Chapter 9

Just like I had dropped Garrett, Darren seemed to have dropped Nicole. He never talked about her, and instead of looking embarrassed when I asked about her, he simply shrugged.

Well, I thought I had dropped Garrett. But somehow he managed to slip through the cracks in my life again, and for longer than he had last time. He had caught me on my way to class one time. He hesitated for a second.
"Can we- Can we, um, maybe hang out during school again sometime? I mean, if you say no, I totally get it. I'm sure you and Darren are kinda, well-"
Hearing about me and Darren made me make a quick decision.
"I'd love to!" I exclaimed more excitedly than I really felt.
He stopped abruptly from scratching his head nervously and his eyes widened.
"Wait, you actually-"
"Sure! Why not?" I answered. Truth was, I just wanted people to stop talking about Darren and I like we were a thing. And I don't know- Garrett might could end up to be a good friend of mine.
He looked at me and a wide smile broke across his face.
"Cool! So, talk to you at lunch?" he asked hopefully and doubtfully.
"Yeah, okay," I answered and headed off to class in a rush. I had gotten myself in another tight situation.

At lunch, I decided to maybe ask a few questions about him. I didn't want it to end up like last time.
"Hey!" he said excitedly. He acted like it was some miracle I had even shown up.
I smiled back at him and sat my stuff down. Garrett just waited patiently. When I finally sat down, I was prepared to ask him some questions, but he interrupted me first.
"Tell me about you," he said, smirking lightly.
I shrugged.
"Well, I live out in the country," I began slowly, not quite sure what to say, "I hardly ever watch television. Mostly I'm outside. I don't really care for sports, but I like to shoot basketballs occasionally when I'm bored. I listen to plenty of different songs that are slower and different from most modern-day music," I added and nodded once. He looked at me with a big smile on his face.
"What about you?" I asked.
Garrett hesitated before he began.
"I like sports, but I'm not a huge fanatic or anything like that. And, as I mentioned before, I like reading and nerdy television shows. I do like music a lot surprisingly. I listen to modern-day mostly, but that's only because I haven't been shown any better music," he finished. I smiled slightly. This guy seemed great, but I couldn't stereotype him. I didn't know whether this frustrated me more or made me more interested.
