Chapter Fifteen
Y/n's P.O.V.
There was an awkward silence between the four of us for a moment, How did this girl know about the Quagmires? Have they met Duncan and Isadora? "Your Quigley Quagmire, and you're Y/n L/n," the girl said breaking the awkward silence. "We heard you perished in a terrible fire," the boy added. Quigley and I shook our heads and slightly smiled. "No, we survived, we were in the kitchen with Quigley's mother, and she smelled the smoke and she led us down a passageway while she went upstairs to get the rest of the family," I explained.
Quigley let out a small sigh as we looked back on what happened. "But, she never came back, and we followed the passage to a house that belonged to a man named Montgomery Montgomery," he added. "Our Uncle Monty lived there," the girl gasped. "Nobody lives there now, we stayed there for a few days until we found out that Duncan and Isadora had been kidnapped, and we've been looking for them ever since,"
"This place was our last hope of finding Duncan and Isadora," I sighed looking around the burnt library almost bringing me back to the moment Quigley and I walked through the remains of my former home. But, I was brought out of the flashback when I heard the words, "Duncan and Isadora are safe," my eyes grew wide as I looked at Quigley wondering what happened and how they escaped Olaf's clutches.
"How do you know?" Quigley asked. "They're our friends, we're not sure where they are but they are safe, they escaped Count Olaf in a self-sustaining hot air mobile home," they explained. I let out a sigh of relief knowing that they were safe, I looked over at Quigley and smiled, he smiled back at me, and we knew that part of our mission was complete.
"We were hoping to find one of our parents up here, but we're glad we found you," the girl smiled. "We'll find Sunny, you saved my siblings, Baudelaires. Let us help you save yours," Quigley smiled. We looked around the burnt remains of the library keeping an eye out for any books that contained information that could be useful for us. Klaus and I looked through the right-hand side of the library while Violet and Quigley looked for materials we could use to rescue Sunny.
"So, how long have you know Quigley?" Klaus asked as I carefully poked through the shelves looking for books that we were unharmed. "We've known each since we were babies, we've been through everything together," I answered. "I don't mean to pry, I'm just curious, did you lose your family in a fire?" I looked back at him wanting to explain what happened, but the words could not come out.
"I lost my father in a fire, but my mother and sister died of cancer and suicide," I briefly explained. Klaus's face fell after I explained what happened. "I'm so sorry, no one should have to go through that," he said. "Guys, you might want to see this," Quigley called out. Klaus and I walked over to the small burnt deck outside, we looked up at the frozen waterfall, and we saw green smoke.
"It's a Verdant Flammable Device, V.F.D. uses them for sending signals," Quigley explained. "So it could be someone from V.F.D. or it could be Sunny," I suggested. "We have to get up there and save her," Violet said as she kept staring at the green smoke. "It's a long way to the top, we have to go back through the Vernacularly Fastened Door, down the Vertical Flame Diversion, and hike the same route the snow scouts are-" Before I could finish my sentence, Klaus interrupted me saying that there had to be a different way to the top, but as far as I knew, there was no other way.
"Look at the waterfall," Violet said, I had no idea what was going on inside her head, but I knew that whatever she was thinking, it was worth giving it a shot. Then, suddenly, the smoke went out. "Maybe the Verdant Flammable Device burnt out, or maybe the person got caught," Quigley suggested. We looked around the burnt headquarters looking for materials that could help us get to the top of Mount Fraught, all I could find was a few burn candelabras and a few damaged forks.
"Guys, I salvaged these from the rubble, see the names?" Violet said. she brushed away some of the ash, and I saw the name Dr. Toronado, I had heard of that name before, but I never knew what she did, or that she was affiliated with V.F.D. She pulled out another object, and I saw the name, C.M. Comstock. "Mother gave me her book on female pirates," Klaus pointed out. "I know, that's where I learned the Devil's Tongue Knot," Violet smiled. Then, we saw a typewriter with someone's initials on it, L. Snicket.
"Quigley and I read his book on maps and his tutorial on the accordion," I said when Violet and Klaus asked who L. Snicket was. Violet got to work on an invention, tying up her hair to keep it out of her eyes, and we all watched as she made an incredible invention. When she was done, it looked like snowshoes that could pierce the frozen ice of the waterfall. "It's time for a durability test," she said. I kept my fingers crossed hoping that this invention would work. We watched as she stuck the snow show into a small piece of burnt wood, and it was stuck there, proving that her invention worked.
While Violet and Quigley were working on the second pair of snowshoes, Klaus and I continued looking through the library hoping to find something that could help us crack V.F.D. codes. While I was looking through the poetry section, I found a slightly burnt book that was slightly covered in ash with the word "Codes," written in gold lettering. Klaus and I brought it to Violet and Quigley and explained what we found.
"V.F.D. has a secret way to leave coded messages in case of fires, there might be a message hiding here now," Klaus explained. "Then somebody needs to find it, Quigley, how are you at cracking codes?" Violet asked. "I can try, but I'm better at reading maps," he answered. Even though I was the first person to climb to up Vertical Flame Diversion, I knew that Quigley was better at climbing as well as reading maps. "You're better at climbing too," I added.
"Okay, you can help by saving Sunny, Y/n and I will stay here and see what we can learn," Klaus said. I nodded, knowing that we all had a plan. "Okay, we'll back, and we'll bring back Sunny," Quigley said. Quigley and Violet put the snowshoes on, and as they were about to walk out to the frozen waterfall, I gently grabbed his hand. "Quigley, if things go south up there, I want you to know that you are the best friend I could ever ask for," I whispered. He smiled at me and gently ran a hand through my hair.
"Everything will be okay, don't worry about me, its you who I'm worried about," he smiled. We lightly embraced each other, and we went our separate ways hoping that everything would go according to plan.
