Chapter 10 - The Eye of Madness

In Canada...

Since the appearance of the large black prism with glowing spirals in the sky above the forest, a wave of terror and panic had unleashed throughout the city. Acts of madness and violence of all kinds were reported all over the neighborhoods, and increased dramatically, ranging from simple brawls to armed murders. The police, fire and hospital forces had been completely overwhelmed for a few hours. Several television stations had arrived, standing at a great distance from the forest and all the cameras filming relentlessly this huge triangular object which disrupted the climate in the surroundings, creating a growing maelstrom just above it.

A reporter, warmly dressed for the winter, her microphone in hand, was filmed and spoke live.

_ "It has now been four hours since the unidentified giant object appeared in the sky and still has not moved. However, since its appearance, the temperature has dropped abnormally, the animals have all fled the surroundings and a Murderous madness began in the city and its surroundings, extending as far as Toronto. The army has been dispatched to try to find out more about this object, but for many people it is. would act again as a menacing manifestation from the monsters who have elected homes near Oakville for several years now. We are staying live and will keep you updated as this story evolves ..."

Further out in the park towards the Monsterman Mansion, the situation was even more tense than it was a few hours ago. Mr. Lordi, Emily and the others had seen, as they unfortunately expected, trucks of the military forces from the base which was installed not far from the town. Equipped and armed soldiers, in whole groups, had crisscrossed the area, bringing with them heavy artillery like tanks. Magnum was there too, having arrived a few moments before the soldiers and having learned what had happened during the night.

Unsurprisingly, the military had surrounded the mansion and were all casting more than suspicious glances at the group of monsters. Some of them even showed anger but held back. Emily could see they looked at her the same way. She chose to ignore them, knowing all too well what it was like to feel judged for her choices, but as usual, fully assumed.

One of the soldiers, who arrived in a jeep, stood out from the others by his uniform decorated with several medals, his military cap, and the way in which the soldiers greeted him respectfully. The man, closer to his fifties than his forties, sported a firm gaze, graying mustache and a very clean shaven chin. Escorted by two men, he took a firm step towards Mr. Lordi who chose to stand before him, with Emily at his side, and also Awa, in her capacity as ambassador of the monsters. Meanwhile, Ox, Amen, Kita, and Magnum stayed near the manor gate, remaining on their guard and keeping an eye on the human soldiers. The tension there was so palpable it could be cut with a knife.

_ "I am Commander Justin Hopkins, I run the Omega base responsible for the protection and surveillance of this area." the man spoke, straight and hands behind his back, showing no emotion on his face.

_ "My name is Mr. Lordi, lord of Lapland and all monsters ..."

_ "I know who you are ..." added the commander in a cold tone. "... Your legend precedes you. We also know the names of the others, like you, Lady Awa of Paysant, you who claim yourself to be the ambassador of your people ... And you, Miss Emily ..."

_ "I am his one and true love." Emily said, coming to take Mr. Lordi's hand.

A few mocking and disgusted sneers were heard among the soldiers. Emily glared at them. Mr. Lordi also didn't like it, but chose not to let his anger get the better of him, managing to contain himself. Awa, meanwhile, showed a look of dismay at the narrow-mindedness displayed by these men.

_ "Um, yes ..." Hopkins said staying more than serious and clearing his throat before continuing. "In short, know that I have nothing against you, personally. My duty is to ensure the security and peace of my homeland and of my world. But since your arrival here, this security and this peace have been constantly threatened, like those two demon attacks that occurred two years ago, and where in each of them, a great number of our men have died!"

Lady Awa stepped forward to speak.

_ "Commander, know that we are sorry for the loss of all those brave soldiers who lost their lives defending their world. Contrary to what you may believe, we can understand this, because we ourselves have lost many of our own in absurd wars. Believe me, we only want peace between our peoples. "

Hopkins had let Awa speak but didn't seem to believe a word of what she was saying.

_ "This is not what I seem to see ..." said the commander then, pointing with his finger at the giant black prism which was floating several hundred meters away. "Since this monstrous thing happened, it's utter anarchy, and it's happening right where you are. I never believed in coincidences."

Emily couldn't bear to hear that anymore and stepped in, a step forward and her gaze fixed on the commander.

_ "How can you accuse them without any evidence?! They have more heart than you could never had! You haven't seen what we witnessed! All of us, without exception, are in great danger!"

_ "Emily is right, Commander ..." added Mr. Lordi to support her. "... This thing is not of our making. It exudes a power so great and ancient that I myself cannot explain it. We are facing a force totally unknown and beyond us all. So, s 'Please listen to your sanity and let join our forces for a chance to win, otherwise we are headed for utter annihilation."

Again, Hopkins listened but was not persuaded.

_ "It will not be necessary. We have already done everything we can to stop this threat." he said, and in the process picked up his walkie-talkie. "Titan Squad, go ahead!"

Emily and Awa gasped as Mr. Lordi, gritting his teeth, took a step forward.

_ "Commander, don't do that! Your men don't stand a chance!" growled the Monsterman.

But suddenly, the soldiers raised their weapons in the direction of the monsters, keeping them in their sights. Even Emily was targeted, to which Mr. Lordi stepped back and stood in front of her to protect her. Magnum had taken one of his alien weapons, just as Kita grabbed his katana in a defensive reflex, but Amen, calmer, motioned for them to do nothing. Ox growled in fury, clenching his fists and blowing smoke through his nostrils.

_ "You dare to point those ridiculous guns at me? I will ..."

But the minotaur was then stopped in his gesture by Awa who joined him, placing her hand on his arm and making him understand by her gaze that it was better not to try. Ox growled, but out of respect and for the feelings he had for her, resigned himself.

For her part, Emily, still with Mr. Lordi, was stunned and revolted by the attitude of the soldiers.

_ "Please don't intervene. We have permission to shoot you down if you try anything against us." Hopkins warned, taking binoculars to look towards the prism.

_ "You are making a huge mistake, Commander." Emily said in a last attempt, but was ignored by the military commander.

She clenched her fist, feeling so blocked, but felt Mr. Lordi's clawed but delicate hand come around her shoulder, like support. Their eyes met and shared the same dismay.

_ "We have to do something, Mr. Lordi..." Emily said, her throat tight.

_ "I know Emily, I know ..." Mr. Lordi replied, hugging her gently against him, feeling helpless in the face of what was happening too.

A rapid, deafening noise ripped through the air as a trio of fighter jets, presumably the Titan Squad, passed over the mansion and raced at full speed toward the prism. Sitting in his cabin, his face hidden under his air mask, the leading pilot spoke into his radio in conjunction with Hopkins' talkie.

_ "Commander, this is Titan Leader. Fast approaching towards the objective. Missiles ready. Target locked."

_ "Fire." the commander ordered without hesitation, his eyes peering through the binoculars.

Immediately afterwards, the three planes each fired four autoguided missiles which spun in groups at a breakneck speed until they all hit the prism head-on in unison, in a massive explosion whose wave was felt until manor. The soldiers expressed their joy at seeing the unknown and threatening object having been completely struck by the power of the missiles. But on the side of Emily and the monsters, silence and concern reigned.

The fire and smoke dissipated, and the prism still floated, not moving and not bearing the slightest mark on its surface. The joy immediately ceased in the ranks of the soldiers who stood speechless. Hopkins also couldn't believe it. Mr. Lordi and his group on the other hand showed no surprise, but really worried about what might happen next.

_ "No ... impossible ..." Hopkins hissed, shaking his head in denial. "Titan Squad, re-pass and shoot again!"

_"Roger." answered titan leader.

The fighters returned to the attack position, making a great U-turn in the sky and flying towards the target again. But as they approached, the prism began to come alive. The spirals on its surface glistened more and more, and it let out a powerful whirring louder and louder. A shockwave exploded from the prism, hitting the three fighter jets. In the second, Hopkins heard abominable howls going through the walkie-talkie, coming from the pilots' radios. The sound was saturated, but cries of fear mingled with howls of intense pain and hysterical laughter were heard, then terrible noises of mutilations, torn flesh and spurting blood ... Hopkins blood froze when he heard that.

The three planes took off in awkward and disorganized maneuvers, until they completely crashed and exploded in the forest.

In the military ranks, all stood frozen, confused, in front of what had just happened. Mr. Lordi, Emily and their friends were contemplating this too, but were more and more worried when they saw what happened next.

The surface of the prism in front of them began to open and pull apart like a giant automatic trap door. She unveiled a dreadful thing: a single giant eye, red, inhuman and injected with black veins, which did not blink at all and stared at them. As soon as she saw this, Emily was forced to look away, having felt a great headache take hold of her during the few seconds of seeing that giant eye. All the soldiers who watched the giant eye also had intolerable headaches, some screaming as they fell to their knees and held the sides of their heads, others completely losing their sanity, bleeding from the nose and eyes. and laughing hysterically. Hopkins, who had seen this, had the intelligence to look away too, but saw all of his men go mad and violent towards each other. Different symptoms occur to the monsters. They could look at the giant eye without going crazy, but felt completely overwhelmed, drained of their strength. Awa, more linked to the spiritual world than the others, however, began to still suffer from these headaches and these apocalyptic flashes exploding in her mind, supported by Ox and Amen.

Mr. Lordi let Emily join the rest of the group, ordering her to keep her eyes closed, and came over to grab Hopkins firmly by the shoulder.

_ "Commander, listen to me! Order the immediate withdrawal with all your forces!" The Monsterman yelled at him, losing his temper.

Hopkins barely looked at the Lord of the Monsters, his gaze confused and vague.

In the prism, the giant eye began to glow brighter and brighter, a strong concentration of red energy condensing around it. Seeing this, Mr. Lordi felt his heart leap in his chest, easily guessing what it meant.

_ "RUN NOW!" he roared at everyone, especially Emily and her friends and starting to run as fast as possible towards them.

An energetic red ray of colossal power was launched from the eye, and in barely a second, hit the column of tanks that were posted to the right of the mansion. All exploded in torrents of flames and were thrown into the air for about thirty meters. All the soldiers caught in the blast of the energy beam were completely pulverized, not even leaving their ashes behind. The ray's wave was so strong that it knocked everyone to the ground. What a devastating power, thought the monsters as they stood up, and seeing the monstrous damage ... About twenty tanks destroyed, about sixty human soldiers disintegrated, a whole patch of grass and trees, completely destroyed ... With one only ray!

_ "Retreat! Retreat, that's an order!" Hopkins started yelling into his walkie-talkie and started running as fast as possible, along with the few soldiers who had managed not to watch and keep their consciences, all the others continuing to slaughter each other in psychotic laughter or writhing in pain and madness on the ground.

"Fg'ha clect'z swug'heo kala zusq'eh viitra daed, Ycnarr'Orveh ... Fg'ha clect'z swug'heo kala zusq'eh viitra daed, Ycnarr'Orveh ..." again, these dark chants echoed with force in the forest, especially in the area around the prism.

The giant eye of the prism then turned its attention to the monsters, starting to focus a next ray.

_ "HE WILL SHOOT ON US!" roared Magnum.

_"OH SHIT!" Ox yelled, holding Awa against him.

Mr. Lordi, keeping Emily close and hiding her eyes under his cloak, concentrated on successfully opening a vortex with his power.

_ "ALL IN, QUICKLY!" he ordered.

Ox was the first to enter, taking Awa with him. Magnum then passed, supporting Kita who was still a bit injured and needed help. Amen entered, then finally came Emily and Mr. Lordi, who immediately closed the vortex once they passed, just before the second ray of the giant eye, much larger and more powerful than the first, came to completely sweep the area.
