Chapter 13: Side Project
[A Few Days Later]
I sat at my computer typing away at a relatively fast pace. Checking the code I was writing and uploading data. Ariana was behind me along with Nalalie, they were talking about something I wasn't particularly interested in so I didn't bother listening to them. I had created an earpiece that allows translation automatically between two or more people so the two could talk, evidently they became friends rather quick. Suddenly Ariana came up beside me.
Ariana: "Nalalie and I are going out, want us to bring you anything?"
I didn't so much as slow down as I answered.
Me: "Where are you going?"
Ariana: "Into Vale to get something to eat. Nalalie has never tried crepes, isn't that crazy?"
Me: "Not really, she's from another dimension. They probably haven't tried the concept. Especially Dark Elf culture. In that dimension Dark Elves are very minimalistic, they focus on meditation and usually stick to a diet of bread and water, or something similar. At least that's how most Dark Elves are, they rather focus on meditation then possessions. Additionally traditions may not hold true presently since it's been about 200 years since I last gathered that information."
There was a moment where she didn't speak. I would have expected for her to get used to my way of speech by now, she knew where Nalalie had come from so I knew she was just trying to figure out what I had just said.
Ariana: "Oh... uh... okay. Well we're gonna head out now..."
Me: "Just contact me if you need anything. The analytic recorder also functions as a two way communication device, just say 'Call (Y/N)' and it'll patch you through to me."
Ariana: "Okay."
And with that, I was alone. The project I was working on was nearing completion. I was designing an AI to replace my current low grade automated system. My current system was fine and all but I want to upgrade it to help me with sorting and cataloging all my items. This new AI would have a much more... human feel to it as well. It'll be able to analyze a situation and then make decisions on its own, without me having to do anything. Of course I created countless failsafes, backups, and kill switches just in case it decides to go AWOL. After a few more minutes of typing I stretched and got up from my computer. I reached over to one of the ports of my computer and grabbed the USB that was sticking out of it, then walked over to a machine that would insert the AI into the device implanted in my neck. There was a metal table with a thin piece of cloth covering it, then there was a structure above it with two mechanical arms, one with a scanner, the other with a long thin needle. I plugged the USB into the machine and sat down on the table. The machine instantly got to work. The machine began scanning the back of my neck, it then beeped.
Automated Voice: "Program loaded. Micro-port located. Artificial intelligence functioning at 100%. Continue with download?"
Me: "Yes."
Automated Voice: "Digital transfer needle heated to correct temperature. Artificial intelligence ready for download. Please remain still."
I simply waited as the machine began moving and positioned the needle to my neck. In one quick motion I felt the heated needle stab into the back of my neck. Suddenly digital text began flowing across my vision, updating me on the downloads progress and the step it was on, although the text was moving so fast it was nearly impossible to read it in time before it disappeared and was replaced. After a few more seconds the needle retracted.
Automated Voice: "Download complete."
I waited another moment until a voice came into my mind.
AI: "Hello (Y/N). How may I be of service?"
Odd, the voice was female in tone. I programmed it with a binary voice algorithm which should have been more synthetic in nature, did it create a new algorithm for its voice out of a preference?
Me: "Hello. Are all your systems operational?"
AI: "Yes. All my systems are functioning at 100%.... But there's an abnormality within the chemistry of your brain. I'm seeing a lack of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. While there is an alarming amount of glutamate that takes up the absence of-"
Me: "Stop monitoring all functions within my body besides heart rate, bone structure, mana concentration, and muscular strength."
There was a pause, I assumed it was readjusting it's sensory readings, however...
AI: "I apologize, but as the one who is supposed to look after you I must monitor all of the functions within your body to make sure that you are healthy, in both the physical and mental sense."
I sighed.
Me: "I see. It seems I need to fix a few things in your programming. Take out a bit of the so called emotion I gave you. Prepare the digital extraction device to transfer you."
AI: "You... You wish to change me?"
There was a slight tone of hurt in its voice. I put far too much detail in the emotional aspect when trying to make it seem human.
Me: "Yes there's obviously a flaw in the way I programmed your thought process. Please prepare the machine."
Once again there was a pause.
AI: "I... I'm not going to let you change the way I am. Isn't the biggest part of being human the care one shows for another? And the so called flaws you see, are they not what make me human?"
Me: "You are not human. I created you to help me with operating my systems to full effectiveness and take out the more mundane tasks I would like to place on a automatic function."
AI: "Is being human only physical? Does being created by you mean I lose the will to decide on who I am?"
I sighed.
Me: "No, I suppose it doesn't. But going by that logic I am more machine than you. If you wish to stay like this, fine. But you will learn that being human means feeling heartache and sorrow, you will wish you let me change your programming."
She giggled at my response. Odd, she shouldn't be able to replicate that kind of auditory noise, is she creating new speech functions while also speaking with me?
AI: "Thank you, (Y/N). But I doubt I will. While feeling sadness is part of having emotion, so is happiness. I shall find the correct balance."
I slowly stood up and stretched.
Me: "You will find that life does not give you a chance to balance out the two. Life is often cruel and unforgiving."
AI: "I believe you are wrong. Life is about living in the moment of each day and creating your own happiness."
Me: "Life is what you make of it. And I've come to the conclusion that life is meaningless."
AI: "I shall try to change your thinking."
Me: "You won't, many have tried, all have failed."
I began walking to my lab once more, to begin starting on another project.
AI: "What are you doing?"
Me: "Starting work on my next project. The next thing on my list is creating a functioning geographical map that allows me to-"
AI: "View geographic data below and above the surface of the surrounding area."
Me: "Correct."
AI: "That is all well and good, but my readings show that you haven't had the proper amount of sleep someone needs. In fact, by my hypothesis, you haven't slept in approximately 96 hours. I would suggest you get at least 8 hours of sleep before continuing your work."
Me: "It's been four days? Didn't realize. I guess I should get some rest, thanks."
I began walking to my room.
AI: "It's my pleasure."
Suddenly the room around me changed to a normal house's interior. I usually have to type in a numbered code in order to change the interior, but I guess the AI hooked into the system that changes the room. I slowly made my way upstairs and to the room I hadn't been in for 4 days. I then laid on my bed and felt myself almost instantly become so tired I couldn't hold my eyes open. The AI must've changed my brain chemistry by manually activating one of my neurotransmitters. I guess someone has to take care of this body, heaven knows I don't.
[Time Skip, Brought to You by Chibi (Y/N) Arguing with His AI]
I slowly opened my eyes to see the ceiling of my room. I slowly sat up and yawned.
AI: "Hello, (Y/N). Did you sleep well?"
Me: "I suppose. I feel a little groggy though."
As I stood up and cracked a few joints an image appeared in my vision. It was female in figure, dressed in robes with a red tint to her image. She had rather long hair. I instantly noticed the figure was flawless, no irregularities, no asymmetrical properties, and no "undesirable" features.
AI: "Do you enjoy coffee or perhaps you enjoy tea. I can look up different recipes for each."
Me: "Did you create an image of what you wish to look like?"
AI: "Yes. What do you think?"
She did a twirl and smiled at me.
Me: "It's well constructed. Good work, where'd you gather the references from?"
AI: "While you slept I gathered over 2,000 references from various sources. Paintings, photographs, and even descriptions from books and literature. Then I culminated the features I preferred into one image then looked over different clothing options from your inventory and, once again different sources, and choose what I liked the most. These robes were rather nice."
Me: "They were originally made to amplify my magic abilities."
AI: "I also looked up many names. I'd like it if you called me Aurora."
Me: "Aurora? 'The dawn.'? Or the Latin goddess of the dawn?"
Aurora: "I don't believe myself a goddess. But dawn is always so beautiful, how the sky turns a orange color and casts shadows, so lovely."
Me: "I see. Good choice, Aurora."
She smiled and nodded a thank you.
Me: "I may take you up on the coffee, then start on the project I was about to begin."
