Chapter 1: The Balancing Act
Maya stood in front of the full-length mirror in her design studio, adjusting the fabric of the dress draped over the mannequin. It was nearly midnight, but her mind was still racing with ideas. The upcoming launch of her new collection was just weeks away, and every detail had to be perfect.
She let out a tired sigh, rolling her shoulders as she glanced at her phone. A text from Jordan lit up the screen.
Jordan: You still at the studio?
She smiled to herself, knowing he was probably half-asleep but still making sure she was okay.
Maya: Yeah, just finishing up. I'll be home soon.
She set her phone down and turned back to the mannequin, but before she could make any more adjustments, a small yawn from the couch in the corner caught her attention. Noah, wrapped in one of her softest blankets, blinked up at her sleepily.
"Mommy, are you almost done?" he asked, his little voice thick with sleep.
Maya's heart softened. She had promised herself she wouldn't bring work home as much, but tonight, when Noah refused to go to bed without her, she had compromised by bringing him along. Jayden had already been fast asleep when she left, and Jordan had been finishing up a late-night film session for the team.
"Yeah, baby," she said, walking over and brushing his curls back. "Let's go home."
By the time she carried Noah inside the house, Jordan was waiting for her in the living room, dressed in sweats and a hoodie. His expression was equal parts amused and tired as he took in the sight of her balancing their sleeping son on her hip while juggling her bag and a garment bag in her other hand.
"You really took him to the studio?" Jordan asked, stepping forward to take Noah from her arms.
"He refused to go to sleep without me," she defended, watching as Jordan effortlessly cradled their son. "And he was an angel the whole time."
Jordan chuckled, shaking his head as he carried Noah upstairs. Maya followed, peeking into Jayden's room on the way. He was sprawled out in bed, his covers kicked off, his football tucked under one arm. She smiled before pulling the blanket back over him, then continued down the hall to their bedroom.
By the time Jordan joined her, Noah was tucked in, and the house was quiet again. Maya sat on the edge of the bed, rubbing her belly absentmindedly. The pregnancy was just starting to show, and while she was excited, the exhaustion was hitting her harder this time.
"You need to start slowing down," Jordan murmured as he sat beside her, his hand resting over hers on her stomach. "I know your collection is important, but so is taking care of yourself."
"I know," she admitted, leaning her head against his shoulder. "It's just a lot to juggle. The boys, the baby, my career... your career."
Jordan pressed a kiss to her temple. "We've figured it out before. We'll figure it out again."
She sighed, closing her eyes for a moment. "I just don't want to let anyone down."
He gently turned her face toward him, his expression serious. "Maya, you could never let us down. We're in this together, remember?"
She nodded, letting his words sink in. They had always been a team. No matter how crazy life got, they had each other.
And that was all they needed.
