the proper materials. Perhaps you could try to sleep again?"
Me: "No. I just need to work on something. Pick the project that requires the least amount of materials then give me a list of the materials I need, I'll go get them now."
Aurora: "It is currently 2 in the morning, I highly doubt any shops will be open."
Me: "Fine... Set up the simulation chamber and set it to max, throw in a variety of enemies and set a lock on my inventory until I complete three waves."
Aurora: "(Y/N)... I am worried about you... perhaps-"
Me: "Don't... just set it up."
Aurora: "Understood..."
Once again the interior changed, this time I was in an open field. The simulation hooks directly into my device and projects everything to all of my senses. One by one enemies began to appear out of seemingly nowhere. Each enemy was something I had faced before, from Draugr to necromorphs. Without another thought, I rushed the closest enemy, a Draugr wielding a two handed battle axe. As soon as I was in range the undead swung at me. I ducked under the axe then grabbed onto the handle. I shouldered the undead away then swung the axe, cleaving the monsters head off in one swing. A Necromorph was charging me next, I lifted the axe then threw it. The blade of the axe lodged itself into the head of the creature, taking it off its feet. I moved my head to the side as a blast of plasma flew by my head. An Elite Zealot was charging me with a plasma rifle. I began dodging each of its shots while moving forward. As soon as I was in range of the alien I lunged forward and tackled it to the ground. Without hesitation I drove my fist through the Elites skull, crushing even the energy shield around it. I stood up and looked at the remaining enemies. Unfortunately for them, I wasn't exactly in the mood to burn energy, I just wanted to blow off some steam.
[Time Skip, Brought to You by Chibi Aurora Trying on Dresses]
I took a deep breath as the simulation came to an end. I finally felt normal again, both in mind and body.
Aurora: "(Y/N)."
Me: "Next wave."
Aurora: "(Y/N), I think you should-"
Me: "I said next wave Aurora."
The simulation suddenly changed. It was now a place I remembered too well. It was the scene of the moment Morrigan died.
Me: "Aurora. Change this, now."
Aurora's image appeared in front of me.
Aurora: "No. You've been running from this, I can tell. You think this emotion is not necessary."
Me: "Because it isn't. It is not logical to mourn something that is gone."
Aurora: "But it is something you, as a human, feel. You must face the fact that you are not unfeeling."
I sighed. I looked around, the scene was correct to the last detail. Morrigan on the ground and me, kneeling by her corpse. I had this bewildered look on my face, I remember not being able to comprehend what was happening. The smartest man in the world, couldn't comprehend why he was feeling the way he did.
Me: "I tried to get her back. But couldn't. I tried and tried again. At least thirty, maybe forty, times. But each one failed. Every resurrection spell, every revive item, every device I could create failed. I could bend reality, but for some reason I couldn't bring her back. No magic, no science, no ritual... my knowledge had failed me."
Aurora: "That was a first for you, wasn't it?"
Me: "Yes. It was. The only thing I could do was avenge my loves death."
The scene changed and showed me atop the dragon, wielding a massive greatsword.
Me: "I killed that dragon, not for the challenge, not for the experience, not even to simply say I did it... I killed it out of pure resentment. I didn't even harvest the materials from it... I threw the corpse into the deepest dimension I could find, then sealed it forever. I then buried Morrigan, left a letter to her son, and ran from that world... I couldn't show my face to them any longer."
Aurora: "After that you shut yourself off from everything. Your alignment went completely neutral."
Me: "Because everything is pointless when you can beat anything."
I focused for a moment and changed the scene manually. It showed me walking through a burning realm, pillars of fire and the smell of burnt flesh filled the air. Around me were countless corpses; angels, demons, and even humans.
Me: "I have conquered heaven, hell, and even the mortal world."
A look of indifference was the only armor I wore. I slowly walked around the scene, stepping over the bodies.
Me: "You know... I can calculate the formula to figure out the exact size of a planet in my head and under, at most, 6 seconds. I can tell you the coding that makes up your processing algorithms from sheer memory, and they're about 500 lines in length. But when it comes to emotions, I cannot see logic in it. I know emotions happen because of the chemical reactions within our brains, mostly pertaining to instincts. And I tried to get rid of my emotions through a scientific process, numbing my neurotransmitters to the point of shutting off permanently, but my device reversed the damage. The funny thing is, my thought process hasn't changed since the day Morrigan died."
Aurora: "My theory is that humans slowly gave true meaning to emotions over their evolution. Turning the 'instincts' to feelings."
I changed the scene again. This time I was sitting in a tavern at the bar. I wore a long black coat that hid my face and body entirely.
Me: "Perhaps that's it. But I refuse to listen to feelings anymore."
The tavern was full and all races were celebrating. I had killed a high level demon that was plaguing the city, with little effort. But I didn't celebrate with them, I was there to collect information for another quest.
Me: "Every person I met was just another NPC. Every problem, a quest, every hardship, a means to further the story."
I slowly walked around the tavern until I decided that was enough, and I manually shut down the simulation returning me to my lab.
Me: "And that's how it will stay."
