Chapter Seventeen
Y/n's P.O.V.
Klaus and I were reading through the small book of codes, trying to find out if members of V.F.D. left a message for anybody who showed up at the burnt headquarters. We kept looking for anything that could help decode where they could be. "Y/n, come here, I think I found something," Klaus called out. I walked over to the burnt kitchen, and I saw him at the fridge.
"What did you find?" I asked. "Verbal Fridge Dialogue," he answered. I was confused, and I asked him to repeat himself, thinking that I was just imagining things. "If you were in a building about to be burnt down, and you had to protect something, where would you hide it?" Klaus asked. "A safe?" I guessed. "Close, assume you didn't have time to open the safe,"
"The fridge?" Klaus nodded, and we looked through the fridge together. "Verbal Fridge Dialogue, it's a code used in emergency situations. If you can't send a message, you leave one using the items you find in the fridge," he explained. "Check this out, 'the darkest of the jams of three contains the sender, look and see' the poem means that the name of the person sending a message is in the darkest jar of jam. The darkest jam is boysenberry,"
He pulled out a jar full of Boysenberry, and I saw the initials J.S. "But, how's that possible? Jacques Snicket is dead," I said. "That's not the only thing that's strange about this message, 'Gatherings use a cured fruit-based calendar, and location can be divined via any spice-based condiment,' J.S. is calling a meeting for the whole organization of V.F.D. the number of olives is the day of the week it is," Klaus went on to explain.
He pulled out a small jar with a few olives inside of it. "One for Sunday, Two for Monday, so it would be Thursday, if the message was left during the fire, then the gathering is less than a week away," I said putting the pieces together. "But where is it?" Klaus pulled out a jar of what appeared to be mustard. "Look at the ingredients, Vinegar, mustard seed, salt turmeric, the Last Safe Place, if we find the Last Safe Place, we can find V.F.D," he said.
Klaus closed the fridge and we decided to keep reading through the books of codes to pass the time until Violet and Quigley came back. I kept staring at the waterfall wondering if they had made it to the top yet, and if they did, I hoped they wouldn't get themselves caught. "Y/n, are you okay?" Klaus asked. I looked over at him and saw that he had a look of worry spread across his face. "No, I just hope that Quigley and Violet are doing alright up there," I sighed.
"I saw you and Quigley embrace each other before they left, I don't mean to pry when I ask you this, but do you like him?" he asked. I didn't know how to respond to that question, even though Klaus seemed like a good person, I just didn't feel comfortable telling him about my crush on Quigley. "I have no idea what you are talking about," I said. "Don't lie to me, it's obvious you like him, the way your cheeks turn bright pink when you talk about him, I saw them turn pink when you mentioned how you two have been through a lot," he teased.
"Okay, your right, I like him, but you have to promise not to tell a single soul," I begged. Klaus gave me a mischievous grin, and after about a moment of staring into the depths of his soul, he said he wouldn't tell anyone. "Good, now let's get back to work," I smiled.
