Chapter Twenty | Kaylessa

After Kaylessa stopped the hail, she went to sleep immediately, preparing for the emotionally tiring day ahead.

She got up with the sun to shake her dad awake. She was still in her pajamas when she stormed into her dad's house and found him passed out on his couch with a spoon in his hand.

Kaylessa took the spoon away and gently shook him awake. He woke up with a grunt and rolled onto the floor. Kaylessa rolled him onto his back and saw that his closed eyes were red and puffy. She got a glass of water and spilled some on her dad.

He woke up gasping and when he felt the water trickling down his face he finally glanced at Kaylessa. He gave her a sheepish grin and wiped the water from his face. Groaning, he got up and gasped. He held tightly onto Kaylessa's arm as he fought his head rush.

"Dad?" Kaylessa asked. Elion looked at her. "Do you want to go to Atlantis?"

"Why not," Elion said, shrugging. "Let's go." Kaylessa glanced at his stained clothes and mussed-up hair.

"Maybe you should change and shower first," Kaylessa suggested. Her dad sniffed his shirt and sighed.

"You're right," he said as he stalked towards his bedroom. Kaylessa plopped down on the couch and waited for her dad. When he emerged from the bathroom, his hair was clean enough and he was wearing clean clothes so Kaylessa nodded. Good enough, she thought.

"Okay! Let's go!" Kaylessa said enthusiastically to get her blood pumping. Elion huffed, but grasped her arm and held on during the leap. Kaylessa wasn't sure if he was concentrating, so she wrapped her consciousness around him as well and leaped them to the shore.

The wind whipped at her hair and the tang of the saltwater filled her mouth. She opened up the secret rock cabinet and pulled out a bottle. She quickly tossed it into the brewing sea and a hurricane immediately erupted.

Before she could change her mind about the trip, she jumped into the swirling water knowing her dad would follow.

When she landed on the sponge, it stole all the water from her clothes and she quickly scrambled off before her dad could land on her.

When they were both dry, Kaylessa headed towards Claws, Wings, Horns, and Things near the canal front. Her dad trailed after her as she opened the storefront door. The bell on the door jingled merrily. She stepped into the stoor and banged into an elf.

"Ow," Kaylessa muttered as she rubbed her forehead. The elf she crashed into turned around and she saw it was someone from school.

He wore his hair slightly long with dyed silver tips. Shadows swirled around his feet as he glowered down at her.

"Hey, Tam!" Kaylessa said awkwardly.

"Hey, Kaylessa," he murmured. He reached up to tug on one of his bangs.

"What are you doing here?" she asked him. Tam pointed towards the counter where his twin sister, Linh was currently paying for a bag of murcat food.

"Oh," she muttered. Linh finished talking to the cashier and headed towards Tam. She stopped in her tracks when she saw Kaylessa and smiled.

"Kaylessa! What are you doing here?" Linh exclaimed. "It's so wonderful to see you!"

"I was just here to look at stuff," Kaylessa said, beaming back at her. Linh motioned to her bag of murcat food and pointed to the murcat section in the back.

"You should definitely get a pet murcat," Linh suggested. Kaylessa hummed in agreement.

"Well, see you at school!" Linh said, waving goodbye as she forced Tam to open the door as her hands were full.

"Bye!" Kaylessa told Linh and Tam. Her dad walked into the store as the twins left. He made his way towards Kaylessa.

"Did you want a pet?" her dad asked. He pointed towards the murcats. "They look cute."

Kaylessa shrugged, "Did you want one?" She watched her dad go up to a murcat and touch the glass. The murcat purred at the new person and Elion smiled. Kaylessa's eyes widened at the sight as she watches her dad open the glass door as he picked up the furry and scaly creature.

"Can I buy her?" Elion asked the store cashier. The cashier nodded as he scanned her dad's Treasury Cube. When Elion was by Kaylessa's side again, he was rubbing the murcat's stomach to make her purr.

"You can name her," Elion declared as he picked up some murcat food and bedding. As he paid for the items, the store cashier glanced at him, confused as to why he didn't just buy all the things at once. While her dad was paying for the food, Kaylessa petted the murcat her dad handed her.

"What should I name you?" Kaylessa asked the little feline. She purred as she rolled over in Kaylessa's arms to point a paw towards the 'Aquatic Animals' sign.

"Aqua?" Kaylessa asked her new pet. The murcat meowed. She smiled at the murcat when her dad came over with a bag over his shoulder.

"So, what's her name?" Elion asked her.

"Aqua?" Kaylessa suggested as she scratched the murcat's head.

Elion grinned, "Yeah! That's perfect! Let's go home to put Aqua's things away!" He quickly slung the bag off his right shoulder and onto his left to distribute the weight. Kaylessa cradled Aqua in her arms as she watched the large dome of air surrounding her.

This isn't exactly why we came, but it'll work, Kaylessa silently laughed. Aqua's purr filled the silent walk towards the center of Atlantis.

There was a crowd of people surround the statue of Keefe, Sophie, and Linh for saving Atlantis, where the Unity Fountain used to be. Kaylessa couldn't help laughing at the heroic poses the Black Swan members were in, considering she just saw Linh half an hour ago.

There was a big bang and a flash and suddenly black-cloaked figures were standing on the rim of the statue.

"Oh, geez," Kaylessa sighed. She recognized the slim build of Ruy near the statue of Keefe posing with his hands outstretched towards Sophie and Linh.

She heard a number of gasps in the crowd, especially as Linh and Tam pushed their way towards the front.

Gisela threw her hood back as she surveyed the growing crowd.

"Do you believe the Black Swan actually has done some good? They fired at us during an unprovoked attack and almost killed some of our members," Gisela cried out to the crowd. There were some murmurs of agreement, probably Neverseen members placed strategically around the crowd to have some elves who agree.

"They, who stole one of our members into cooperation with one of them as they broke off," Gisela yelled, pausing for dramatic effect. Kaylessa rose an eyebrow, Are they really gonna turn me into propaganda?

"This is why, we are here to stand against them, to save the world," Gisela said with a firm voice as a memory washed over Kaylessa.

. . .

Kaylessa was so angry. At the council, at the stupid world. Even her dad didn't escape some of her temper. Islaria had died a few weeks ago, and it was well past her planting that Kaylessa remembered an organization that was bent on overpowering the council.

At the time, it was the best thing she could hope for.

She followed a female Neverseen member as she wove through the streets of Lumenaria to find a group of cloaked elves arguing with each other.

"Um," she started lamely as all five heads turned towards her. She straightened under their glares as she told them, "I want to join the Neverseen." At those words, some of those invisible glares lightened up.

The girl and a boy griped her by the arms as they leaped her away to the middle of a jungle. She had argued her point to Gisela, the only non-hooded elf in a five-mile radius. After a long debate, Gisela allowed her to take the oath as she let Gethen, another member into her mind.

Gethen had deemed her worthy and she officially became a Neverseen member after saying the phrase, "I promise to do everything in my power to save the world."

. . .

Kaylessa watched as Gisela wordlessly gestured for Ruy to pull something out of his pocket. Metal cylinders the size of a fingernail were pulled out of his cloak pocket. Raven was mysteriously missing so Ruy held up the tubes as he threw a forcefield around the Neverseen members, bending around the statues.

"Oh, we're doomed," Kaylessa huffed as she yanked on her dad's arm to leave the blast zone. Raven had shown her the demo blasters to blast through stone and flesh. They had been larger at the time, but the cylinders were clearly Raven's work.

As she ran away from the scene with her dad in tow, she felt the reverberations as Ruy set of the blaster. Kaylessa was thrown into the air and for a second, she was weightless as she plummeted back onto the ground.

"Dad!" Kaylessa screamed as Elion started slowing down. She felt another round of blasters in the air as she practically dragged her dad towards the matchmaking office.

Hopefully, there was no death toll as she made sure Raven would never purposefully blow apart an elf.

When the black figures, distorted by the thick shield leaped away, she let her dad outside. Aqua, still clutched in her arms, meowed. She let her dad run after her as she made her way to the blast site.

There were many elves on the ground moaning. Some elves were even thrown against the building walls.

Kaylessa knew the Neverseen didn't plan this, but it was just retaliation for Kaylessa quitting. They would be after her soon once they realized her betrayal.

Her dad latched on to her arm as he led her away to the bubble machine to leave Atlantis. There already was a line forming around the exit and when it was their turn, they silently floated to the apex of the bubble trip and leaped back to Ambercrest.
