Chapter 20
Back to my bedroom in my bathrobe after taking a bath, I grab my phone on the comfy chair which faces my bed beneath the corner of my room, near the window. I used that moment to close my window to stop me from viewing the light coming from the next house.
My dream house is a place to wake up every morning to a beautiful lake or sea crest.
Here is an estate with mansions facing each other despite being on the island.
From there, I veer to grab an apple in a bowl placed on my desk, then I begin to check my WhatsApp messages.
My day started with the stress of attending two classes, following the fun I had with Karen, and ended with sadness with dad that I couldn't even eat dinner. What else can I say?
Unread messages from mom, Scott, and some of my folks are above Karen's but I choose to open her chat first. I can see she is online.
I hope you have gotten home.
I smile slightly at that and I take a bite from my apple, then continue to read her next chat.
And thanks for taking my power bank with you.
Oh shit! I mutter to myself. I can't remember taking it with me. I quickly reach for my cross bag and unzip it to see her power bank among my stuff.
Our conversations made me forget to return it to her while I was in a hurry when Chidi arrived to pick me up.
I laugh a little at myself and I lay flat on my stomach on my bed, before typing to reply to her.
I'm deeply sorry about that.
She begins to type immediately the two marks read blue.
Well, you are just making me want to charge at my neighbor's place.
Geez! I will charge the power bank here so that you can have it fully charged when you arrive here tomorrow morning.
Arrive there?
Of course. I'm sure the HM will email you as soon as possible
So you are serious about this?
Yeah, We are all expecting you tomorrow, Maria will be happy to have you back
Only Maria?
I scoff as she continues typing. What does she mean by that?
I'm turning down the offer. Thanks.
What the hell! The more I wanna fix things for her the more it's complicated. Do I have to beg her now to take back the job, despite hitting me? Though I also did worse by adding salt to the soup she prepared.
I sit up, holding a pillow on my lap.
Trying to think straight made me want to do a video call with her. I dial her number and in the next minutes, she picks up.
Where she is, is somehow dark but I can see she is not at home, with her phone camera changing direction indicating she is strolling around in her brown tank top while a warmer is worn on her head.
"Where are you?" I ask her.
"On my way to my neighbor's house," She answers, showing me her charger.
"Oh! so sorry," I react and she nods okay.
"Is that Michael?" I hear a tiny familiar voice in the background which sounds like her cousin Angela.
Suddenly Angela swifts her face to the camera and covers Karen's.
"Hi!" She greets, grinning.
"Hi, Angela. Thanks for today," I reply.
"You are welcome," She says and draws her head back, disappearing from the camera why Karen's face shows back, giving me a blank expression.
"So why do you want to turn down the job," I inquire and she rolls her eyes before giving me a response.
"You guys do not need me," She explains. "There are professional chefs out there that can work in that mansion with the qualifications and experience you guys are looking for,"
"Come on!" I react and she nods no in answer.
"Remember I lied to your dad about my degree, I can't just continue."
Well, that is not the only thing she lied about. I just don't want to bring up her granny's eatery turning to be a local fruit and vegetable shop. But all the same, she is still a great cook even better than some professionals. It might be her natural gift. Who knows?
"You know you are good at this right?"
"Of course and that is why I applied for the job in the first place." She answers and I exhale.
I shouldn't say what I want to spill out now but I have no choice.
"Do you wanna hear a story about your chef test," I say in my calm voice,
"Go ahead," She replies, her face gradually forming into a beautiful smile.
"Uhm, The moment my sister and I stepped into the kitchen that day, we saw some set of meals on the table, and guess what? Your meal attracted me the most. It was...just like...love at first sight..." I am saying and she giggles a little as she couldn't hold her laugh anymore while I continue,
"I was eager to get a taste of it and the moment I nibbled that yam flour accompanied the delicacy vegetables and shrimps, I wanted to finish everything. I asked the HM to choose the great culinary artist, not knowing it was you while Olivia chose the other guy." I express.
The light turns on in front of a bungalow revealing she has reached her destination. She blushes, displaying her rosy cheeks.
"Awnn! How romantic that was," I hear Angela say and my mouth agape in shock.
I have forgotten she is with Karen.
I can't believe I let out those words in her presence.
"Don't tell me you heard everything Angela,"
"Of course, I heard nothing but the romantic's lines of yours," She replies, not appearing in the camera.
Gosh! That was not even romantic at all. I try to tell myself that.
Karen chuckles, reacting to her cousin's response. Is she not going to say anything or
Has she begun to fall for me?
"So are you taking the offer now knowing that you are 100 percent qualified for the job?" I inquire.
She bites her lips which seems she is thinking of what to say.
"You have a test tomorrow morning, you should go study," She answers.
She reminds me of that and I silently groan.
Right, I have to study.
"Is that a yes answer?" I ask.
"Good night, I'm having a flat battery," She replies and hangs up on me.
Just like that? She doesn't even give me a straight answer despite how I tried to get her back. I scoff a little dropping my phone on the bed.
Now back to real life I can't run away. I reach for my pc and I unlock it to view the course outline.
Gosh! How am I supposed to jack all these topics in just one night? Those who say that exams and tests are the only things that spoil college are right.
I groan loudly, glancing at my ceiling before starting to read the first topic of the slides.
No sooner than my eyes begin to dim for sleep. What I am reading is not even getting into my head.
I should wake up at the midnight for this. I close my laptop, reach for my alarm and set it to midnight.
I place back my laptop on my reading table and switch off the bulb which makes my lamp illuminate the room.
Lying on my bed, my phone chimes for a notification. I check to see the name Angela Ademola sent me a friend request on Facebook.
I accepted immediately, smiling. How I wish Karen is just like her cousin. But she is giving me problems playing my game, I can't even read her.
