39: The Regal Lady
"Ah... Ow ow ow..." Wei Wuxian woke up mumbling. He found himself lying in his husband's lap. Golden relieved eyes stared back at him. "A-Zhan?"
"A-Ying's in pain?"
"Ah... no-no," Wei Ying mumbled as he subconsciously hammered the side of his head, then shouted out. "OUCH!"
"Didi, don't do that, it's blue already."
"Nah, it's nothing. A-Cheng, thank you," he nodded to his brother.
Jiang Cheng silently nodded back, with a wide grin. He was clearly reminded of good old days. Back when he'd hit Wei Wuxian and Wei Wuxian would hit him back. But the Wei Wuxian now, drowning in his ruefulness and contrition, would probably never hit Jiang Cheng again.
"Ge, the Seal?"
"Right here," Lan Xichen held up a pouch shimmering with his own spiritual energy sealing it up.
"It's done already?" Wei Wuxian's eyes widened.
Xichen nodded. "After didi was knocked out, the spirit that left returned to surround the Seal. It was too much for the Seal; the Seal just burst. It's in pieces now."
"All dust," Lan Wangji nodded.
Wei Ying nodded. "Good. I'll call Wen Qing then?"
"Wei Ying is tired. I'll do it."
Wei Ying nodded. He slowly sat up and shook his head, shaking off the discomfort. He straightened his back and shuffled to Lan Zhan's side, leaning on him as Lan Zhan brought out Wangji.
Lan Xichen and Jiang Wanyin sat on the grass beside the duo, waiting for Wen Qing to arrive. It took quite some time before a worried voice replied to Lan Wangji's calls.
"Second Young Master Lan?"
"Young Mistress Wen, hello."
"Hello! What is it this time–? Wei Wuxian! What has he done to his head? Why is it swollen and blue? Who hit him?"
"Sheesh, A-Qing calm down! It's nothing, really," Wei Wuxian asked.
"You can see me? Shouldn't it be the summoner only?" She looked at Lan Wangji.
"I can see all spirits," Wei Wuxian tossed his hair back.
Wen Qing rolled his eyes. "Right, you're the Yiling Laozu. Pardon me," she smirked at him. "Now what happened?"
"A-Qing, we need you to hide one more thing." Wei Wuxian took the pouch from Lan Xichen and gave it. Neither Lan Xichen nor Jiang Cheng could see Doctor Wen, but could understand things from what Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji were saying.
Before Wen Qing took the pouch, Lan Xichen waved his fingers to remove the spiritual seal. As before with the comb, Wen Qing could easily handle the pouch. She took it and opened it to see its contents. "Oh? Stygian rock powder?"
Wei Wuxian nodded. "Dust of the Stygian Tiger Seal."
Wen Qing beamed. "I knew you could do it."
Wei Wuxian's heart melted at her words. Wen Qing spun around and disappeared for a few minutes. She returned with the pouch in hand. "Here. It's empty. The powder, it's buried there."
Wei Wuxian handed the Qiankun pouch back to its owner and turned back chuckling. "What if it grows into a plant? A-Zhan, what do you think it would be–?"
"It's not A-Yuan," Wen Qing sneered. Wei Wuxian put out his tongue at her, and she made faces. The two proceeded such for some time before bursting out laughing. Even Lan Zhan was smiling.
"Alright alright, now tell me what happened to your head?"
"Such a doctor, Wen Qing," Wei Wuxian chuckled. "My head's fine–"
"Of course it's not. You wouldn't be Wei Wuxian if you head was fine and sane." Ignoring Wei Ying's gasps and childish protests, she turned to Jiang Wanyin. "That idiot hit you right?"
Wei Wuxian gaped at her. "H–How did you guess?"
Wen Qing huffed. "As if these two will ever be able to smack your head. Sadly, even a hit like that didn't fixed your loosened screws. Second Young Master Lan?"
"Mn?"
"How bad was the hit? What did he hit with?"
Lan Wangji nodded to Jiang Wanyin. Wen Qing gave him a once-over and saw the white flute still in his hand. "What! How do you have Liebing?"
"Why?" Wei Wuxian asked.
"Isn't Liebing Zewu-Jun's flute? Isn't it his spiritual tool? How come..." Wen Qing's question trailed off as she grinned.
Slowly, but surely, understanding dawned on Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan's eyes widened in surprise. Wei Ying turned to look at his brothers and gift them with a wicked grin.
The two exchanged glances. Neither knew what was going on, but it sure wasn't good.
"What?"
"Oh, nothing, A-Cheng. A-Qing was just asking how you can hold Liebing?"
"And why the hell do you deem it impossible?"
"Oh, just because... Xichen, gege, isn't it your spiritual tool? None but Lan Zhan," and Meilien, but he'd ignore that for now, "can handle my Chenqing. And only I can touch Bichen." The grin grew wider with each word.
Jiang Cheng's eyes widened in horror. His face turning maroon, he shoved Liebing to Xichen and looked away.
Lan Xichen, on the other hand, was staring at his friend. A hint of a smile was discernible enough to make Wei Ying snigger.
"See?" Wei Ying bent forth to touch Liebing: he was pushed backwards, right onto Lan Zhan's lap. Lan Zhan, still in disbelief, followed his husband's steps, and received the same treatment. "It won't even accept his brother!" Wei Wuxian couldn't stop laughing at his shidi's grape of a face.
Lan Xichen was even more amused. My Liebing accepted him? Hm! Guess I do have a chance...
Wen Qing shook his head at the scene. "I'll take my leave then," she nodded to Lan Wangji.
"A-Qing, take care. This might be the last favour."
"You too, Wei Wuxian. But if you need anything more, I'm always here. Be a good husband and brother, yes? Your sister didn't come all the way from the Other Realm to help heal you just to see you sacrifice yourself again, alright? Don't let us Wens' sacrifice go in vain." With that, she flew away.
"Wait, A-Qing!" But she was gone. He whispered under his breath to the others, "Did she just say 'sister'?"
They nodded with smiles.
"A-Xian, I'll be going back, it's almost noon now."
"Now that everything's over," Lan Xichen spoke, "we better announce the news to the world, to eradicate all fears. Wanyin, send a message to Huaisang and I'll tell Jin Ling. We'll meet up with the other clan and sect leaders, spread the news to them."
Jiang Wanyin, though still red and not daring to look at the taller's face, nodded. While Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen bid the two others goodbye, both promising to send medicine and food right away, Lan Zhan picked up his husband and carried him home.
Lan Zhan laid him on the bed. "A-Zhan, if you're still fresh, would you mind coming here?"
Lan Zhan climbed onto the space beside Wei Ying and lay down. "What is it?"
"Nothing, just tired. All that energy... I felt so complete. But now it's all gotten rid of, I feel half-alive. A-Zhan, shall we sleep? Let the others teach for today."
"Two days."
"Hm?"
"We should have come out the day after tomorrow. So all of today and tomorrow, you'll sleep. Recover."
"And you?"
"Like I promised. Right here." Lan Zhan pulled his fragile husband into his chest and cuddled him. Wei Ying, comforted by the love and spiritual energy Lan Zhan was pouring onto him, snuggled up, body curled like a baby, and dozed off.
**********
By the time the two woke up, exactly two mornings later, they felt alive and afresh. The two got out of bed and sat at the table. Lan Zhan reached into the hidden cabin underneath the floorboard and brought out a jar of wine.
"Emperor's Smile?" Wei Wuxian grinned as he took the jar.
Lan Zhan nodded.
"Will you have some too, A-Zhan?"
Lan Zhan shook his head: he knew too well what would ensure that.
"Oh? What are you drinking?" Wei Ying asked, staring at the jug Lan Zhan took out from a shelf nearby.
"Green tea."
"Oh. Then me too." Wei Wuxian put the wine jar back inside and took the jug from Lan Zhan. Pouring out the tea into two cups, he grinned. "Why should I have alcohol when all A-Zhan's having is green tea? Plus, I've got to teach those little Lans today!"
Lan Zhan smiled and nodded.
While the two sipped their tea, Wei Ying said, "A-Zhan, I saw this weird dream."
"Me too."
"Huh?" Wei Ying stared. "Really?"
"Mn. But Wei Ying go first."
"Well..." Wei Ying smiled as he remembered the strange dream.
**********
Brightness. Surroundings with a soothing blend of gold, white and pink. An occasional spot of blue or purple. What were all these colours? Wei Ying wondered as he squinted to see things clearer.
It was a garden. A massive garden. Yards and acres of cherry blossom. Isn't this how the books say Dongying looks? Am I there?
A gentle breeze blew his hair to a side. Soft pink and white petals of cherry blossom floated down onto Wei Wuxian as he stood in the garden. Wei Wuxian beamed up at it all before looking around again.
Pastel pink cherry blossoms.
Sapphire blue gentians.
A beautiful large pond, its crystal clear water shimmering in the strange golden light. Its surface was adorned with lotuses: amethyst purple, diamond white and kunzite pink.
A stream of water trickled through the garden, past Wei Ying's feet, producing an almost inaudible trickle. The river was occasionally lined with white quartz lilies.
Every last one of them resembled a jewel, a treasure, shimmering in the sunlight. The recalling of the sunlight made Wei Wuxian look up at the sky.
Wait a minute, where was the Sun? The sky was all bright and blue, but where was the Sun?
"The Sun is quite far away," a stern voice echoed.
In flew another draught as that voice reached Wei Ying's ears. From the depths of the cherry blossom orchard came a tall figure. Tall, domineering. Fair, beautiful. Golden eyes twinkling, meaningful and wise. Hair long, floating behind the pillar-like back. Robes, white with a touch of occasional gold. Aura... frighteningly majestic.
"Wei Wuxian?"
Wei Wuxian blinked. Did he know this woman? "Er... do I know you?"
The regal lady chuckled. "No, not yet. Pleased to meet you at last, Wei Wuxian. I'm Guanyin."
"Gu–Guanyin? Goddess of Mercy?"
She smiled. "Bright skies, looks like most of the trouble in your world is over. Good job with that Seal thing, by the way. Oh, as for your question, the Sun is well far away, lest it should burn our eyes."
Wei Wuxian stared. My world? Burn their eyes? "Erm... Goddess Guanyin, may I know exactly where I am?"
"My home. This is my garden. I saw you admiring it, like the lotuses? I believe you're used to them."
Her home? This was the Heavens? Oh no, had something happened? Why was he in Heaven? Shouldn't he be with A-Zhan... Well, not much of a difference, Wei Ying grinned to himself. "Yes, I come from a place full of lotuses. Goddess Guanyin, may I ask... how do you know me?"
Goddess Guanyin nodded. "Suffice to say, your deeds are that courageous." Wei Wuxian blushed. "And it's not just me." She waved her hand.
Suddenly, Wei Wuxian's surroundings changed. He was now seeing ruby and onyx, sporadically emerald. He sensed the demonic energy. Spirits, ghosts, ghouls, demons, everything. All things evil and dark were here. And they where cheering. Wei Wuxian couldn't see who were present but could only see and sense the red and black environment, and hear the shouts and whoops. The Ghost Realm was celebrating.
Another swish behind Wei Wuxian and the setting changed once more. This time, he landed in a space of wholesome white. He could see nothing, but once again, heard much. More merriness.
Guanyin waved her hand to return the two of them to her orchard. "See, they're all celebrating. Your rise. Your victory."
Wei Wuxian blinked again. There seemed to be something in what she was saying. The Ghost Realm and Heavenly Realm were commemorating his victory? But why?
"Goddess Guanyin, may I know why I'm here?"
Guanyin turned to him with a serious look. "You're here because..." she sighed. "I've heard your pleas, your worries, your cries. But what was your fate wasn't mine to undo. In order to make amends, but more because you deserve it, I shall give you one gift."
"Gift! Goddess, please don't–"
"Wei Wuxian, you have done well. Far better than any of us expected. You're special. Extremely special. You deserve the highest honours, for persevering, for enduring, for sacrificing, for bringing peace. Great job," she patted him on the shoulder before turning away. She halted and spun back to face Wei Wuxian. "Almost forgot!" She waved her hand, conjuring a bundle of plucked herbs. "Here, make a tea out of it. The wounds on your back and your core need healing. Not to mention, your soul," she smiled softly at him. "As for the gift, this is not it. But you'll receive it in due time. Farewell, Wei Wuxian. It was a pleasure to see you."
One last swish and a rapid wind blew past Wei Wuxian, wiping away the scenery and returning him to darkness.
**********
"So yes, that's pretty much what I saw." Wei Wuxian dug into his sleeve and pulled out the bundle of herbs and placed it on the table. "Strange, huh? And you? Did A-Zhan see the same thing?"
"No. Different."
"Oh? How different was it?"
"A bit. Still related to Wei Ying's success. Still had the gift part. But the explanations were different. And I didn't see the two Realms. I didn't see Guanyin."
"Huh? Not Guanyin? Then who did you see?"
Lan Wangji reached into his own sleeve and placed a jar on the table. Wei Ying opened it and sniffed at its contents. "What? Wine? But it's fragrance..."
"Ambrosia."
"Wow. A-Zhan, exactly who did you see?" Wei Ying asked, his silver eyes round with wonder.
Lan Zhan smiled softly. He walked with Wei Ying to the verandah, still smiling and stopped outside. He stretched his jade neck and looked up at the sky. Wei Ying followed his gaze to a bright, shimmering full moon.
"Chang'e."

A/N: A few explanations.
Dongying = Japan, in case anyone forgot from Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen saying it in the drama.
Guanyin = Goddess of Mercy. Tends to be considered a bodhisattva too, but the meaning I'm using here is the Mercy Goddess part alone.
Chang'e = Goddess of the Moon. Now, this is interesting. If you don't know, it's fine! I'll be explaining next chapter! [Suspense can be intolerable so you could always Google it, totally cool!]
