Chapter 16 - Two truths and a lie

Evelyn's POV

I wore nothing but hoodies and sweatpants for two weeks. I wanted to disappear every time I walked through the school doors. The girls did what they could to make me feel better and the video was off the internet, I'm sure it helped that I looked so different when it had all gone down in the video. Yet, to me, I felt so vulnerable because I knew.

Regardless life moved forward, and I wasn't going to be the only one stuck in the past. I see Cody make his way up to me while Ashton is getting me a coffee at the college cafe. Cody's ginger hair and light eyes are happier than ever.

"Bonfire this week??" Cody asks raising his eyebrows. I frowned.

"How do you know about the bonfires??" I ask him. He grins and shrugs.

"Damien and Allison told me about them, they sound cool come on!! Can I take a few friends I haven't been to a bonfire in forever and it's freezing out. It'd be sick." Cody begs putting his hands together in front of him. I roll my eyes.

"Let me talk it over with Ashton alright? It's tradition, I got to make sure." I give him a friendly smile and a pat on the back before making my way over to my gorgeous boyfriend.

When I walk up to him, he hands me my coffee and I smile at him, getting lost as usual in my favorite pair of eyes. But his eyes don't meet mine.

"What's wrong?" Is the first thing I ask, from what I remember last time I saw him with that expression on his face it nearly tore us apart. That's when I see Sarah and Allison giggling by the little tables to the far left of the cafe. I hold my breath and count to ten. 1....2.....3......

"They made a gossip page, for the college. I don't know who runs it, but it's bad." He says. I scoff, who the fuck cares at this point.

"Frankly Ashton, I don't care, and if I don't care neither should you. When you give those things attention it just fuels the fire even more. If we ignore it, they get bored and move on to the next thing." I say, annoyed. I place my hand on his arm, but he pulls away and that hurts more than a physical blow could have.

"Yeah, well look at it first, and then let me know if I have a right to feel the way I do or not." He says with a wounded look in his eyes. Then he just walked away from me, and I couldn't believe that. I see Jax going up to Ashton and Ashton just blatantly ignores him, but not before giving him a death glare.

"What the hell?!" Jax scoffs, looking at me perplexed. I throw my hands up in the air, removing the hood of my sweater from my head.

"Some fucking gossip page? What could've gotten him like that? A gossip page out of all the things? As if it was the national news or something." I say, astonished.

Jax pinches the spot in between his eyebrows with two fingers as he shakes his head. His chocolate, brown eyes were full of worry for his friendship. He pulls out his phone, pulls up his social media, and searches our school's name with the word "gossip" in front of it. Our eyes go wide at the picture that pops up and the caption above it.

"How the fu-"I start to say but he cuts me off.

"Your birthday party. How didn't we see someone behind us what the fuck." He asks himself.

It was a picture of us on the night of my birthday party, I was wearing my navy dress and my black and blue mask and he was wearing his suit and his mask. The problem was in the picture you could see from the side, a man looking like he was caressing a girl in that same blue dress I was wearing that night. It was us and Ashton in the back looking upset. The caption read "Seems like Jax is always there to comfort our girl, Evelyn. And poor Ashton is always too little too late."

Fuck. That's when Jax was running his fingers down my arm and I thought it was Ashton, my rooftop. How? How did this even happen? I run my hands through my hair, are people seriously this fucking bored?!

- - -

I make my way to my next class and Sophie sits next to me, as I get strange looks from all sides.

"Who else was on the rooftop with us that night that I couldn't have seen??"I whisper to Sophie. She looks at me with pity at the non-stop events that have taken place in my life. She shakes her head but then squints her eyes at the ceiling as if she's thinking.

"Could it have been Nicky??" She asks wide-eyed. I gasp at the thought, oh my Gosh. Could it have been her? She wouldn't... Unless that was her plan all along, cause problems between Ashton and me and end up fucking him.

- - -

The day passes by in a haze, and I try to find Ashton after my classes are finished, I'm tired, I'm angry and I miss him. The discomfort I feel even knowing he's slightly upset at me, nonetheless, is awful. I sigh to myself, walking through the hallways of the second floor, making my way to the elevator when I feel someone grab my arm and pull me into what seems to be a janitor's closet. It would be pitch black in here if it wasn't for the dim, orange glow lighting Ashton's features.

"Babe?" I say looking at him confused as to why we are in a closet. I look at his eyes and swallow nervously as he places a hand on my waistband. He smirks and I notice his lip's part.

"I have an idea." He says, looking at me with mischief in his eyes. I raise my eyebrows, intrigued all of a sudden by his mood swings.

"Let's invite everyone that was there the night of your party to the bonfire tonight. I know we don't know exactly who went but your parents do because they made the guest list, and everyone in the neighborhood council brought their kids which would be a lot of the people that come to this school. I'll take it from there." He explains still running his fingers over my waist.

"Well, what's your plan exactly?" I ask tracing the veins in his arms with my fingertips absentmindedly.

"We're going to play two truths and a lie and see who slips up first. Games make people nervous." He says as he places a kiss on my lips and then my neck. My cheeks start burning and I squeeze his arm. I kiss him back, placing my hand behind his neck. He pulls my hips into him.

"You wouldn't dare fuck with someone else while being with me, right?" He whispers, squeezing a soft spot above my hips. I let out a sigh of unspoken pleasure, a little shocked at the question.

I shake my head, no, eyes closed. I feel his fingers grab my chin and push it upwards so that I'm looking straight into his eyes.

"You're mine, not Jax's, not anybody else's, mine." He whispers. Immediately, I know I should be confused but I'm not. I'm more turned on than anything. He drops to his knees, and I lock the door not even thinking twice. He looks at the doorknob I just touched and back at me with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. He pulls my sweats down and runs his fingers over my thighs, placing kisses all down my inner thighs. My chest rises and falls from the pleasure-filled bubble I'm stuck in.

"I want it." I gasp.

"What do you want?" He asks innocently.

"Your-" I start to say, and we're disrupted by someone trying to open the closet door. My heart drops and Ashton pulls up my sweats as I try not to burst out laughing. He puts his hand over my mouth, and I squeeze my eyes shut as if that'll help me be quiet. Right now, I'm just hoping that if it is the janitor trying to open the door that he has to walk away somewhere to get the keys.

- - -

We managed to escape the janitor's closet unscathed, I shook my head as I grabbed an apple from my kitchen. I walk outside in one of Ashton's huge hoodies until my feet meet the sand. People were starting to show up with cans of beer, wood, and of course their lies. I put on my game face, the face that exceeds confidence, the face that hides pain and shame well. Even Nicky was here, I smiled bitterly at her, showing her that whatever she thought was going to happen between her and Ashton never phased me and never will. Ashton and I have something most people in this world will never really know and that's all the romance of a poem with all the passion and excitement of a thriller novel. The possibility of her having the same thing was ripped away from her but that gives her no right. To think she seemed so sweet, those are the worst people. The ones that smile in your face just to carve you out behind your back.

- - -

An hour or two had now passed and people had enough beer in their system to forget their morals. Ashton had told Jax about his little game plan and Jax agreed to play along. The fire was big enough to warm everyone from a reasonable distance, so Ashton whistled loudly, his big persona radiating from him, I admired it. Everyone flocked to him, like moths to a flame.

We gathered around the fire, I took a seat on Ashton's lap and wrapped my arms around his neck, in a way I wanted to show Nicky specifically that he wasn't going anywhere, and neither was I. I peeped Sophie looking at Jax and Jax looking at the flame in front of us. Remembering what he had said about wanting his intentions to be pure, but they weren't. Ballsy of him to admit that to me, honest of him too.

"Let's all play a little game." Ashton started to say. "Cause well, I know how much everyone loves games here right?" He grins and raises his beer. I spot Cody looking as if he was in his usual element.

I hear a few shouts agreeing with Ashton and a couple of people raising their beer bottles and beer cans. I also hear the occasional comment-"Is that her from the picture?" But I ignore those.

"Let's play 'two truths and a lie," Ashton says.

"We'll go in a circle, one by one. The rule is for example, I'll tell Evelyn two truths and one lie about myself or something that has to do with me and she has to guess which are the two truths and which one is the lie. Got it?" He says. Everyone nods, everyone's ready.
